What to pay a 15/16 year old babysitter??

We have made friends with a couple in the area with a 15 nearly 16 year old daughter, the daughter has offered to babysit for us so we can go out at the end of the month, nothing fancy just drinks with another couple, She’s a lovely girl and no have doubts she will be fine with the children and we will only be a maximum 2 minute walk away.

I’m in a quandary on what to pay her? Would £8 per hour be too little??

We’ve never had a babysitter before so have absolutely no idea 🤷‍♀️

Agreed, plus taxi or lift home.

I'd pay £5/£6 an hour. But if you were happy to pay £8 an hour I'm sure she'll be delighted!

No wonder no couple can afford to go out!

Drives me wild when I see threads ..... 'we haven't been out as a couple for years' ....
Now we all know why! Angry

My dd would do it for less(I'm assuming that this was at least 2-3 hours) She'd be over the moon with £8 ph but knows what minimum wage for her age is so knows that's generous considering that it's mainly listening out for the kids while chilling.

PegasusReturns · 28/09/2019 14:07

@Oblomov19

How on earth is knowing your value and charging accordingly "self entitled"?!

I hope you don't have daughters Shock

Oblomov19 · 28/09/2019 14:07

My 16 year old son gets paid £5 an hour, for hard graft gardening.

Best I get him babysitting for 40 Quid! Hmm

Oblomov19 · 28/09/2019 14:08

"knowing your value".
I disagree. I just think it's too much.

33goingon64 · 28/09/2019 14:11

We pay a 16 year old £5 per hour. We pay a nursery nurse from nursery £8 per hour.

Wheelson · 28/09/2019 14:49

For a 15 year old I would say £5ph plus snacks.

Backtoschooool · 28/09/2019 15:00

I pay £6 an hour but round it up if I’m between hours.

Saltnpepper5 · 28/09/2019 15:11

12 years ago when I was 15 I got £20 for 3/4 hours plus drinks/snacks and they would make sure I got home OK.

CherryBathBomb · 28/09/2019 15:15

Id say £25 plus snacks and taxi home

Dowser · 28/09/2019 15:16

£5 per hour and leave drinks and snacks

LittleGinBigGin · 28/09/2019 15:40

Thanks everyone.

I did the simple thing and asked her mum to ask her.

So for 7.30-11.30pm, I will be paying her £30 plus will have snacks/pizza/drinks. I’ve been given a list of what she likes.

We will also make sure she gets home ok.

My DD (16) gets £5 per hour before midnight and £8 per hour after.

msmith501 · 28/09/2019 16:04

Always our babysitter £30 plus help yourself to food and when we get home we'll make sure you get home safely. It's not a minimum wage job... it's someone looking after someone precious and they need rewarding. Also, they are more likely to come back at short notice.

BertrandRussell · 28/09/2019 16:06

Just so long as she doesn’t take 10 mysterious tins home....

Equimum · 28/09/2019 16:11

We use an agency babysitter and her actual pay is £8.50/hr (plus flat £4 booking fee). We tend to tip well so it’s more £10/hr. when we tried to save money by using a local teenager, they all said they charged £10-12.50/hr (hence sticking with the agency - qualified career in her 40s).

SpinMill · 28/09/2019 16:15

We pay £20 for the night plus taxi home. On the odd occasion we've ended up staying out later, we've given our babysitter an extra tenner which she's happy with, she comes back anyway so I assume she must be.

Fuma · 28/09/2019 16:29

Fiver an hour, snacks and taxi home. That's plenty isn't it? There are grown adults doing actual work for £8 an hour so a fiver to watch telly and eat pizza is plenty I think.

inwantofadvice · 28/09/2019 16:35

£20 and pizza, but that was 10 years ago

allypally32 · 28/09/2019 16:39

My 15 yo DD gets £5 and hour and she is happy with that

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/09/2019 16:42

I pay a teen £40 for an evening. Normally 6.-11pm that includes putting five primary age dc to bed at 7.30.

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/09/2019 16:43

She is 18 wouldn’t expect a 15/16 year old to have that much responsibility.
