What would you pick? Chilled food fine. Only a kettle so no means of heating stuff. No allergies

We did this last weekend and had: hummus, guacamole, carrot sticks, olives, falafel, crisps and a fancy loaf of sourdough.

And then chocolate and jam doughnuts... Grin

Grimbles · 03/10/2019 08:03

jessicama · 03/10/2019 10:08

When I basically lived in hotels (because of work) and wanted a night in (get tired of restaurants really quickly) I'd usually do some combination of...

Avocado/cheese/hummus (I'm veggie)
Salad bowl
Nice crusty bread (or the pre-cooked lentil packets)
Olives
Popcorn
Fruit and yoghurt
Chocolate

Always would always ask the hotel bar for some fresh milk for my tea (tastes so much better than the UHT sachets!)

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 03/10/2019 11:50

Im liking the ideas very much. Room service and delivery too expensive. Looking for a nice treaty start to the holiday withput overdoing anything, holiday is already a bit spendy

I love an picnic in hotel rooms and we even take sporks with us so we don't have to eat everything with a teaspoon.

Bread & hummus or soft chese
Olives
M&S salads ( i love their chicken & rice noodle one)
DD always has a veggie samosa
DS always has sushi
Fruit salad
Chocolate min roll tubs

If you want to have something cooked there's always Naked Noodle tubs?

MiniDoofa · 03/10/2019 13:29

Sainsburys salt and vinegar twirls.
Not very fancy but I LOVE them and can’t get them. 😂

A few years ago, after splitting with my husband, I went on my own to Rome. One evening I decided to do this. I found a little deli type shop and bought bread, cheese, olives - anything and everything I fancied. I also wanted some wine, but didn't have a corkscrew (pre-screwcap days). The shopkeeper opened the wine for me and gave me a stopper so I could carry it back to the hotel. I still have that stopper and it brings back many happy memories every time I use it.

bruffin · 03/10/2019 13:38

Dd and i had a picnic like this last year when she attended uni interview. We went to M&s by the hotel and just bought bits and pieces we fancied at the time.
It was evening so we got a few reduced items as well.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/10/2019 13:44

Don't forget it's compulsory to all sit on the same bed to eat it. Otherwise it's not a "proper" hotel picnic Grin

pumkinspicetime · 03/10/2019 14:18

DC love these and often ask for one on holiday. DH thinks we are a bit nuts but has got used to it.
Make sure you have napkins of some sort and a knife for spreading is often very useful. Try and pick some up if you need to while out at a sandwich counter or similar.
Crusty bread, olives, crisps, cheese, Parma ham, apples or grapes. Brownies for desert. Wine and fruit shoots.
Enjoy

I have done this once or twice when travelling for work, especially if I have had an early flight, followed by a day of meetings and I am on my own. I don't mind eating out alone but sometimes it's just bliss to get to the room, have a shower / bath, and lie in the bed in underwear / PJ's with the TV on and a selection of lovely things to eat and there HAS to be wine!

I don't live in the UK and when I visit for work like that I love the novelty of somewhere like Greggs which we don't have at home. I get sausage rolls (a favourite!), cream doughnuts, crisps, chocolate and wine. Never healthy!

It is bliss!

caperplips · 03/10/2019 15:53

I forgot that once or twice on city breaks with dh and dd we have booked room only in the hotel - some days we have the hotel buffet breakfast but if it is no good or we get tired of it, dh will go out and get us coffee / juice and pastries and we eat them in bed! We love this too!

Apolloanddaphne · 03/10/2019 15:57

I love a bed picnic when on holiday! I even take a big cotton scarf with me to spread on the bed so we don't make the covers messy.

I love cheese, cold meats, salad, crackers, crisps/dip, fruit platter and loads of wine.

bert3400 · 03/10/2019 16:00

You definitely need cheese twists and wine

ClaudiaSchiffersUglySister · 03/10/2019 17:13

Aaah I’m loving this thread!

Houmous, crudités, olives.
Cold meats.
Hard boiled eggs.
Posh crisps/popcorn/poppadoms.
Peanut butter and crackers.
Apple, banana.
Posh smoothie.
Herbal teas.
Co-yo yoghurty thing.
Very dark chocolate.
Orgasmic red wine.

All (except the drinks!) laid out on a sarong on the bed.

iklboo · 03/10/2019 17:25

Cheese, pate & crackers
Crusty bread
Nice meats
Posh crisps
Pickled onions
Quiche
Red wine
Canned G & T

ExpletiveDelighted · 03/10/2019 17:39

Don't you all get a bed full of crumbs?

pumkinspicetime · 03/10/2019 17:46

We sit on the floor to avoid crumbs and mess.

Lagatha · 03/10/2019 17:51

I went to Paris last year with DH. He had to work for a few hours on one of the days we were there (was fine, his company paid for his train fare and one night of the hotel bill).
I don't live in the UK anymore but I was wandering around on my own and stumbled on an M&S food hall. I was so happy! Got a ham, cheese and pickle sandwich, hula hoops and a fresh cream slice. Also bought loads of digestives, tea bags and salt and vinegar crisps to take home.

Grumpbum123 · 03/10/2019 17:53

M&S blue cheese and pecan salad
Bottle of wine
Something with chocolate on

CakeNinja · 03/10/2019 17:55

I have never had a hotel picnic!
I’m torn between thinking it’s a nice idea and thinking it sounds like a faff to go shopping for it all and that I’d rather just go out for dinner! To be honest, by the time you’ve bought wine and packets of everything (that’s too much for the amount you’re going to eat - and what do you do with the leftovers?!) you could probably have got a cheap dinner out for the same price if not less!!
Anyway, regardless, enjoy your hotel picnic 🧺

boringisasboringdoes · 03/10/2019 18:32

Du pain du vin du Boursin

But seriously crumbs in the bed!!

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 03/10/2019 18:38

Loving this. Borrowing ideas here and there. Theres only DC and me and an early start in the morning so if i go no alcoholic I should be able to get a fair amount of nibbles for tenner. Hadnt thought about dessert. I might even make chocolate chip muffins and cheese straws.... Although having been eating sensibly for the couple of months beforehand bread would be a real treat
