Really useful SMALL kitchen gadgets?

100 replies

FurrySlipperBoots · 05/10/2019 14:34

Help me out would you Mumsnet? I'm wanting stocking filler suggestions of little kitchen gadgets. What can't you do without when you're cooking? Looking for ideas for both 'essentials' and quirky novelty things that are fun but will actually get used.

whereyouleft interestingly I use the blue one pretty much every day but the pink one maybe twice in 10 years. Hmm need to find uses for it or it will be recycled I think.

Anything from the 'OXO' range is really good quality.
Definitely recommend the peeler or the hand held lemon zester

Jar key, mini spatula have already been mentioned. I also love my mini silicone whisk, great for eggs in a small bowl or cup. And I have a small silicone square, like a woven cloth, about 4 inches square, which is brilliant for opening tops of milk and juice cartons when they're being difficult.

Lemon zester (not grater). Mini tongs for getting stuff out of jars. Slim measuring spoons that fit in spice jars. Long handled teaspoon for tall mayonnaise jars. Decent ice cream scoop. Funnel. Runner bean slicer.

Oooh, can you like the spiraliser please @yaduronronron? I'm after one, but don't want anything bulky.

Sounds daft I know but magnetic toast tongs from Lakeland - £2.79.
I bought them on the off chance after seeing them on display whilst waiting in the queue and OH thought I’d lost the plot when i told him what they were for.
He soon changed his mind when he used them to get a crumpet that had got stuck out of the toaster and they’ve been used on lots of occasions since. So much so that I’ve given a pair to everyone in the family that has a toaster and whilst I don’t deny that I’ve had some puzzled looks when they’ve first seen them they’ve all since said how useful they find them when things need a helping hand out of the toaster..

HeronLanyon I use the blue for getting to the bottom of jars, but find the pink better for jobs like getting every last scrap of cake mix out of the bowl, or running over a roasting pan to remove as much oil/gunk as possible before washing it.

These threads always cost me a small fortune, but I’m not doing too bad so far today.

I’ve only ordered the recommendations of

@mateysmum anysharp knife sharpener
@DotBall garlic peeler (I’ve looked at them before & wondered if they weren’t any good)

Still undecided about which of the many garlic chopper/crushers.

Mine is one of these cheese slicers, mines a different brand, but same idea..CHEESE

Probably won’t fit in a stocking but a splatter guard. So much less wiping down needed.

I brought a mini spiraliser for £2 in Tesco last week and it’s changed my life Grin every fruit/veg that can be spiralled has been spiralled this week.
We also have a handheld milk frother and a motorised fork that swirls spaghetti (that’s never come out the box so can’t comment on it’s usefulness)

As Redred said, a microplane grater or zester is worth every penny. Mine have lasted over 18 years and they are still used every day

Personally I love Joseph Joseph stuff, I have loads of it. Stylish and practical really well designed. Usually pick up bits for half the price in TK Max

@GemmeFatale

What's a splatter guard? Do you have a link?
