Halloween - do your kids go Trick or treating?

Hello.
Just wondering what you do (if anything) for Halloween? Do you take you're kids trick or treating?
I have a 5yo and no invites to any Halloween parties as yet, so considering taking her to a few neighbours houses trick or treating instead & maybe carving a pumpkin. Would like to do something she'd find fun.
... and yes it's still over a month away so this is a little premature!

Yes. We only go to decorated houses and we also hand out sweets.

Every year there's the same shit about it being an Americanisation...ffs, just Google it.

My own dc doesn't, I dont like it, however here it's a thing so I keep a lit pumpkin out between 5 and 8 for the tinies and then bring it in so noone comes. I love our local system!

I really don't like it. My DCs, 22, 20 and 17 never did it as I felt it was begging. 15- 20 years ago, there wasn't the " just go to decorated houses" or those with a pumpkin in the window.
I always bought a bag of treats as I felt intimidated, lots of teens, really not many Tinies at all. But I never didn't give out treats. ( was always tempted though, when asked "trick or treat?" to say..."Ooh, I'll have a treat please").
Totally lost my sense of humour though on a 1st Nov, going out to the car, freezing morning, to find oil and egg on the windscreen.
It was parked a way off, so it was just malicious, as they wouldn't have known it was was my car, and as I said, all " visitors" got a treat anyway.

I do really like the philosophy now, of only going to decorated houses. That's good.

DS is 3 and he has since he was 1. I did it as a child too, it isn’t a new fad.

SuzieQ10 · 26/09/2019 23:13

I think I did go trick or treating as a child (I'm now 29) but we had friends living on our road so it was only to their houses, if I remember correctly. One neighbour had a Halloween party most years which involved party games, face painting and pumpkin carving. A lot of fun & I'd probably prefer something like this for DC over trick or treating but sadly it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

When we were kids we used to ask for a Penny for Halloween. I’m not sure I like the idea of DC eating sweets from strangers. Nobody decorates round here so I wouldn’t be sure which houses to go to anyway.

Stompythedinosaur · 26/09/2019 23:20

Absolutely! We took them when they were little think they will probably go with friends this year.

They love it, and most of the neighbours join in (we live in a tiny rural village where everyone knows each other, which helps).

Barbarara · 26/09/2019 23:38

Why not organize a Halloween party yourself, and ask some other kids?

GaudyNight · 27/09/2019 00:01

Yes. We live in a village, and it’s sweet, considerate and non-threatening — no one knocks at undecorated houses, it’s primary school age children, and the church, the pub and the shop always do something. The pub often dresses up a bunch of lifesize skeletons and puts them on barstools and gives out sweets, and the last vicar used to dress up and chase swarms of delighted smallies around the churchyard. Some houses go to huge amounts of trouble and set up spooky sound affects or spooky walks through the garden etc.. Though I’m still traumatised from last year when I met a terrier wearing a spider costume.

It's guising here. My youngest still goes out. And I make all the kids here do a turn before they get any sweeties.

Willow2017 · 27/09/2019 00:23

Mine are too old now but have gone guising for years as do most of the local kids. Its great fun, we decorate outside and give out a load of sweets to all the kids. They have to tell a joke or sing a song to get anything though. Even the younger teens dress up in fab costumes, its lovely to see them all having fun.

Primary school my kids went to always had an awesome Halloween party run by the mums.

Have a nice time with your dd.
