DBS check

Hello,

Can anybody who has had a DBS check prior to starting their job tell me how long it took please?

DP has been waiting about 3 weeks and it has been at stage 4 for a week.

Mine came through within a few days. Maybe its taking longer as its the start of term time, college and uni apolicants might be getting theirs done as part of enrolement.

I carry out DBS checks at work and it varies. Sometimes it can take 6 weeks, sometimes 6 days.

I have them regularly for a volunteer role indo, have known it take 3 days or 3 months. But the average is 6-8 weeks

OP how do you know what stage you are at?
I'm waiting for one also, it's enhanced, I don't know if that makes a difference?

@EvenPhilip the new employer sent DP a link by email so he could check the progress as well as them I think.

The ones I apply for for people working for me take only a day or two. The only delays are when the Metropolitan police area is involved, they have long backlogs

Daughter applying for lifeguard job at uni. 2 weeks and not year on-line to be reached. Held up at South Gloucester but assured will be online soon. Nonsense - she may as well get a job in a shop. Shortage of lifeguards and support staff in school, not surprised if people have to wait so long to start. DBS in our hometown took 8 days to gone through.

The Metropolitan police have been much faster in the last year or so in my experience. I used to process the for others for work and the only ones taking longer were people who had changed name or moved house recently. My own was through in a few days, but I had one already for another role, which seems to help. All enhanced ones by the way.

Fwiw, schools can start staff before the dbs is back, provided all the other checks are complete and a suitable risk assessment is in place

I just had an enhanced check done and it took six days from doing the online application to receiving the certificate.

It's not for a school job it's for a care home. We have recently just moved within the last two months so could this be the hold up? I'm just worrying that it's taking so long and although he has signed paperwork to say he has accepted the job etc that they may say it's taken too long. They want an ASAP start.

I'm into week 3 of waiting for my second DBS. It's also for care work, my last (for a care agency back in June this year) took just over 3 weeks from submission too certificate arriving.

They vary massively.
At the moment all students starting on teaching/social work courses will have just entered the system. All teachers, TAs, lunchtime supervisors etc who have started at new schools. I would imagine they have a bit of a backlog.

I have just had mine renewed in my current job as our company check every 3 yrs. Mine was started on 6th aug and it sat at stage 4 for approx 6 weeks, i just got mine back on saturday, so could be up to 7 weeks depending on busy your local police force are and how many are before your husband.

Surely they could just have everyone enrol on the update service and this wouldnt be necessary?

OP, I've just had one come through. It took 10 days from start to finish.

I run DBS checks for a care home and they can take anywhere between a few days to a couple of months. You can’t chase the DBS until the application has been at stage 4 for 60 days or more. It’s frustrating for everyone.
If the company offer ‘adult first’ checks then this could be a quick short term solution.

I just checked.

It was actually 13 days. It was at stage 4 for 10 days.

Just waiting for certificate to arrive now!

I will mention the adult first checks, is that similar to a DBS? Don't want to be paying for two things though. Especially since we don't know how long the DBS will take.

@proudestofmums I wonder why his is taking so long. We have recently moved, but hearing people's come back so quickly surly his should of as well. It's been at stage 4 almost a week. He can leave his current job as soon as the new job are happy with his DBS but it just seems to be taking a really long time. I'm praying it's done by the end of this week but won't hold my breath lol.

Under the old CRB system I was once in the position of starting 2 part time jobs the same week.

I had to fill in a form for each, one came back in a week,one took 3 months and they actually phoned to appologise for the delay.

Stage 4 is when the check is passed on to the police for external checks. This can involve contacting numerous constabularies and they all deal with them in the order they receive them. So if one is particularly busy this can hold things up.

When an application has been at stage 4 for more than 60 days then the dbs can escalate things and raise a query with the police. Until then it’s just a waiting game.

I just got a basic one back which took 8 days.
I had an advanced one in January that took about 6 weeks.
