I love France

I really do love this country and want to visit it many more times in the future.

Can you please please kindly tell me about all the places you love in Frances (cities, towns, villages, regions) and fantastic holidays or visits you have had there? I'm very well aware that the north and south are like different countries, but I love them equally.

Where haven't I been that I should go?

Would particularly welcome any gite or villa recommendations if you have them.

Merci beaucoup!

Aquitaine coast line - mile upon mile of golden and deserted beaches lined with pine trees.

dementedma · 20/09/2019 19:46

We go to Normandy, as we have friends there. Just love it. They are very rural, all little villages and farms, but Rouen is nice to visit if you want a city.
Beaches tend to be pebbly rather than sandy but I just love it

Annency

Ile de Orleon
Ile de Re
Golf du Morbian in Brittany, specifically Auray, Vannes and

fergusthefrog · 20/09/2019 19:53

I love Deauville and Honfleur in the north when the weather is good.

Annecy as PP mentioned is beautiful, Lyon and the area around lake Geneva is nice too.

Nice is fab, such a lovely city

Paris is my favourite; I live here and my heart is here, I'm british but could never imagine not having a home here.

Bordeaux and La Rochelle too!

I haven't explored much in the middle. I've heard Orleans is a nice day trip from Paris and the Loire valley has lovely spots but I can't think of any I've visited recently.

Lille I would avoid. Rouen is nice but I was a tad disappointed compared to other parts of Normandy.

fergusthefrog · 20/09/2019 19:54

I forgot! Strasbourg!!! Absolutely beautiful and such an interesting history with German and french architecture and culture :)

BentNeckLady · 20/09/2019 19:55

Sarlat is wonderful. The whole of the dordogne region is incredible, I could go there over and over again.

YoungMummy94 · 20/09/2019 19:58

Avignon
Sete
Grasse

Toulouse and Nice are both fab cities.

Anywhere along the Côte d'Azur is beautiful and swimming in the med is the best swimming anywhere.

Ouchy · 20/09/2019 20:00

Another one for the Dordogne - Beynac is utterly stunning, as is Sarlat

smemorata · 20/09/2019 20:02

We went to Troyes this year which has a gorgeous medieval town centre - never realised that as we'd stayed in hotels just off the motorway before.

Atalune · 20/09/2019 20:05

Orleans is a really pretty little city. Joan of Arcs house is there.

Bluewavescrashing · 20/09/2019 20:10

The vendee region is great for family holidays. Warmer than the North, lovely beaches, pine forests then the marree (sp) which is perfect for cycling round. Friendly towns. Awesome campsites of a really high standard.

Missingthesea · 20/09/2019 20:19

We really loved Colmar.

caringcarer · 20/09/2019 20:28

We love Brittany so much we bought a house in Morlaix. It is so pretty there nd only 20 mins from Carantec beach and 30 mins from my favorite Plestin Les Greves.

I love France
Wallywobbles · 20/09/2019 20:31

The west coast of Normandy around Granville is lovely.

DippyAvocado · 20/09/2019 20:34

I love France. Almost all the region's have beautiful medieval towns/villages and lovely scenery. My favourites are Brittany - beautiful Cornish-esque coastline, old towns and cities, ancient standing stones, and Dordogne - gorgeous river scenery and castles, caves, historic towns. Both are very crowded in the summer, and the weather in Brittany can be unreliable (although better than Cornwall!).

NomadNoMore · 20/09/2019 20:36

Love it so much I moved here! I'm south of the Loire, very rural, good weather, big skies and incredibly friendly locals.

I love Arles, the Gorges de Verdon, La Rochelle, Normandy, the Somme, the Rhône Valley.....struggling to think of somewhere I don't love.

Cmagic7 · 20/09/2019 20:40

Another one for the Dordogne - but I loved it so much that I moved here so I might be biased. Wink

RomaineCalm · 20/09/2019 20:44

I want to live in St Paul de Vence and eat fresh figs and chèvre washed down with 🍷🍷🍷.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 20/09/2019 20:51

Thanks for all these!

I realise I very rudely didn't add in my own personal favourites after many years of visiting France:

Montpellier
Beziers
Gruisson
Strasbourg
Ceret (practically on the Spanish border)
Uzes
Normoutier

All wonderful places that have given me amazing happy memories.

My favourites are:

The area around Vallon Pont d'Arc in the Ardèche,

Gérardmer in the Hautes Vosges,

and Saint-Jean-Pied-du-Port in the Basque Country.

But I think on our next trip we're going to have a change from mountains and visit Anjou, which looked beautiful when we drove through.

highlandcoo · 20/09/2019 21:21

I love France too OP. And Ceret is fab. Very charming with its huge plane trees, beautiful ironwork on the buildings, and little art galleries. And the best Saturday market for miles around.

Collioure on the coast nearby is very pretty but more touristy. Fun for a day out.

I don't think I've found the nicest part of Beziers yet. When we spent the night there our area wasn't all that lovely.

France is such a varied country and I love how they take pride in their regional specialies and customs. So much more still to explore.

caringcarer · 20/09/2019 21:38

Roquefort en terre is a beautiful floral village and they have artisans too like glass blowing.

Dinan is lovely with lots of old medievel houses and shops.

caringcarer · 20/09/2019 21:41

We used to book with Owners Direct and French Connection before we bought a house there.

ForalltheSaints · 20/09/2019 21:45

Another vote for St Paul de Vence, and nearby Vence with the wonderful chapel designed by Matisse and the artists quarter. Antibes with its market and the Picasso museum too.
