A Christening Gift idea for the baby who has everything??

DH is going to be Godfather.

Baby boy is an only child and the parents are fairly well off.
DH has ruled out buying baby a Bible. I suspect silver picture frames and money boxes are over done.
We don't know the other godparents to ask what they are getting. Do all the other guests bring gifts too? It's our first ever Christening!
What on Earth can we buy? And what's a good budget?
I'm assuming dress code is similar to a wedding but maybe toned down a little ?

I named a star for my nephew when he was christened, only cost £20 and I know you're not really naming a specific star but he’s nine now and he loves that he has a star ⭐️

Redwinestillfine · 05/10/2019 18:19

Books? Maybe something he can grow into or we got a picture with name and date of christening on....not on the high st has nice stuff

ChelseaCat · 05/10/2019 18:21

What about a case of port to be given to him when he turns 18/21? Or some premium bonds?

A nice copy of a classic children's book like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland or Wind in the Willows?

Onekidnoclue · 05/10/2019 18:24

I second the book idea. If there something personal (eg baby is called Alice get lovely Alice in wonderland) I’d get that. If not Winnie the Pooh or other classic.
Btw yes, clothes wise it’s casual wedding. Think tea with the vicar. Enjoy

Butterymuffin · 05/10/2019 18:27

Classic kids' books. Premium bonds for the novelty! Board games for later. Think slightly ahead.

RunsForGummyBears · 05/10/2019 18:29

Monogram cufflinks?

A blanket with DDs name sewn into it and a lovely hardback book of children’s stories were lovely at my DDs christening and a bit different to the frames and money box ideas

Camomila · 05/10/2019 18:36

Both your favourite childhood books with a little note to say why you liked them

Toy Noahs ark?

nicknamehelp · 05/10/2019 18:43

My dc were given premium bonds and both had small wins so its a gift that keeps on giving. Also got a set of Winnie the pooh books they loved. Ds got an engraved beer tankered.

NC2605 · 05/10/2019 18:52

Some of our favourite christening gifts were a puzzle of DCs name and a train of other DCs name that could be put together. We also got given a little wooden childrens chair which was nice as DD got older. We definitely got too many money boxes, lovely as they were. We also got quite a lot of books..nothing duplicate, some for now and some for keepsake/older.. all great but possibly others will get similar.

MunchMunch · 05/10/2019 18:58

Rosary beads?

I'm not religious and to be honest the people/family who's christenings I've been to aren't religious either but for some reason feel the need to get their kids christened. I think sometimes it's just the presents/money they want but everyone far too polite to say it outright so I make sure I buy religious gifts. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheBrockmans · 05/10/2019 19:01

Nativity set, book of prayers for children.

toddlertantrumhell · 05/10/2019 19:21

Book of Aesop's fables

Icypop · 05/10/2019 19:25

My DS got a wooden shape sorter Noahs Ark for his christening which was one of his best presents. Its religious too so fits the occasion but not overly so!

peony2325 · 05/10/2019 19:46

Icypop reminded me I got this for my Godson...great quality and you can buy extra animals as presents in the next couple of years.

I got my goddaughter a set of bible stories but as picture books so they were more child-friendly. Relevant for a Christening but we're just like normal story books so not in-your-face religious.

Think I got them from The Book People.

If you've got a huge budget then Lanka Kade does a beautiful Noah's Ark but it is expensive.

Maybe a 'posh' teddy bear?

Yerbumsootthewindae · 05/10/2019 20:09

Books are a great idea - in the past I've put together a box of books covering baby to teen (waterstones etc have lists of most popular books from each stage if you're not sure), or bought the complete Harry Potter set.

Seeingadistance · 05/10/2019 20:16

My son was given a hip flask as a christening gift - not to be used till he was 18 years old, which is next month!

MakeLemonade · 05/10/2019 20:18

We got one of these from someone and our DD - now 3 - absolutely loves her Peter Rabbit book.

For both of our grandsons we got small wooden stools which had their name and date of baptism.
Now, they like to sit on them and also to stand on to help with cooking etc

BertieBotts · 05/10/2019 20:21

Agree books. If not bible stories for children, traditional fairy tales or something. A nice heavy thick volume with lovely illustrations they can keep for a long time.

Or if you're not bothered about it being kept for years, wooden Noah's ark toy? There are some lovely ones!

allabouteve1 · 05/10/2019 20:22

A book that your DH loved as a child with a personal message in the front of what he wishes for the baby as they grow.

MissSueFlay · 05/10/2019 20:26

We got our god children a lovely complete Chronicles of Narnia book. It has echoes of the Bible but your DH might not object to it!

I'm a regular church goer and I find it a bit odd when christening parties come in dressed up like it's a wedding - most of the congregation are likely to be wearing jeans!

BlueLadybird · 05/10/2019 20:34

There’s a lovely Shirley Hughes Collection book which I’ve given as a gift in the past.
