Munich hotel recommendations

Can anyone help with a recommendation for a decent and affordable hotel in a nice area of Munich please? There are so many and I don't know the area at all.
Thanks!

Can you say which area it is you are looking at? Munich is very big! Also, when are you going as it is nearly Oktoberfest time and prices will be sky high (for anything that is still available!)

Givemestrengthorgin · 19/09/2019 16:20

@givememarmite that shows how much I know about Munich as i don't know the specific areas. Likely to be going in December for 3 nights so would like to be within a short walk of the main Christmas markets (Marienplatz?) But open to recommendations of any area/specific hotel that would make a good base for exploring. Thanks!

Hi OP, I live in Munich though I can't recommend hotels as such, you don't have to be in the immediate city centre to enjoy the markets, they are dotted all over the city and the public transport is so good you can get to them easily. You can download an app and get 3 day tickets to cover all travel all over the city. If you go on Muenchen.de they publish a map!

The city centre will be more expensive but you can be at Marienplatz in about 20 minutes from the suburbs, especially on the S-bahn.

The Marienplatz market is good but the food and Glühwein is more expensive. Another good market is Tollwood which is on the same site as Oktoberfest - it's lots of food and drink and the market stalls are a bit different.

Do shout if you want any more info!

Apologies for no paragraphs, I'm on the app!

Actually OP, have a look in the Nyphemburg area. Has a lovely palace and still close enough to the city centre by tram or S-bahn. Its towards the west of the city

givememarmite · 19/09/2019 16:51

Ah sorry it sounded like you were already looking at a specific area. You will find the most choice and reasonable prices around the main train station, but as in most cities this area is a bit of a mix, mostly very safe but a few dodgy parts so definitely double check exact location on tripadvisor.

Have a look at this hotel, they are usually pretty good value and it's within walking distance of Merianplatz etc

I work reasonably often in Munich & usually stay at Aloft Munich beside the main train station which is not super expensive and convenient. 5 mins walk to Marienplatz.

However.... if you are going only for Christmas markers, Munich is not a great city for it. Cologne, Nuremberg, Berlin, Frankfurt (& nearby Mainz & Wiesbaden) all significantly better at Christmas than Munich.

Catmar · 19/09/2019 17:37

Try motel one. I've used them in other German cities and they are really good.

We stayed at the Sofitel Bayerspost in March. Fantastic hotel with a lot of history - it used to be the old central post office and they have retained a lot of the original features. It is a short walk to Marienplatz and also beside the main train station, which is great for transport.

Givemestrengthorgin · 19/09/2019 23:20

Thank you all for your comments. I'm looking at booking Sofitel as can get a really good deal on that.

We will have 3 days and ideally would like to take a train trip out of town to somewhere where we can have a wander and get good views of the mountains...any recommendations for a day trip in December?

Also, any good recommendations for where to go for breakfast and good coffee? Going without the DC a leisurely breakfast is one of the things I'm looking forward to most! Thanks!

All I would say is avoid the area around the station. The one good hotel there is not cheap and the cheap ones are not good.

PeterthePainter · 20/09/2019 00:49

Breakfast/coffee (& beer!) try the cafe in the Old Botanic Gardens.

Spartak · 20/09/2019 01:07

Nuremberg is good for a day trip. Fab Christmas market, lots of history if that's your thing, and an easy journey by train. You can get a Bavaria region pass which is good value especially if there are two of you.

Muddlingalongalone · 20/09/2019 01:19

It's too long since I was in Munich to recommend hotels, but in terms of day trips pp is right Nurnburg is fab.
My other recommendations would be Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Neuschwanstein.

Givemestrengthorgin · 20/09/2019 07:33

Thanks all. @PeterthePainter the Sofitel where we were planning to stay is right at the station. Is this a bad area? The hotel itself looks lovely with a pool etc which would be nice but maybe we should reconsider.

Nuremberg looks great for a day trip!

We stayed at the Novotel München Arnulfpark for a similar trip. Very modern and well looked after. Fab breakfasts and a nice ground floor lounge area. Bedrooms felt quite like a good Premier Inn.

In term of getting around, if you are near an U-bahn station you can go anywhere. Public transport is easy and plentiful.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 20/09/2019 07:46

Another Munich person here! The area round the station isn’t great but it’s not actually dangerous. Just a bit seedy.

I second the Park Cafe as a lovely breakfast option.

If you’re coming in December you could use a Bayern-Ticket and visit Salzburg. You’ll get a lovely view of the Alps, plus the town is pretty and also has Christmas markets. Also reachable with the Bayern-Ticket: the small town of Kufstein, just over the border to Austria, which has a Christmas market in the fortress, and Chiemsee. Haven’t yet seen the Christmas market on the Fraueninsel but I’ve heard it’s lovely. And Nürnberg is always worth a visit, as is Regensburg.

lurker101 · 20/09/2019 08:08

Hi OP, other posters are correct that around the station is a little seedy, but only in the same way as other main stations are - think Kings Cross St Pancras or Paddington, rather than unsafe. We didn’t feel unsafe at all, and the hotel is super close and a nice walk to Marienplatz.

For good coffee and breakfast we loved Marys Coffee Club in Turkenstrasse area and Dallmayr

SeaRabbit · 20/09/2019 08:22

We stayed at the Hotel Admiral which was a nice family run hotel, with an excellent breakfast. It was not far from the river, within easy walking distance of the centre.

AChickenCalledDaal · 20/09/2019 11:25

DD1 is studying German and I really want to go back to Munich now!

Givemestrengthorgin · 20/09/2019 15:21

We've booked Sofitel as the deal was so good and it has a pool. Might not be the nicest immediate area but we are okay with that.

Thanks for the breakfast and day trip recommendations...all noted!

I came on to say the sofitel you've booked. I thought the area around it was fine, no different to the roads opposite King's Cross St Pancras. The pool is lovely there, but be warned that people go naked in the saunas- I didn't know this and got a very big shock!

jcurve · 20/09/2019 15:59

Honestly it’s absolutely fine around HbF in Munich. Gare du Nord and Brussels Midi (Eurostar terminals) are horrendous but Munich is absolutely fine. Like most German cities there is a homelessness problem (refugees), but I have really never felt unsafe and it’s a convenient location.

PeterthePainter · 20/09/2019 19:23

the Sofitel is where we stayed last time. It's good but not cheap (unless you can get a deal).

PeterthePainter · 20/09/2019 19:24

Oh and DW says the pool is one of the best!

Givemestrengthorgin · 20/09/2019 20:00

@PeterthePainter good to hear, thanks! I think we got a very good deal. Flights and 3 nights in the Sofitel for £250 each.
