If it has a 'skull' marking on its back then yes. They only attack when threatened. I took care of mines with fly spray...lots of fly spray!

ChocAuVin · 20/09/2019 22:23

Yes, it is! Are you in Devon by any chance?

ChocAuVin · 20/09/2019 22:25

Steatoda nobilis

ChocAuVin · 20/09/2019 22:27

Sorry, posted too soon! I lived in a garden flat once infested with them. They are generally very timid and fairly beautiful.

However, I wasn’t keen! Delighted they didn’t follow when we moved (which was a genuine concern)

ScrambledSmegs · 20/09/2019 22:28

They only attack if they feel threatened. They're not aggressive. Leave it alone. You'll be fine.

fireandbrimstoneetall · 20/09/2019 22:29

No, I'm London!!! I am sure they are lovely and noble and all, but why oh why did it choose my house??
I had a few of them same in my bathroom this time last year. But nothing since!!!!!
Basically I can never go into my kitchen again!!! 😫😫😫

fireandbrimstoneetall · 20/09/2019 22:30

Attack?!! Oh god!!! I need to leave for Australia or somewhere similar where the spiders are more accommodating...

Good guide to spideys here.
Should not click if weird about spiders.

fireandbrimstoneetall · 20/09/2019 22:43

Just incase it wasn't clear. I HATE spiders. And I hate bitey ones even more! Doesn't help that there is a daily mail sad story about a woman who got bitten by a false widow spider.

Can I just remove it with a glass? And industrial strength gloves??? What shall i doooooooo??
I have a toddler as well, and I don't want her in harm's way... I know I sound ridiculous, but it's really freaked me out.

Please don’t kill it. False widows have been around for ages and ages and ages- we’re just more aware of them now thanks to the press making a huge deal out of them recently. The stories of people who get bitten and have bad reactions are rare but widely reported and hyped up

greathat · 20/09/2019 22:48

I've been bitten by one and I survived :)

IstillmissWoolworths · 20/09/2019 22:48

Honestly, I have loads in and around my house including one that lives under the bathroom basin and have never been bitten by one and have never seen one be aggressive. They run and hide if disturbed. I have 2 small children and am more worried about them getting stung by a wasp than a False Widow.
A glass and card will be fine if you need to move it.

Branleuse · 20/09/2019 22:57

i reckon steatoda grossa, but it could be S.Nobilis. Female.

I wouldnt really worry too much, but you could put a glass over it, and a bit of card/paper under and put her at the end of the garden or the shed or something.

fireandbrimstoneetall · 20/09/2019 22:57

Don't worry, I have no intention of killing it. Just encouraging it to move home... it's been there since yesterday morning so doubt it's in a hurry.
Ugh though. Just ugh. Why do potentially poisonous spiders decide they need to live with me???

NextTrainGoesToBEROWRA · 20/09/2019 23:06

I’ve usually got one living on my kitchen window sill. Poor thing must get really pissed off when I move stuff around, unwittingly pulling its web apart. Soz fella!

fireandbrimstoneetall · 20/09/2019 23:12

For someone who hates spiders, I've just spent an awfully long time researching the Steatoda whatsit to see what my long legged friend is.
Definitely not the grossa one, distinct markings so I think it's def the noblis one.
I never want to see a pic of a spider again... or actually see it hanging around... ugh!

Fortheloveofscience · 20/09/2019 23:21

Yes it’s a false widow. I’m not far from London and see loads of them, they live on the frames of both my front and back door and seem to particularly like the washing line! The latter’s the only place that causes a problem because they do sometimes come in with the laundry, but they’re easy to evict when you spot them. I’ve only been bitten once (on the foot - it was in my sock and it only bit me when I stood on it), it stung a bit and then 24 hours later I couldn’t even tell it’d happened so really no need to panic. However, I do encourage the cellar spiders to stay inside the house in the hope that they’ll mop up any false widows that try to stay inside longer-term.

dontgobaconmyheart · 21/09/2019 03:06

I think it looks like one OP. I had one in my window for a week before I saw it at an angle and clocked the markings. Quite pretty really and I'm scared of spiders, it never left the window.

I googled and had DP put it in a glass and remove a little away from the house as google advised. It also advised they are not likely to bite anyway and mostly people accidentally step on them or crush in bed (vom) hence the bite.

I've had a few now and do get rid because I've got an immune system disorder and just (perhaps wrongly) feel if I got bitten it would cause an issue as I'm not good with insect bites across the board.

BeerandBiscuits · 21/09/2019 08:31

I found one in a corner of the bathroom. Was on hands and knees peering at the markings and the dog came in and ate it Angry.

fireandbrimstoneetall · 21/09/2019 20:22

Sorry to resurrect this horrible thread... spider still there. That's fine, I can cope when I know where it is!

I found this in my bathroom. Can I safely assume that big momma downstairs has relatives???
