Just that basically
He’s a lovely lad. Quiet and thoughtful.
Wondered what he could expect at interview.
We live in a town where part time jobs are scarce so he really needs to shine.
I’m a bit worried that he won’t.
Thank you

Just be himself! But a slightly more professional version of himself. Mac Donald's are good at employing the younger generation.
It would be good if he did a bit of research on the company, so they will know he is keen. Also to be flexible with working hours. Tell the employers he would work weekends etc (if he intends on doing)

AndromedaPerseus · 01/10/2019 16:23

Reliability and honesty are key qualities can he give examples where he displayed both of these?

Atalune · 01/10/2019 16:25

Read their corporate website blurb. Think what his fave food is there.

I worked for mCdonalds when I was 16-21 and LOVED it.

They expect-
Really friendly and chatty. Be polite and chatty.
Hard work and I mean hard. They have very very high cleanliness standards so that’s maybe a good thing for him to impart on them. That’s he very clean and not afraid of a graft.
Everything is run on a timer so attention to detail is important.
Basically maths and arithmetic is useful too.

Yes weekends are best..to allow time for college studies (A levels)

He’s a bit worried about how to deal with a dissatisfied customer

I said if he gets asked that at interview...is to say, I’d check with company policy , make sure the customer is heard, and feels valued and then to say that he will have a word with his supervisor/ manager

I think he’s worried that if he gets a job he’d be chucked in the deep end without training.
He reckons this happened to his pal
Surely not.
McDs are a global company. Surely they’d give proper training to ensure all crew sing from the same songsheet.
🤞

It might sound obvious but dress smartly, turn up on time, smile & give the interviewer plenty of eye contact. Show enthusiasm for the company & show them you would really like the job. Also, thank everyone after the interview. I know it sounds like common sense but it can often be missing. Good luck to your grandson!

RedWineAllMine · 01/10/2019 16:28

Forgot to mention customer service skills, and working under pressure. They may ask for examples. As it's very in your face customer based and most of the time they are really busy aren't they?

RedWineAllMine · 01/10/2019 16:30

Bless! I hope he gets the job. I wish him luck. Please update Smile

ivfbabymomma1 · 01/10/2019 16:32

Tell him not to worry too much! McDonald's was my first job when I was 16 & I was super shy!

Dowser · 01/10/2019 16:32

Maths is good.he got A*
He was such a chatty 10 year old..what happened ?
We will work on that 👍
This could be worth £150 a month to him.
A lot for him 🤞

I worked there over a decade ago so the interviews have probably changed somewhat since then with the amount of competition about but I'm sure one thing that hasn't changed much is the shifts! The main thing they were interested in was flexibility, could I do evenings / weekends? Could I cover with short notice?

Most other questions were things like "What would you do if there's a wait for the order" - answer: You give them their drinks and tell them to take a seat then take it over to them. "What do you do if there's no-one to be served?" - answer: Get cleaning round the till area

It's all common sense stuff, if he's thoughtful as you say he should ace it. Even if he doesn't know the answer, he should just think about what would be best for the customer.

The most important thing you can do is tell him that succeed or fail, it's no reflection on him. In a market this competitive, you could be second best out of a thousand applicants and feel like you have failed.

Wishing him all the luck in the world Flowers

Ounce · 01/10/2019 16:34

Ah, bless him. Hope it goes well.

Hecateh · 01/10/2019 16:36

Enthusiasm and a smile will get him a long way.

Another point for him to remember on the dissatisfied customer scenario is to remember It's rarely, if ever, personal - and even if it is on any occasion not to treat it as so. Some people are rude and entitled, others are stressed or impatient because of other things going on in their life. It is important not to take criticism personally whilst still acting on it if it justified in any way,

In AMA there is a thread from a McD's manager - may be worth having a look at that and/or DM'ing the OP?

Dowser · 01/10/2019 16:39

Some excellent tips
Thank you

RedWineAllMine · 01/10/2019 22:21

That's correct! I've watched it on Amazon. It's a good film. He might not need to know it bless him, but it's good to be prepared.

Dowser · 01/10/2019 22:29

Ah, we have amazon prime...I’ll try to see if we get chance to watch it before his interview

DS worked at McDs a couple of years ago. He was asked about what hours he could work, would he be willing to cover others etc but it was a lot about how he would cope with difficult customers. It was all about being calm, trying to resolve their issue and passing to manager if required. Remaining polite at all times etc.

Good luck to him, DS found it very flexible but they worked them very hard and he was often left on his own at the till with long queues so it was stressful. He found better paid work in a coffee shop so left after 5 months.

Itsjustmee · 01/10/2019 22:46

My son worked for MD when he was the same age. He got the job straight away and worked there all through 6th form and Uni
He has dyslexia and dyspraxia but they were great with him.
Things he did which seems obvious but not to everyone at the interview
Turn up a few mins early
Shook hands with the interviewer
Clean hands and nails
Short clean hair
Clean shirt and clothes
Polished shoes

Thanked the person who interviewed them
Sounds stupid and common sense but working in a FF environment you want people who are presentable

Dowser · 09/10/2019 10:22

And the good news is ...
He got the job 🎉✔️🤚🏽
So proud
His interview was at 9 and they let him know at 1
They got someone to buddy up with him and let him have a go at the drive through
He was asked if he had a question for them and he said he wanted to go to Durham university would he be able to transfer to a McDonald’s there
Apparently Durham doesn’t have a McDonald’s
Shocked at that.

So thank you everyone.
Again mumsnet at its finest

Massive Congratulations!!!! Really pleased for you and him Smile

Dowser · 09/10/2019 13:00

Thank. You
I know I’m biased but they are getting a really lovely young man
Now if his dad gets the job he’s interviewing for shortly, that will be the icing on the cake and nana can retire from worrying about them all for a little while 🤞
