Strictly - why does the BBC assume that everyone is obsessed?

it’s ridiculous. 45 minutes every single night during the week, the endless Saturday night show, the results on Sunday.

i’d quite like it to piss off, but it’s only just begun. i am surely not alone in my curmudgeonly view on this?

I love it, but even then only watch Saturday and Sunday, and it's v easy to avoid given how many other channels there are.

EntirelyAnonymised · 03/10/2019 13:03

It has become one of their flagship shows and gets good viewer figures. Lots of people are avid fans.

I haven’t watched it since the series with Mark Ramprakash.

thecatneuterer · 03/10/2019 13:14

Because it's popular. There are plenty of other channels if you're not interested. The Olympics was much worse, but I guess that's popular too and I just watched other channels.

But the Olympics is for two weeks every four years. Strictly is every night for 3 months of the year 😩

Asta19 · 03/10/2019 13:55

I have never watched Strictly, doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. Never seen bake off either. I only really watch Netflix now anyway so it's not an issue for me.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 03/10/2019 13:59

I’ve never watched strictly and have no interest in it, I haven’t really noticed when it’s on tbh. I seem to spend way too much time on MN.

I used to enjoy it at first, but as time has gone on the howling and baying of the audience has really annoyed me. And the standing ovations - so many times! Just gave up on it

Goldenstarz · 03/10/2019 14:10

I agree it's everywhere I don't watch it and never will watch it

BarbaraofSeville · 03/10/2019 14:31

I'm annoyed because it's barged into the slot previously occupied by Pointless, hence ruining my 'get home from work and sit down with a cup of tea and the cats' routine.

Quaffy · 03/10/2019 14:34

barbaraofseville

Exactly! I would say put as much strictly on as they want but don’t mess with Pointless!

AutumnCrow · 03/10/2019 14:34

Yeah, not happy they've brought Pointless forward 😡

TheMustressMhor · 03/10/2019 14:37

Same here - even down to the cats.

I think the BBC knows how popular SCD is and realises that they will get many, many viewers if they show a Strictly extravaganza every night of the week.

There's no need for anyone to watch it on Sunday though. Just check with one of the Spoilers on Saturday and you'll know who's been eliminated.

AutumnCrow · 03/10/2019 14:37

I turned into watch Richard Osman and Xander do the Pointless final yesterday, and found myself instead confronted by a kind of crash test dummy version of David James in sequins

AdultFishcakes · 03/10/2019 14:38

The moving of Pointless has boiled my piss to an unprecedented level

Quaffy · 03/10/2019 14:41

I have never complained to the BBC before but might actually complain about them moving pointless.

Sparklingbrook · 03/10/2019 14:41

I quite like Strictly. Prefer it to the tedious X Factor/BGT etc. I don't like Pointless at all.

QuimJongUn · 03/10/2019 14:41

It's utter shite, but then, so is most TV. Thank goodness for Netflix etc.

AdultFishcakes · 03/10/2019 14:45

I respectfully disagree Quim

There’s a fair bit of good telly atm on the BBC (albeit on iplayer)

  • State of the Union
  • Defending the Guilty
  • Motherland

to name a few

And even though it holds no interest to me, Strictly is “good” as it’s a Saturday night crowd pleaser but I totally agree with the OP the midweek gubbins can fuck off.

user1573354 · 03/10/2019 14:46

They don't assume, it is based on ratings. I suppose that's what happens when they insist on the TV License price instead of making the BBC available for a subscription. Most young people don't bother with a TV License and stream everything. Banning Iplayer for non TV License holders has lost them the vast majority of younger viewers. I haven't had a TV License for 12 years.

stucknoue · 03/10/2019 14:54

Because some people love it, the viewing figures are good, even if you only have freeview you will have 25+ channels, plus TVs have an off button!

Grimbles · 03/10/2019 14:56

What I do find irritating is that these days you dont just have "the show".

You have "the show", "the show discussing what just happened on the show", "the daily version of the show discussing what might happen on the show", "the show being discussed on every other show", "behind the scenes of the show" and so on.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/10/2019 15:23

Add me to the growing list of people who are pissed off about Pointless being moved. It has messed with our routine here - the dogs know that the final round of Pointless means it is Nearly Teatime. Our Labrador, who is especially food motivated (aka greedy) can hear the last round start, from her bed, and appears round the front room door looking hopeful.

I quite like Strictly - but only the Saturday show and the results on Sunday - I feel absolutely no need whatsoever to watch 45 minutes about the show every week day!

I think I heard that the It Takes Two show is only on BBC1 for the first two weeks, so we will hopefully be back to normal next Monday.

Lllot5 · 03/10/2019 15:28

I like strictly but you’re right it does go on a bit. Every night used to be on bbc2 now bbc1. But they wouldn’t show it if people didn’t watch. Every Saturday right up to Christmas now. Too much of a good thing?

BarbaraofSeville · 03/10/2019 15:28

Although, it has occurred to me during the course of this thread that I could just watch it on iplayer at the original time, or indeed, whenever the hell I like Blush.

SDTG You do well to make the dogs last until 6 pm. The cats insist on provision of their food being the first task that is completed on entering the house. No-one would be sitting down to watch TV programmes if their bowls were empty.
