Are there any normal washing powders that are scent-free?

When I say "normal" I mean the big brands that anyone could buy in a supermarket. Are any of them scent-free? I've given up with all the so-called hypoallergenic stuff as it's full of other irritants, so I'm going to try a different way. I'll consider anything as long as it doesn't contain perfume, if such a product exists.

Simply pure is one we used to use. Recommended by the Eczema Society and has no perfume#

Boots do a sensitive powder - their own brand.

Old fashioned soap flakes? Bit of a faff but fragrance free.

I've tried liquid soap (the stuff made by Dri Pak) and it made me burn all over and also left a greasy residue on my clothes that too ages to remove.

What about those washing ball things? My dsis got me one and it worked pretty well for a while.

Ohyesiam · 19/09/2019 14:51

@tectonicplates
It does, what I was trying to say (and thought I had) is that it doesn’t irritate the skin of my very sensitive skinned family.
Just a suggestion.

LittleLostThing · 19/09/2019 14:54

After googling they’re called EcoEggs. There’s no washing powder in them at all, just the washing enzymes. It’s not great on properly mucky things like muddy football kit but it did the job for everyday washes.

Vinorosso74 · 19/09/2019 14:56

Another vote for Simply Pure. Surcare either.

Branleuse · 19/09/2019 15:04

Surcare

tectonicplates · 19/09/2019 15:08

I looked up the ingredients of Eco Eggs yesterday and the mineral pellets actually contain sodium bicarbonate, i.e. bicarbonate of soda. I've already tried washing my clothes in bicarbonate of soda several times and it made me itch all over and was a nightmare trying to wash it out. That's why I'm looking for some normal washing powder.

I've already used Surcare and it's awful and smells awful! That's why I'm looking for something "normal"!

Do you have 7th Generation there? It’s the only easily obtained truly fragrance free brand I can find. I have a fragrance allergy to even “unscented” products are off limits because they tend to contain masking ingredients.

haverhill · 19/09/2019 15:45

I watch a minimalist lady on YouTube who made a video about how most lightly soiled clothes get clean without any washing products at all, just a warm wash in the machine. You could try that.? I think she added a little essential oil to the final rinse but it’s not necessary.

Have you tried their ecover with nothing in. There's one in plain white packaging that has no perfumes or fragrances. I think it's ecover simple / ecover zero.
That one I think has to be ordered from them directly or Amazon though.

tectonicplates · 19/09/2019 16:20

I used Ecover Zero for several years but they changed their ingredients earlier this year. That's why I'm in this mess.

Ah right. That was a new discovery for me. Never mind then.

How frustrating. What did they do to it?

tectonicplates · 19/09/2019 16:28

I don't know exactly, but they've added something synthetic. Basically Ecover (and Method) were bought out by a big, corporate company called SC Johnson, so test on animals. I wish more people would realise that Ecover are no longer the ethical brand they used to be.

Persil Non Bio liquid works for me, am allergic to practically every other washing liquid/powder

tectonicplates · 19/09/2019 16:35

But it contains perfume.

This is an extreme suggestion if you can't get on with any washing powders at all: you could 1. Install a water softener (I think there are ones that rely on electricity rather than chemicals) and then 2. Get a toploader washing machine as they apparently don't clog up like front loaders and 3. Grate up some bog standard Simple/imitation Simple (usually called Pure) perfume-free soap and use some of that.

Or just handwash your underwear and hosiery using perfume and additive free soap. That does work surprisingly well.

(Well, I thought it might give you a few ideas if nothing else.)

Method make an unscented x8 concentrated laundry liquid called “free and clear”: we get it here in Australia but it doesn’t seem to come up for the UK.
If you don’t mind ordering from Amazon or iHerb, there’s a New Zealand company called Ecostore that make unscented products. A pp already mentioned Seventh Generation.
