Old fashioned things you do?

Are there things you do that you realise have become old fashioned? I din't mean things you do for affect like lighting your house with antique oil lamps. But normal things that have slowly over time become old fashioned.

If I make salad we still have lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes, and that is it.

@SecretWitch it's actually more old fashioned to use text speak than to write full English. I don't know anyone under 30 who uses u or gr8 or anything..

tectonicplates · 28/09/2019 19:14

@jennymanara I was really shocked when I learned that lots of people apparently throw clothes away if the buttons fall off! Seriously! According to various articles, up to 60% of people can't sew on a button. Unless you have a disability, I really can't understand how anyone wouldn't be able to work it out for themselves. I don't think I was ever taught. I don't even consider myself to be someone who can sew. I just think of sewing on a button as an average, mundane thing to do.

I also found out from another thread that some people don't get shoes re-heeled. There are people who'll just throw the shoes away once the heels have worn down. It makes no sense to me at all.

Nanasueathome · 28/09/2019 19:15

I make a lovely rice pudding

dementedma · 28/09/2019 19:16

Love to write with a fountain pen, wash dishes in the sink and dry washing on the line. Children hand write thankyou letters. I dont own a microwave and always cook from scratch. Use bicarb of soda to clean stained mugs. Drink tap water rather than bottled.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/09/2019 19:17

I have a shopping list pad.

ohcarriemathison · 28/09/2019 19:18

Don't have a dishwasher so all dishes washed by hand. This has served my DD well for living away at uni.
Sew holes in socks.
Bring up hems.

Sinkingfeeling · 28/09/2019 19:18

I write with a fountain pen and use bottled ink instead of cartridges, use a paper diary and listen to the radio. I’m probably a dinosaur 😊

BenWillbondsPants · 28/09/2019 19:21

I use loose leaf tea
Paper diary
Vinyl records
Bar soap
I do embroidery
Never buy biscuits, always make them myself.

ohcarriemathison · 28/09/2019 19:21

Also have a landline.
Hang washing up outside.
Children play outside all day.

ageingdisgracefully · 28/09/2019 19:21

I write on paper with a fountain pen.
I have a paper diary.
I eat spam sandwiches.
I read books made of paper.
A boiled egg with soldiers is an actual meal.
I make tea in a teapot, and drink from china cups, not mugs.
I eat paste sandwiches.

SlatternIsTrying · 28/09/2019 19:22

I still use sew on labels.

Apart from the odd ‘hv’ refuse to use text speak when texting.

Cook most meals from scratch, although I am glad ready meals exist for those nights when it’s just not practical to have anything else.

I still use a paper diary.

I think email can be the work of the devil in a work context. Emails seem to require instant responses but sometimes a more measured response is preferable. I have also noticed a distinct like of etiquette/good manners in email exchanges.

Whitejasmine · 28/09/2019 19:22

I sew buttons etc and attached a ribbon to my kids gloves when they were younger to thread through their coat sleeves
Keep gift bags/wrapping paper to re-use
I stuff a hankie up my sleeve when I’ve got the sniffles
Don’t use social media at all and in fact barely use my phone
Get shoes re-heeled and clothes altered to fit properly

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 28/09/2019 19:23

I darn socks and also my clothes (not so much for the kids, they wear things out properly and there is no mending them!). I make preserves, soap and clothes. I brew beer, pluck poultry and scrub my front step. In a long dress. I have a secret theory that I'm actually Medieval.

ControversialFerret · 28/09/2019 19:23

Alter and mend my own clothes.
Make my own curtains and cushion covers.
Polish shoes properly.
Darn socks (only my thick woolly hiking ones though).
Bake my own cakes and decorate instead of buying them.
Write and post thank you cards after birthdays and Christmas.

habibihabibi · 28/09/2019 19:24

Set the table for breakfast and supper with cloth napkins everyday.

DontCallMeShitley · 28/09/2019 19:24

I repair things I like - glue broken things
Turn shirt collars
Cut buttons off old clothes that go for ragging to re-use
Wash ironing board covers and use felt underneath, put a new cover on top of old clean ones
No text speak
Save soap ends and make a new bar or stick it on the top of the old one depending on how thin it is
Soap instead of shower gel
Brush stair carpet and under sofa cushions
Write shopping lists by hand, on paper scraps, not saved in phone
Use an old phone with no internet

ControversialFerret · 28/09/2019 19:24

Oh and bar soap (much nicer) and washing outside when weather permits!

tectonicplates · 28/09/2019 19:26

You have a point, but email means you have a record of what was discussed. It helps to deal with That Person in the office who always claims to have no recollection of important conversations, and can provide proof of bullying etc.

RaininSummer · 28/09/2019 19:26

Most of these things seem more like common sense/thrifty than old fashioned to me.

Whitejasmine · 28/09/2019 19:26

ageingdisgracefully - ooh, paste sandwiches!! I was thinking about those the other day - I had them for lunch pretty much every day as a child Shock crab and beef were my favourites. Usually followed by a slice of manor house cake - Does anyone remember that?

MonnaLisa · 28/09/2019 19:27

@Nanasueathome, have you got a recipe for your rice pudding please? thanks!

@ohcarriemathison: washing outside, me too.

@Sinkingfeeling, I also listen to the radio but didn't think that was old fashioned! But my lids never listen to it.

BoudicasBoudoir · 28/09/2019 19:30

I still need a cup of tea at teatime (afternoon). We were brought up to have tea and I still feel that something is missing if I don’t have any! I didn’t realise how old fashioned I was until someone pointed it out.

Bezalelle · 28/09/2019 19:32

I have a desk drawer filled with fountain pens and bottled ink.
I also mend stuff.

BookWitch · 28/09/2019 19:34

I also write with a fountain pen and refill with bottled ink.
Writing with a disposable biro is horrible.

I use a kindle, but I do read paper books as well

HerkyBaby · 28/09/2019 19:36

I use a washing line to dry our washing and plan when to wash towels and bed clothes according to the weather forecast.
