What was your word for geeky/uncool growing up?

Was just about to add to the 'describe your childhood in 3 words' and realised one of the words I would have put probably wouldn't be recognised by lots of people.

Ladgin - no idea of proper spelling. Meant uncool/geeky/embarrassing. I was extremely ladgin growing up - holidays spent going to castles in Wales or on steam trains (thanks Dad) instead of all inclusive in Benidorm like everyone else at school. Happy days Grin.

We were in North Yorkshire, 1980s/90s. What word did you have for this, whereabouts and when? Just wondering how far the ladgin-ness spread?!

I'm 38 and wish there were more opportunities to say ladgin in my day to day life.

  • but I couldn't remember until I read them on this thread!
Goatrider · 20/09/2019 18:20

Swot was probably the equivalent of geek

Naff for something uncool. I still use it but my kids don't get it

Belmo · 20/09/2019 18:24

Spof! Central Scotland.

Where I grew up in Belfast we'd have said gay (if describing someone that was the homosexual type gay, we'd say "actually gay gay"), rare, or gimp (or gimpy), usually follwed by "as fuck". Words reserved for boring people you couldn't be bothered with, and oddly also for your best, closest, mates.

sigmaalphamu · 20/09/2019 18:30

Unfortunately it was gay.., and sad and boff

AravisQueenOfArchenland · 20/09/2019 18:35

We also said muppet. And another mean one was spaz. Never used towards anyone with actual disabilities, but people who were uncool/pathetic (but generally healthy, and neurotypical etc).

StayInYourLaneBoy · 20/09/2019 18:37

Swot

EmmiJay · 20/09/2019 18:53

JemilyJ · 20/09/2019 18:58

Lizaa · 20/09/2019 19:04

Cuffy. Stafford and surrounding villages in the late 80s. Never heard it anywhere since then.

cptartapp · 20/09/2019 19:06

Joey (Deacon). Dreadful really.

HappyDinosaur · 20/09/2019 19:10

@LemonAddict same here, wouldn't use it now though!

Also, 'sad' and 'mev'.

MontBlancHonk · 20/09/2019 19:11

Steg

Anyone else use this?

AravisQueenOfArchenland · 20/09/2019 19:13

My sister just used an old one to describe my neighbours dd (quite a nice child actually, my sis just has no patience with kids), "a bit of a melt".

PivotPivotPivottt · 20/09/2019 19:16

Geek
Gimp
Goon
Reject

Scotland 00s

zen1 · 20/09/2019 19:18

Boff, swot and sad. Lots of disabilist words banded around as well, but they didn’t particularly refer to geekiness and were used as general insults.

BenWillbondsPants · 20/09/2019 19:33

Swot.

itssquidstella · 20/09/2019 19:34

Boff was our word. To be said in the most sneering tone possible (or written on a scrap of paper and put in my someone's bag for them to discover when they got home).

itssquidstella · 20/09/2019 19:35

This was late 90s/early noughties in Northants.

itssquidstella · 20/09/2019 19:36

Oh god @NameChange84 I'd forgotten about 'billy' :(

ALittleBitAlexis · 20/09/2019 19:38
