I love France

I really do love this country and want to visit it many more times in the future.

Can you please please kindly tell me about all the places you love in Frances (cities, towns, villages, regions) and fantastic holidays or visits you have had there? I'm very well aware that the north and south are like different countries, but I love them equally.

Where haven't I been that I should go?

Would particularly welcome any gite or villa recommendations if you have them.

Merci beaucoup!

Nancy - amazing square in the old town, a fab park just off it. Lots of restaurants too. River & canal. Lovely architecture (pre-Art Nouveau).

Beaune - Burgundy central! Beautiful town, gorgeous vineyards surrounding it for miles. Do visit the Hospice and get all the history.

And the Loire of course, with all its chateaux (Chenonceau, Chambord). Amboise with Leonardo da Vinci's house - so interesting.

Metz, beautiful town, some cracking architecture.

Loire Valley, it’s amazing. So pretty!

Fellow France lover here.

Languedoc is by far my favourite part.
The scenery, the Mediterranean, the sun, and the wine, my god the wine!!

The area of coast around from Narbonne up to Sete is magnificent and not as busy as the riviera.

It's been a few years since I went there but want to go back there now!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/09/2019 22:52

The Charente Maritime and The Dordogne are our favourite parts.

LOVE France.

Love France & my family has a farmhouse in the Languedoc-Roussillon.

I still have loads of places to visit but I do like Deauville & lle de re. My fave though is the Loire with all the chateaus, it's like stepping into a fairytale book.

Soola · 20/09/2019 23:03

@fergusthefrog I agree, Deauville and Honfleur are delightful.

For a large family/friends, Chateau du Mont is wonderful.

The Limousin. Much less crowded than the Dordogne, and stunningly beautiful.

BoogleMcGroogle · 20/09/2019 23:09

I adore France. We've visited a lot so luckily I've trained my children to love it too. My favourite spots:

The Alps, of course. We've ended up in charge of my father in law's chalet near Evian. Every year we say it's a money vortex and too much bother. Then we get there, and I see my kids free in the mountains and I sniff the air, swim in the lake, eat some cheese and we can't bear to let it go fir another year.

The Var. Little known. Hot. Beautiful.
All of Brittany.
The Dordogne.
The Vendee.
Troyes and Laon.

So lovely.

Frangible · 20/09/2019 23:17

The Morvan in Burgundy, and the Gers.

ivykaty44 · 20/09/2019 23:21

I cycled from Paris to Mont st Michael last year and the towns, city’s and villages on the way were marvellous. 80% of the trip was traffic free cycle path along old railways and through forest paths.

I love so many other places - Charters, Orleans, Samur, St Malo, to name a few

QueenofLouisiana · 21/09/2019 06:12

I’m a Loire Valley junkie. We own a little place near Amboise, such a pretty area. We love Montrichard for the beach on the river Cher, Blois market on Saturday and drives to Saumur and Sancerre for the vineyards and wineries.

We’ve just visited the area near Narbonne for the first time and plan to return- vast beaches(not crowded in August), good seafood and warm evening walks. I was fascinated by Carcassonne.

Ounce · 21/09/2019 06:27

Corsica! Stunning. Addictive.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 21/09/2019 07:33

I also love France. I think I was French in a past life. I've loved it since I was a child. Did a French degree, read and watch everything French and go every year.

My favourite bit is the Alps.

midsomermurderess · 21/09/2019 07:36

I love the Ardeche and Drome is pretty stunning too.

JMoore · 21/09/2019 08:18

My husband is French, so we go to visit the family every year. They are around Le Havre, which is really nice. I love Honfleur. Deauville is lovely, too.

My favourite area is Vendee, around Noirmoutier. Absolutely lovely.

We've also travelled down the coast all the way to Hendaye. Royan was my favourite town.

In the south, Avignon is very beautiful. Of course, Provence is full of tourists, but there are lovely villages a bit away from the coast. Ramatuelle is lovely.

Christmas market in Colmar is magical.

This thread is making me want to buy a house in France! Maybe I'll start making retirement plans...

caringcarer · 25/09/2019 14:50

@smemorata property is really cheap in some parts of France. We bought a 7 bedroom and 2 bathrooms house with a tiny garden only enough for bbq and decking for table and chairs to drink wine only 2k form Morlaix in Brittany, which is lovely scenic port town. House only 200m from a Green route cycle/walking old railway path into town and for 40km in opposite direction and 10 mins walk away from National Forest and 20 mins drive to closest beach. Guess the price it will be much cheaper than your wildest dreams. I showed pics to my sister for her to guess and she was like 350k euros. Nope 77k euros and that included much furniture too.

mammabella1 · 25/09/2019 15:48

Biarritz is fun! With lovely St Jean de Luz just down the road.

Also the entirety of Brittany is wonderful.

MrsCasares · 25/09/2019 18:30

Ciboure is lovely, close to the Spanish border.
