Printer recommendation for kids homework, cheap and reliable

I'm not sure it even needs to be colour ... do kids (years 7&9) ever get homework which requires colour?
We both have access to colour printers where we work.
I don't want a monthly subscription cos' it will literally be a handful of pages every month.
I'd also prefer to be able to use cheap compatible toner cartridges etc.
It won't be required for printing photos or anything fancy.
Thanks

I have the HP3632 and it was very cheap and does a perfect job. You don't even need to be attached to print, so very handy. Does scan and copies as well.

As it is an HP, very easy to find compatible cartridges (type 63) .
I bought if for 30 Australian dollars, cut that in half roughly for pounds.

LiliesAndChocolate · 30/09/2019 20:18

... And to answer your second question. Yes , some homework will require colour printing. Not every month, but that odd project on something, or a powerpoint.

HarrietSchulenberg · 30/09/2019 21:42

I've just bought a Canon Pixma (www.argos.co.uk/product/9341021) to replace my old Epson one that kept getting blocked print nozzles. Seems great so far. We've tried it for homework, photos and scanning and seems great so far. Unsure of what it'll be like on ink yet.

Lifebi · 01/10/2019 11:44

Any other suggestions?
From other threads there seems to be the suggestion that laser printers are more reliable than inkjet printers if you're only using it occasionally ... as the inkjets dry up and get clogged.

I'd get the cheapest greyscale laser printer around for occasional printing.

I'd go for this one as it does double sided Brother HL-L2370DW and is £100

Lifebi · 01/10/2019 12:22

yes, I'm beginning to think a mono printer might be the safest choice and Brother seem to get good reviews.

I've got a Samsung laser printer and am very happy with it and when I had to replace the cartridge it was about a tenner or so from Amazon, but if you don't print very much, the cartridge it comes with will probably last a couple of years or so.

Something like this. I'd currently got a similar wifi version but could never get the wifi to work, so just use a cable.

homemadecommunistrussia · 01/10/2019 13:38

I really wouldnt bother. Home printers all seem to be unreliable wasteful and expensive. The cartridges for mine are thirty odd quid and dry up before they run out. The wireless only works occasionally.Hmm
Schools expect less and less homework to be printed as time goes on. Things that do need to be printed can usually be done at school or try your local library.

Lifebi · 01/10/2019 14:43

Yes, in most cases it can be printed at school or work ... but there's the odd occasion when it's required and not having it can result in a detention and an upset child.

With HP Instant ink the cartridges are sent to you by mail before you run out. Monthly plans start from £2 for 40 pages.
I have two (student DS and home) HP Envy Printers which are on home WiFi, they also scan, photocopy front and back, have an email address and I use an iPad app to print mails, scans and photos.

Sgtmajormummy · 01/10/2019 15:04

Amazon HP Envy printer
Having a delivery of cartridges really takes the stress away!

I have a Brother laser printer. I got fed up of my inks drying out. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever bought. Prints double sided. It’s wifi. Very easy to set up. I’ve had it about six months now and I’m still on the toner it came with. I’d thoroughly recommend it.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/10/2019 15:49

I stopped using inkjets after I'd got into a row with Epsom because 90% of what I printed was black and white, but every time I switched the printer on it wasted a little of all the colour ink cleaning the jets, so the colour cartridges ran out even though I'd hardly used them and the bastard printer wouldn't print in black and white because there was no coloured ink in the printer, even though there was black ink and it only used black ink to print black text.

I complained to Epsom and got a rather patronising reply about it being a colour printer and hence needed coloured ink to work.

Lifebi · 01/10/2019 18:41

Moooo, can you tell me what model of Brother printer you have?

OP posts:
OrchidInTheSun · 01/10/2019 18:53

I have a colour Brother laser printer. Although it was more expensive than an inkjet, the fact that it prints beautifully no matter how often you use it and the cartridge lasts ages.

I'd never go back to inkjet

Lifebi · 01/10/2019 19:41

Orchid, do you have the model?

OP posts:
OrchidInTheSun · 01/10/2019 20:06

It's a BCP-L3550CDW. Think it was about £200ish. But it's colour - sure you could get a B&W one cheaper.

Lifebi · 01/10/2019 23:22

Yes, I don't really want to spend more than a hundred.

I got an HP one for £25, including delivery, from their website. It comes with a black and colour cartridge. They also offer a free monthly ink subscription, for 15 pages or less, a month.

Here's what I mean!

It's fab, and the wireless works really well.

Lifebi · 01/10/2019 23:36

Thanks Dieu, which model is it?

OP posts:
Dieu · 01/10/2019 23:38

HP DeskJet 2622.

Lifebi · 01/10/2019 23:49

The 2622 is £34.99 , the 2630 is £29.
It does seem like a good deal.
Just curious how long you've had it and how many pages per month you've used?
Just that I've read that you need to use inkjets regularly to stop them clogging.

OP posts:
Lifebi · 01/10/2019 23:55

Actually it's £25 in Curry's but I don't think the same printing plan is available.
