I know it sounds silly, but it threw me a little. To me it's a normal thing to do - if you dont have a washing machine or dryer or you need to clean a duvet or something - you go to a launderette. He said he's never needed to as his parents always had a washer and if it broke they went to family etc. I guess it just highlighted the difference in our upbringing - we didn't get a washer til i was about ten and Saturday mornings were spent in the launderette. I can still smell the humid soapyness even now.

What normal things have you or your DP never done?

I’ve never been to a laundrette. I’m surprised you think that’s unusual.

BentNeckLady · 21/09/2019 10:50

I’ve never been to a launderette 🤷🏽‍♀️ It’s 2019, it’s hardly a normal thing to do any more.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 21/09/2019 10:50

I think I've been to one once when I was abroad. I don't think it's unusual not to have used them!

I love a laundrette!!

raffle · 21/09/2019 10:52

DS had his first laundrette visit last week when I took the summer duvets in. It was also his last laundrette visit as he decided to tell me loudly “I’ve just seen that lady getting her boobie holders out of that machine” Blush

Only time I've been to a launderette was when my husband had to go collect a suit jacket he'd had dry cleaned. We were Brassic growing up but did have a washing machine. But when it broke we carted everything to my grandma's and used her twin tub.

I don't know that your example fits. Going to a launderette isn't normal for me or anyone I know. It may have been the norm for a

MrsJBaptiste · 21/09/2019 11:01

Never been to a launderette! I thought people on Eastenders were the only ones who use them 😉

DonnaDarko · 21/09/2019 11:01

I've been to a launderette once in my whole life. We always had a washing machine and we weren't well off by any means, we lived in a council estate.

I'm not sure this is that unusual tbh.

Butchyrestingface · 21/09/2019 11:04

I haven’t been to a laundrette. Everyone I know (I’m 40) from Generation X grew up with washing machines in their house. Confused

Never had a tumble dryer growing up and only recently discovered the joys of one.

ooooohbetty · 21/09/2019 11:05

Not that unusual. We didn't ever go to a launderette when I was little because my mum did all our washing by hand in the kitchen sink. I've been once to wash my duvet and it took so long to dry it I took it to the dry cleaners next time.

1ColdFish · 21/09/2019 11:06

I don't go to laundrettes either. They seem to have their own cliquey community. Just like pubs, gyms and chicken shops.

My babys father is Northern so there are lots of things he has experienced that I have not that are normal to him and not me - such as the "pop man" and not eating gravy on my chips until I was 30 and experiencing bus rides where the driver isn't behind a plastic screen 😂

209902e · 21/09/2019 11:07

I've never been to a laundrette either! None locally, don't know where the nearest one would be.

StCharlotte · 21/09/2019 11:07

I doubt my DH has either. Unless it was to drop off a team football kit for a service wash maybe. Although his Mum has not long swapped her twin tub for an automatic!

I only went when I first left home and lived in bedsit land for a few years. Pre-mobile, I used to read, or write letters to friends while I waited. It was proper chill-out time.

(And you could smoke! Can you imagine that now?)

GetUpAgain · 21/09/2019 11:08

I rented shitty flats from age 18-22 with no washing machines so I spent a lot of sundays at launderettes. Very very lonely and depressing part of my week.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 21/09/2019 11:09

Nearest laundrette to me is eight miles away. I think there was one in the town when I was younger.

Bus drivers behind screens must be horrible, for the driver especially.

DaphneFanshaw · 21/09/2019 11:09

I’ve never been either. We used to have one near our house and I’ve just realised that it hasn’t been there for ages. I used to love walking past and smelling it.

StCharlotte · 21/09/2019 11:10

DH has never ridden a bike!

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 21/09/2019 11:10

I’m 36 and in winter Dad and I would be despatched to the laundrette to tumble dry the school uniform on Sunday evenings.

Laniakea · 21/09/2019 11:12

I haven't either! We have a large capacity washing machine so can wash duvets at home.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 21/09/2019 11:12

I’ve never been to a laundrette. I did have/use a twin tub until I moved out at 20 though (I’m only 30 so this wasn’t the ‘norm’)

JellyfishAndShells · 21/09/2019 11:12

I grew up with washing machines - remember the twin tub from when I was small - but also my mother sent out all the bedlinen and my father’s shirts to the laundry service, which collected once a week, and returned everthing starched to within an inch of its life. Student halls and then large flatshares in London with inadequate drying meant launderettes became familiar. Quite a nice place to quietly read, at times.

Then I bought my first flat and totally failed to notice there was nowhere in the oddly shaped but newly fitted out kitchen to put a washing machine. Discovered lovely staff at laundrette at end of road did a very efficient service wash, with great folding skills.

Bouffalant · 21/09/2019 11:13

I've never been to a launderette.

SlimGin · 21/09/2019 11:14

DP has never gone camping, but apparently loves it.
