Old fashioned things you do?

Are there things you do that you realise have become old fashioned? I din't mean things you do for affect like lighting your house with antique oil lamps. But normal things that have slowly over time become old fashioned.

If I make salad we still have lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes, and that is it.

I think there's only letter writing by hand and use of a mangle on this thread that I consider to be old fashioned.

MOnna Where do you live that doesn't allow you to vote simply because you're a woman?

Deboucle · 28/09/2019 22:21

I do hand written thank you notes

Tweetingmagpie · 28/09/2019 22:23

I wear an apron all the time during the day at home and I write lists on actually paper instead of my phone!

BenWillbondsPants · 28/09/2019 22:27

I don't think that hanging washing outside is old fashioned, I don't know anyone who doesn't do this.

SallyWD · 28/09/2019 22:29

I write letters to friends and family.

MabelFurball · 28/09/2019 22:32

We have sheets and blankets on the bed.
Use CDs and tapes.
Don't have a microwave, dishwasher or tumble dryer.
Have a landline.
Have a CRT computer monitor.
Read books and magazines.
Put washing out on the line.

BikeRunSki · 28/09/2019 22:32

I darn socks and elbows.
We never stopped having milk delivered.
Write thank you letters, and expect the DC to too.

Hefzi · 28/09/2019 22:41

Only use handkerchiefs
Hand-write condolence letters
Ditto thank you letters - also for supper/lunch/something kind someone has done for me
Iron (if MN is anything to go by, it's not that common!)
Repair clothes (including replacing zips)
Resole shoes/boots
Wear a signet ring
Listen to the wireless (even when it's on the computer Confused)
Cook from scratch
Never have takeaways
Read books
Don't watch/own television (or films/Netflix/Prime)
Read a paper paper on Sunday
Wear hats and headscarves
Had no issues with paying for plastic bags as I used a basket anyway

I think I am actually my grandmother... Grin

LucilleBluth · 28/09/2019 23:03

Hanging out washing is not old fashioned, listening to the radio is not old fashioned ....half the stuff on the thread is not old fashioned.

Legomadx2 · 28/09/2019 23:07

I use soap not shower gel

BenWillbondsPants · 28/09/2019 23:33

I don't know anyone who doesn't listen to the radio either.

Tweetingmagpie · 28/09/2019 23:37

I never listen to the radio! I have Bluetooth in my car and Spotify so I can listen to my own music.

MustardJumpers · 28/09/2019 23:37

I haven't listened to the radio for a couple of years now.

But I wouldn't describe listening to it as old fashioned really, likewise hanging washing out, cooking from scratch etc aren't old fashioned.

confusedrn · 28/09/2019 23:40

I make tea with loose leaves in a pot

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2019 23:48

Fountain pen and bottled ink

Bar soap

I like to make 1970s salad to have with quiche - cucumber, lettuce, radishes, spring onions, tomatoes, salad cream

No dish washer

theconstantinoplegardener · 29/09/2019 00:07

I keep random pieces of paper (junk mail letters etc) and use the blank side for writing shopping lists, as scrap paper for the DC etc.

My granny used to do this in the post-war years, so it is old-fashioned, but also quite current with the need to reduce our use of the earth's resources.

managedmis · 29/09/2019 01:08

Blush.
I make do and mend to a certain extent.
If I put the oven in there's at least two things in it.
I do a lot of cooking, from scratch

Love getting washing out on the line to dry and also love a man in a decently ironed shirt

^

This too. Especially well dressed men.

KnitFastDieWarm · 29/09/2019 01:39

Set my hair in pin curls and sleep in a hairnet
Use proper setting lotion, a bristle brush and hair pomade to brush out my hair in the morning
Knit most of my own jumpers and cardigans. Likewise, if my dc needs a jumper, I’ll knit it
Prefer handknitted socks (and darn them)
Sew my own clothes
Mend everything and sew on buttons
Wear stockings
Clean with vinegar and bicarb
Use bars of soap
Walk or get the bus everywhere

BUT

I couldn’t live without my kindle, smartphone, dishwasher and Netflix! Grin

Passthecake30 · 29/09/2019 07:33

I write birthdays etc on a calendar rather than use my phone.

EleanorReally · 29/09/2019 07:57

I listen to the radio
hang washing on the line
saw on buttons
read books
write lists
write on calender
can't believe this makes me old fashioned.

Arrowfanatic · 29/09/2019 08:11

I have a paper diary, i write lista in a notebook, i will mend clothes unless they are not able to be saved, and i hang clothes to dry as much as possible (although that's less old fashioned and more to stop my electric bill going any higher)

Natsku · 29/09/2019 08:20

I write appointments etc. up on a calendar too. And hang it in the downstairs loo so I'm reminded of what's happening this month each time I go for a wee :D

MaidenMotherCrone · 29/09/2019 08:23

. My dc are not allowed computers or to watch tv

If they are over 5 You are not doing them any favours.

cinderellainyellakissedafella · 01/10/2019 11:05

Maiden
It doesn't make me a bad parent if I don't let the dc watch tv / use computers. Damned if you do, damned if you don't....

cinderellainyellakissedafella · 01/10/2019 11:07

I also keep random bits of paper( old bills etc ) for writing shopping lists and the like on.

The dc has quilts on their beds
