Chips beans & cheese

What goes on first, beans or cheese?

The peas or the gravy?

I remember years ago when I worked in a chip shop I tried to put gravy in the bottom of the tray before I put the chips in, then more gravy on top, as I hated getting to the bottom of the gravy chip and running out of gravy....but my boss stopped me!!

We're having a chippy tonight and I fancy chips beans & cheese but I'm wondering if beans or cheese on the chips first.....

Ps: we may have been in the pub an hour and had a spritzer or two so excuse any spelling mistakes... Wink

Beans only go with a full English, or Scottish in my case if they are served in a separate ramekin to make sure they never touch the egg.

Bloodybridget · 05/10/2019 17:16

Ooh, I never get chips with gravy now (live in London and have never seen this on the menu at a fish and chip place) but when I was a child my DM made chips several times a week, and sometimes she used to buy a frozen thing, possibly made by Findus, that was slices of braised beef in gravy, that was delicious with chips! Sorry OT I know!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 05/10/2019 17:21

Chips and gravy = food of the gods!

allabouteve1 · 05/10/2019 17:24

Chips, salt and vinegar, cheese, beans followed by more cheese for ultimate cheesy goodness.

pazwaz70 · 05/10/2019 17:28

OMG, I love chips & gravy but I'm from the North East.
I would have cheese on the chips then beans & then more cheese on top of the beans.

Sleepyblueocean · 05/10/2019 17:30

Chips then gravy then cheese.

redchocolatebutton · 05/10/2019 17:31

beans and cheese on the side.
soggy chips are a waste of frying fat

SpaceCadet4000 · 05/10/2019 17:41

Chips, beans, cheese. I used to get this from the work canteen in an old job of mine once and month and it was heaven. I used to add tabasco on the very top. I got to 23 years old before ever having heard of it, but it's great comfort food.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/10/2019 17:51

I've never seen cheese in a chip shop and I've been to chip shops all over northern England, north Wales, the Midlands and Scotland because fish and chips or a variation thereof, are my go to work lunch when I'm out and about and I'm currently studying the many regional variations. I may even do a PhD on the subject.

I've discovered that in the West Midlands they will want to know whether you want your chips battered or not Confused but they won't allow you to call a chip butty a chip butty.

Many regions do cod, which is not as nice as haddock.

Anywhere that doesn't use beef dripping is automatically inferior to beef dripping places.

Round here, the preference for sides in order of frequency of observation is mushy peas, curry, gravy, beans, but I'd usually have curry sauce, but not when out, as obviously could be messy to eat.

To answer the OPs question, it would be chips and curry or peas in a separate pot, with the peas or curry poured onto the chips on a plate at home.

Newschapter · 05/10/2019 17:54

We've went to another pub so will get chippy on way home....

It's years from I had a chips, beans a cheese but so looking forward to it!!

So, chips, cheese then beans??

Huddersfield. Cheesy chips and gravy abound in Huddersfield.

catwithnohat · 05/10/2019 18:01

Chips and curry sauce actuallySmile

MovinOnUp · 05/10/2019 18:11

Base of chips
liberal application of salt
layer of cheese
beans
another layer of cheese

titnomatani · 05/10/2019 18:14

Cheese then beans. The hot beans will melt the cheese underneath. Gravy doesn't belong on chips so I definitely think that's the alcohol talking!

I want chippy chips now...

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 05/10/2019 18:18

I've discovered that in the West Midlands they will want to know whether you want your chips battered or not but they won't allow you to call a chip butty a chip butty.

Which bit? I've lived in three parts (Birmingham, Solihull and Warwickshire) and never been asked if I want chips battered Confused and it's always called a chip butty!
I'm curious about whether it's a random chip shop going rogue or if we're really split in this region too!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 05/10/2019 18:19

Gravy on chips is delicious. As is curry sauce. Mmm.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/10/2019 18:22

It was near Dudley Anchor.

TheJoxter · 05/10/2019 18:30

Cheese, chips, more cheese, beans, even more cheese

Bodicea · 05/10/2019 18:32

Cheese on top as I don’t like it to get too melted. Loses its flavour and also seems less substantial when melted somehow.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/10/2019 18:34

I'm riddled with jealousy that you have a chippy that does chips and gravy. I feel deprived.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/10/2019 18:36

I'm in East Midlands and chips and gravy is standard, as is chips and cheese.

Our chippy does the gravy in pots if you want so you can dunk them.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/10/2019 18:37

Oh and it's chip cobs in these parts, we don't call them chip butties.

AMAM8916 · 05/10/2019 18:39

Never heard of or tried chips, cheese and beans but chips cheese and gravy is the best!

I would do it chips, cheese, gravy then more cheese on top 🙂
