Local anaesthetic at dentist - is this normal?

Bluewavescrashing · 23/09/2019 12:42

Just got home from dentist, I had numbing gel on my gums and 8 injections of anaesthetic into my cheek (hurt like fuck but necessary). I now feel like I've inhaled anaesthetic. The inside of my nasal passages is numb, behind my eyes is numb, my face from just below eyes is numb. Is this normal? I'm obviously glad not to be in pain but was I given too much?

I’ve had the numb nose / nostrils / everything below the eyes before. I had a tricky root canal and ended up with several injections. It was odd as I felt like I couldn’t breathe properly, and the tingling sensation in my nose was horrible. I kept pinching my nose when I got as it felt missing. It wore off fine just took a little longer than normal (a few hrs longer maybe?)

CustardySergeant · 23/09/2019 13:00

Why not phone the dental surgery and ask them if these things are to be expected after so many injections. I would guess they are, but I'm not a dentist so speak to them for info/reassurance.

Grin It does sound like you were given too much, but hopefully it'll wear off in a couple of hours. Can you amuse yourself by looking at your deadened face in the mirror and poking at it?

Don't try to eat or drink anything! I forgot once after the dentist and only realised my mistake when my mouthful of tea dribbled all over me.

FlibbertyGiblets · 23/09/2019 13:02

Yes had that too. Weird cold eyelid as well - and all round strangeness. Soon wears off!

FlibbertyGiblets · 23/09/2019 13:03

Ps you were v brave, well done you.

ShippingNews · 23/09/2019 13:04

Yep, normal. I had that last time after a tricky extraction. It'll wear off.

BusyDoingNothingx · 23/09/2019 13:05

Yeah all normal should go away within 4 hours

Bluewavescrashing · 23/09/2019 13:05

I can't phone the dentist as I can't talk... The new receptionist tried to ask me loads of questions as I was paying and then the manager gently told her 'I think this patient needs to go home, don't worry you're all done now' and I gratefully buggered off.

I feel like I'm dribbling and I'm not. The cat is looking at me strangely. 😂

Internally grinning at deadened face in the mirror - real life resting bitch face!

Yes it is normal depending on the work that needs doing. everyone who is trained to give local anaesthetic knows what the maximum dose is for any one area.
For example I can put a maximum of 4.4 mils into a big toe, no more. Most of the time I'll put in 2.2 and it will be fine but some need a little more.
Denstistry is no different, they probably just put the max dose in especially if it was a tricky procedure.
Anaesthetic in your front teeth is awful, it feels like it's gone all the way to your forehead and makes your eyes feel weird.

Bluewavescrashing · 23/09/2019 13:12

To be fair I did ask for the max dose as I just can't cope with pain in my mouth. My injections were just in my cheeks and roof of my mouth but my eyes feel like they are watering. They aren't though.

Where's my sticker for being brave? 😁

I once got given way too much anesthetic and my eye muscles froze. It was surreal.

LookImAHooman · 23/09/2019 13:28

Hnnnnnrgh at the thought of injections into the roof of your mouth. Well done! Gin

Bluewavescrashing · 23/09/2019 13:30

@Tophat24 thank you 😃

Seriously considering sending DH out for vodka later to aid my recovery as it wears off. I shall drink it through a straw a la Edina Monsoon.

I had an injection in order for the dentist to do work on one of my upper teeth - it made my eyes go funny and I was seeing double. It went pretty quickly, but even the dentist was quite worried as he said he'd never had that before.

It was horrible.

Damntheman · 23/09/2019 14:02

I've had this before, I've also felt it in my arms and all down into one leg, but I have a medical history of overreacting to anaesthetic.

It's done now, well done for getting through it!

BunchMunch · 23/09/2019 14:08

The last time I had dental anaesthetic I went all funny, could feel my heart and head pounding. I felt like I was going to explode! Very strange but only lasted a minute then I was OK again.

Put your feet up op and relax, you deserve it!

Lonecatwithkitten · 23/09/2019 14:44

If they have nerve blocked a branch of the facial nerve then the numbness you are feeling is normal. It usually wears off in about 6 hours.

amusedbush · 23/09/2019 16:01

I've had this once when the dentist worked one of my top teeth. He numbed everything from my eyeball to my neck, it was bizarre!

Bluewavescrashing · 23/09/2019 17:10

I'm feeling a lot more normal now! Just managed a nice cup of tea Brew

matcatlady is talking shite. There is no maximum dose per area of the body. The maximum dose is based on an individuals body weight. I can guarantee that you didn’t have the maximum dose.

Heatherjayne1972 · 23/09/2019 19:33

Yes it’s fairly normal because of the way the nerves lie in there
If you’re concerned call them and ask

Bluewavescrashing · 23/09/2019 19:39

I only weigh 8.5 stone - I'm very short - so most drugs have a potent effect on me!
