Hello,

Can anybody who has had a DBS check prior to starting their job tell me how long it took please?

DP has been waiting about 3 weeks and it has been at stage 4 for a week.

OP get your dh to joint the update system ASAP

Just out of curiosity, given that they check the PNC at an earlier stage, what exactly is the info provided at stage 4? What info would local stations have that isn't on the PNC?

TravellingSpoon · 02/10/2019 11:07

I had one done in Feb and it took around 3 weeks. Joined the update service as soon as it arrived.

Girasole02 · 02/10/2019 11:20

Mine took 2 weeks, my friend's took 15 weeks. For goodness sake, make sure you register for the update system which renews automatically. Under the changed system, the DBS is for you not the place where you work so at least you only have to go through it once.

You wouldnt believe how many organisations don't get this. I've had organisations question the fact that my DBS was requested by a different sector than the one they are in.

The equivalent of saying "you need a medical dbs and yours is educational." It's ridiculous.

I've had to explain it so many times I sometimes doubt myself!

MotherOfLittlePeople · 02/10/2019 13:16

Update service? How long do they last? Did you all pay for yours yourself?

OP posts:
Superzowie · 02/10/2019 13:24

Update service costs £13 a year. Yes, you have to pay for it yourself and it lasts indefinitely.

Because it's online, employers can check it and it is updated in real time so, if you committed an offence, it would automatically show up on there.

MotherOfLittlePeople · 02/10/2019 14:23

I meant do you pay for your DBS check your selfs? Sorry for confusion lol

Employers are supposed to pay for a DBS,but not alldo, agencies sometimes charge a fee on top of the DBS fee.

The Update service, as someone has already said has an annual fee of £13, it was 12 nut it doesn't go up every year.

But it is well worth it, any employer can check online, and you can see who has checked and when.

Tojigornot · 03/10/2019 03:27

NHS staff now have to pay for their own DBS checks - at least that is that the case in every Trust I have been in for the last 5 years (5 of them in that time I think).

The update service should solve this problem for people who need more than one or regular checks, but it’s really not well understood - at least in the NHS - I have had to argue about why they can use that instead of making me pay for a new one a couple of times.

StrongerThanIThought76 · 03/10/2019 06:19

My new colleague's DBS has been at stage 4 for weeks. The 60 days expires on Monday, when HR can start to chase it. Frustrating all round as she has to be supervised at all times when on site.

MotherOfLittlePeople · 03/10/2019 07:11

Thank you.

@StrongerThanIThought76 he can't even start the job until the DBS check is completed. It's subject too it coming back ok. Still on stage 4 today.

@bellalou1234 how long from the printing stage till it came? It's now been completed and apparently sent. I don't think it'll be here till Thursday but the new job wants a copy before arranging start date but want him to start ASAP.

Usually just a couple of days in the post for mine once they can be seen on the system.

Not sure how it works if you've had to request your own for work though, when mine is done via the group i volunteer with we're good to go as soon as they can see it on the system. They don't need the paper copy.

If you do want to register with the update service, you have 19 days from the time the DBS is issued. Well worth it to save having to go through the process again.

So far I haven't had any problems using the update service with any of the groups I volunteer with, but non are able to accept a paper copy of my DBS without access to the updates, as the paper copy only contains the information on past charges/issues. In theory if the police had someone under surveillance or who was part of an ongoing investigation they would not include details of that in the paper sent to the individual, it would only go to the agency requesting the check.

MotherOfLittlePeople · 10/10/2019 07:25

Now having issues off he can't see it online, not arrived in the post and when he has rang up to see why he can't see it online they say details are incorrect so they can't tell him anything! Even though the details he gave new employment are correct so not sure what has happened but now need to wait for the new employer to sort out what may or may not be wrong.

How did it go?
My Enhanced DBS is at the Police, stage 4, step but has been stuck there for two weeks. There is nothing that could be causing a problem (I regularly gain DBS checks as I have various roles - Counsellor/Support Worker/NHS Housekeeper). I’ve emailed them as it it is difficult to talk to them as the recorded message advises to go online, but they’ve not responded as yet.
Just wondered how long it is generally taking these days? 😊
