Sorry, another what should I do thread! I have had a achilles tendonitis for a year. Both feet sadly. Been doing exercises and yoga stretches which have helped. On weds morning my left calf and ankle became incredibly painful and I was struggling to walk. Saw a gp who saod tendon still intact and to do exercises and rest with foot elevated which I've been doing. I was just coming upstairs and i heard a snapping noise...some pain amd some slight swelling now. Can thos wait or do I need to get this seen to? :(

get it seen to.

BringTheBounceBack · 21/09/2019 21:46

Eeee shit. I suffer from AT too, that’s my worst nightmare, I can’t get up from any seat without warming my ankles up first.
I’d probably phone nhs24 for advice first.

This happened to me .. you need to go straight to A and E ...
They will set in plaster immediately to help start the healing for the tendon to reconnect ...
This will just be a temporary plaster until they decide best option for treatment for you .
For some it’s surgery others a succession of plasters .
Please don’t delay seeing treatment right now .. the quicker you start the better recovery outcome you will have ...

Good luck ... it’s a tough one ... but witk hard and it will recover almost as good as new ...

babbi · 21/09/2019 21:57

Sorry. * with hard work and intense physio .... it can repair very well

BrexitSucks · 21/09/2019 22:04

let us know what A&E say has happened? I hope you get to go home soon.

Sat. night in A&E sounds ... not ideal.
(to other posters) Why is A&E so important to go to tonite & not tomorrow; what do they do tonite that couldn't wait until tomorrow? Pain relief maybe, I guess.

Swishyswash · 21/09/2019 22:10

I had the same happen last year. Plaster cast for 2 weeks then surgery. Needed to have a tendon transfer from my foot.

8 week recovery post surgery. The tendinitis was so painful before the rupture it was a relief to get it sorted.

babbi · 21/09/2019 22:23

@BrexitSucks - they should put in plaster immediately to limit movement of the leg and the tendon to prevent further damage and to encourage the tendon to start to knit back together immediately .
The tendon will be frayed at the edges and it’s crucial to ensure it doesn’t get worse - this can be a tricky injury to repair well .

A leg break would actually be easier ..!

So they didn't put it in plaster, they still don't know what's wrong with it?

AnyFucker · 22/09/2019 06:27

They are scanning it to find out the extent of the damage. Don't put any weight on it, op.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 22/09/2019 07:35

Lots of luck with it op. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's not as bad as you fear! I've had AT for a few years now and I dread this happening.

GrandmaSharksDentures · 22/09/2019 07:42

Are you in a (front) plaster cast? Have you been given blood thinner injections?

Namechangeyorkshire · 22/09/2019 08:14

@Hoooo So sorry you have this. It is a really traumatic injury and a long recovery timescale. The normal treatment these days is conservative - Put in cast and then boot with physio unless you're extremely active. This treatment in reality is shit and has a much higher failure rate than surgery and potentially a permanent limp. Won't go through my history but push them hard to do a surgical reconnection. The good thing is they are doing a scan which many hospitals don't even do so the consultant will have a good view

If you tell them you are highly physically active, ie do running etc then it will sway their decision

Whichever treatment ....get walking as soon as you can. You need to build up to miles every day which promotes healing. I got up to 7 miles every day with coffee stop in the middle😁

Hoooo · 22/09/2019 09:06

No.
Pain meds and crutches til tomorrow.
They think its still intact?
I won't be doing anything today !

Hoooo · 22/09/2019 09:07

No blood thinners...should I take soms aspirin.
Calves are same size, no redness or swelling

OP posts:
Hoooo · 22/09/2019 09:14

The inside of my ankle is swollen. Not hugely, but def swollen.
Such a horrible sound it made! 🤢

OP posts:
babbi · 23/09/2019 06:49

Good luck today at your scan ...
and yes I remember the sound ... was like a gunshot 😱

aliolilover · 23/09/2019 07:01

No OP you do not need blood thinning unless in a cast. Unless you usually take aspirin, don't start now.

Hoooo · 23/09/2019 07:22

Swishyswash · 23/09/2019 07:59

I didn't hear mine go. I thought I'd knocked it as I walked across a class room. It was so painful when I did it, I thought I was going to faint!

Good luck today.

Hoooo · 23/09/2019 08:01

On weds morning I thought something/someone had hit/kicked me in the calf!
Very odd.
