Halloween - do your kids go Trick or treating?

Hello.
Just wondering what you do (if anything) for Halloween? Do you take you're kids trick or treating?
I have a 5yo and no invites to any Halloween parties as yet, so considering taking her to a few neighbours houses trick or treating instead & maybe carving a pumpkin. Would like to do something she'd find fun.
... and yes it's still over a month away so this is a little premature!

Yes 5yo dd and 3yo dd have for the past 2 years. Most people on my dads street go all out decorating houses so we go there and only visit the decorated ones. Last year we also carved pumpkins.

valleysareus · 26/09/2019 14:52

My kids do but only to the houses with decorations up or a pumpkin in the window.

Heismyopendoor · 26/09/2019 14:53

Trick or treating is very popular where I live. Children go out for hours!! I’m not joking!!

Personally, we don’t celebrate Halloween so we do something else with the kids away from the house on the 31st.

We've never been to a Hallowe'en party; we've never even been invited to one. Yes, I take my dc trick or treating. We go up and down our street, visiting only the decorated houses, and get enough sweets to last them almost a month or so if they have one or two each a day. We put a lamp inside a pumpkin bucket, put that on our doorstep and had out sweets to any callers. I don't get dressed up but my children do.

Twickerhun · 26/09/2019 14:55

Nope!

formerbabe · 26/09/2019 19:02

I hated the idea but after much pleading from my dc we went for the first time last year. It was really fun. We only went to the houses which were decorated...loads of children from their school were out and about on the same roads and lots of the houses we went to were people we know from school and the area too. It had quite a community spirit about it. We are going this year too.

Windydaysuponus · 26/09/2019 19:05

We got ddog an outfit and dc took her along with us!!
Fab night!! Even teen ds's came!!
Only knock if there are decorations or a pumpkin!

mamaduckbone · 26/09/2019 19:16

We did for a few years - it was quite nice around our local area and we went with friends so it was a bit of a giggle. We only went to decorated houses and there were lots of families from school around.
Thankfully ds1 is too old now and ds2 is on school residential so we're off the hook. I think it works with little ones but past 10 it starts to look grabby and can be a bit intimidating.

Jupiters · 26/09/2019 19:36

I'm not a fan, but if you only go to houses that are decorated then that's fine. It's going to the undecorated houses that would be an issue.

wendz86 · 26/09/2019 19:38

Yes only houses with decorations . They really enjoy it .

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/09/2019 19:40

Yes, only houses with decorations and only early in the evening. Lots do it here.

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 26/09/2019 19:40

Yes, just to the houses with lit pumpkins.

There are quite a few American expats around here who really go all out with decorations and buy in a veritable mountain of sweets.

valleysareus · 26/09/2019 19:47

When I was a kid we went to every house decorated or not dressed in our black bin bags and home made witches hats lol. Everything is so much bigger these days!

bobstersmum · 26/09/2019 19:52

Last year my sons were 4 and 5 and they each asked a friend to join us and we all went just in our neighbourhood, we had never been before and we weren't sure how well received it would be, but people had gone to special effort to make goody bags for them it was so lovely! We are planning to do the same again.

Yellredder · 26/09/2019 19:56

It's a big thing in our village - we only go to decorated houses though. Fab atmosphere with everyone out!

Ffsnosexallowed · 26/09/2019 19:59

My dds go guising. At least they do something for their sweeties!

Spied · 26/09/2019 20:05

Organised Halloween walk here.
Suitable for age 3+ and done by local kids theatre in the local park.
DD 8 often wants to go out trick or treating afterwards and we do go but only around our small estate.

jackparlabane · 26/09/2019 20:09

Trick or treating here - we do our road and maybe the next two, until buckets are full/kids want to get home. A couple friends on the next street have a bit of a party but usually I just take a glass of wine as the kids want to move on.

x2boys · 26/09/2019 20:09

Yes mine do although ds1 is 13 at Xmas so not sure he will this year, I also get some sweeties and decorations in for the callers ,this is Munster though expect a lot of replays saying it's begging and an American import etc

x2boys · 26/09/2019 20:10

Mumsnet Ffs!

flowerycurtain · 26/09/2019 20:11

Nope.

Can't stand Halloween as a celebration.

Always glad I live at the end of a very long farm drive!

Winsomelosesome · 26/09/2019 20:18

Well it's called guising round here (Def not an American import) but yes mine do, just to the houses that welcome it (same ones every year, very ott with their house & garden decs, some are pretty spectacular actually). Then back to our house or a friends for apple dooking and spooky cakes. Do you have any friends you could with OP? Makes it a bit more fun plus I love seeing all the toddler siblings dressed as pumpkins Grin.

Allthepinkunicorns · 26/09/2019 20:21

Yes I take ds 6 trick or treating. We only knock on doors that have decorated for Halloween and I get loads of sweets in for any trick or treaters who knock on ours.

zukiecat · 26/09/2019 20:25

Samhain for me, and definitely not an American import!

I used to take my girls guising when they were little

Ticklemeelmo · 26/09/2019 20:37

I'm late thirties and always used to go trick or treating when I was a child, it's not a recent American import
