What to pay a 15/16 year old babysitter??

We have made friends with a couple in the area with a 15 nearly 16 year old daughter, the daughter has offered to babysit for us so we can go out at the end of the month, nothing fancy just drinks with another couple, She’s a lovely girl and no have doubts she will be fine with the children and we will only be a maximum 2 minute walk away.

I’m in a quandary on what to pay her? Would £8 per hour be too little??

We’ve never had a babysitter before so have absolutely no idea 🤷‍♀️

All my students who are 16-18 work for roughly £4 per hour at McDonald’s of similar. I can’t see how watching tv on someone’s sofa while eating junk food is worth more than this!

I pay £7-8 per hour here in the SW. I use girls around 15 and they usually have lots of work offers of babysitting. I'm entrusting them with my most precious goods so happy to pay. I don't buy food but leave snacks out. No one here would babysit for £5 hour but that could be the area.

Dsis pays £10 hour, about 30 minutes outside London.

Used to pay mine £10 an hour almost 10 years ago

Age doesn't matter- you pay for the job required.

It depends. Are the kids going to be mainly in bed so the babysitter will be sitting there watching TV? Or are the kids up and about so she’ll be entertaining them/feeding them/putting to bed? And how many? One or two well behaved or tyrants? I’d pay more the more I’d expect her to do (and incentive for her to want to do it again). £5 for just sitting there, £8 for more active duties/more than two kids, no limit if kids are numerous and a real handful!

I replied to someone who said they were disgusted at the thought of teens charging £12.50 and they were entilted.

My reply clearly went to the wrong place im new here and messed that up haha. X

If I had to pay mine £8 per hour I'd never afford to go out! We pay ours £20 for 7:30pm to 12:30 and provide a pizza. She is more than happy with that and she's 17.

£4 an hour!!! My niece is 16 she charges £10 per hour only in full hours no half hours and payment on booking

She's booked right up to Christmas and new year and has a regular Friday night family

I really don't like people taking advance of young people and if that was my daughter I'd be knocking on your door to tell you - it's an awful attitude And poor for the responsibility involved it's like that's all you think all your kids are worth!

We're in central London and I pay £15 per hour for our babysitter to look after our 2yo.

I'm not sure age should come into the price but experience and the number and age of the childeren they're looking after should.

If she's just starting out and doesn't have to do nappies, bathing or putting to bed then I'd have thought £8-10 an hr is ok.

She should be the one setting the fee!

WildfellAnne · 21/09/2022 20:21

My DD got £10 an hour four years ago.

justdontkno1 · 21/09/2022 20:25

I pay 10 euros an hour in Ireland , what’s the min wage in the uk?? Some of the quotes here seem so low for a few hours . 20 pounds for an evening!! That’s v v low

Kellyk82 · 21/09/2022 21:35

Lol it seems people would rather use the money for drinks& nightlife with no qualms and happy to skimp on making sure they actually pay someone a decent amount to look after what should be their most precious cargo..

It's not only just sitting in a house whilsts children sleep its the peace of mind that cknes with it and it's hard to put a price on that.
