What can I sit 4 month old who has outgrown bouncer in

My dd was born at and remains above 90th centile and at just over 4 months she is over the weight limit for her beloved bouncer.

We use it loads as she'll only tolerate lying down for short periods when awake, she likes to be more upright. I was going to get a bumbo seat but the OT at our children's centre advises against as apparently they limit the development of core muscles.

What other options are there? She can't really sit supported yet never mind unsupported, I've been propping her up on the settee but she keels over within about 30 seconds bless.

I still go with the bumbo but for short periods of time.

What about a high chair?

Lotsalotsagiggles · 18/09/2019 21:43

Baby bjorn

My baby would sit in it for hours and loved it

Takes a good weight too

gracepoolesrum · 18/09/2019 21:51

@Orchidflower1 are there high chairs suitable for babies who can't sit supported? I thought they were all for basically 6 months or so plus!

@Lotsalotsagiggles do you mean this one www.babybjorn.co.uk/baby-bouncers/bouncer-bliss/?attribute_pa_color=anthracite&attribute_pa_material=mesh

Yes it is v sturdy and the baby will just bounce a bit lower of a bit heavier

I used for my son and he used to watch tv in it, nap in it and was ideal as I could carry it into the kitchen and bathroom

Also took it on hol and to relatives houses etc

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 18/09/2019 21:58

Definitely the baby Bjorn one. DS is almost 6m, 98th centile and still in his

Celebelly · 18/09/2019 22:00

We have a Fisher Price sit-me-up chair and DD LOVED it. We took it all around the house and even when we were going visiting as she hated lying down and loved just sitting in it, watching what was going on around her. We don't use it now as she learned how to sit unsupported at about 5.5 months, but we certainly got our money's worth before then.

chocodrops · 18/09/2019 22:16

I am an OT! I put my DD (now 7mo) in a bumbo given as a hand me down from an OT colleague! Worked a dream from approx 4m - 6m when she outgrew it and could sit independently anyway.

Babies are generally not sitting independently at 4m as they have not got the core strength or control over those muscles. The bumbo effectively compensates for this and therefore puts them in an upright position which is great for social interaction.

Your OT isn't wrong, bumbo is not a straight replacement for a bouncer, but I don't agree it should be dismissed out of hand. Instead think of it as an activity chair for exploring sensory play, tabletop toys and first foods together. In this wasy it can 100% support your baby's cognitive and motor development.

If you can, find a bumbo to try first, you might find your chubby bubba is too big. Mamas and papas do an equivalent which is more roomy but offers less support.

Good luck, hope you find something that works for you.

It’s nearly time for the huge and ugly yet children love then jumperoo.
My ds adored it from 5mo till he walked at 11 mo.

mrsed1987 · 18/09/2019 22:28

Jumperoo. I got one on facebook which folds up. Called space saver. I got it for £30 pretty much brand new

RockyisMYRhino · 18/09/2019 22:35

I second a jumperoo think my DS was in one for a short while from about 4 months (although he did have a blanket down his back for a short while after he headbutted it)

Aaarrgghhh · 18/09/2019 22:37

You can get bouncers that do until like three years old. It’s fisher price and it turns into a toddler chair, we had one for my daughter and it was well used. It could also be laid down. I’ll find it and post a link here.

Blahblahblahnanana · 18/09/2019 22:39

This rocker looks good, you can use it up to toddler age too. My DD hated the bumbo.

On the third picture the bar at the front (I think) on the ground pulls out and makes it lay flatter while keeping it still. It was amazing and I’d buy it again if I have another baby. Also vibrates.

That’s the one.

TheVanguardSix · 18/09/2019 22:41

Yes to the jumperoo! It was my best buy ever!

Celebelly · 18/09/2019 22:41

This is what we had: www.amazon.co.uk/Fisher-Price-DJD81-Sit-Me-Up-Portable-Removable/dp/B014OCU7PW/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=sit+me+up&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1568842638&sr=8-4

One of our best purchases by far! I couldn't countenance spending a huge amount on something like that because a) babies are fickle and what they like one day, they might not the next and b) they grow out of stuff so quickly, and at 4mo she could be sitting on her own in the next six weeks potentially, so you won't get much use out of something expensive. We bought a Bumbo seat when she was about five months, she used it for a week, learned how to sit by herself and it hasn't been used since.

Mind you, my DD never cared for bouncers even as a teeny tiny baby, she wanted to be properly upright like the Queen, not reclined Grin

Celebelly · 18/09/2019 22:42

And defo get a jumperoo second hand. There's always loads for sale on FB marketplace because they are bloody massive and no one wants them in their house a second longer than they have to.

chocodrops · 18/09/2019 22:44

Just to say... jumperoo is not recommended till 6m (but I'd say look at your baby and decide) as they may not have the neck/trunk control to handle the bouncing, especially if they're no where near sitting.

LBOCS2 · 18/09/2019 22:45

YY - the 'circle of neglect', AKA the jumperoo. It's amazing for putting babies in so you can actually get on with other stuff - they love it! If your baby can't bounce themselves yet, I found putting some big hardback books under their feet was very effective 😁

Blahblahblahnanana · 18/09/2019 22:45

@Aaarrgghhh great minds! 😉

@gracepoolesrum I’d get a more sturdy infant to toddler rocker and a second hand jumperoo.

Blahblahblahnanana · 18/09/2019 22:48

circle of neglect 😂😂😂

Aaarrgghhh · 18/09/2019 22:55

circle of neglect

Brilliant lol. Our younger daughter had a jumperoo for a time, she also had to constantly wear a sats monitor, every time she jumped it would move the sensor on her toe and we’d run in if in another room to make sure she was okay lol. She loved it but my god did it make the monitor beep a lot.

Userzzzzz · 18/09/2019 22:56

I’ve never met a baby that didn’t like a jumperoo. 4m is probably a bit young though. Mine at that age was on a cycle between her bouncer, playmat, floor for tummy time. From 5m she was ok in our high chair and from 51/2 the jumperoo. You’re just in the tricky bit now where they want to be more interactive and do stuff but are still essentially useless.

TokenGinger · 18/09/2019 23:01

My DS is 3.5 months and is on the 99.6th percentile so outgrew his, too.

We bought him the jumperoo about 3 weeks ago and he loves it. It's perfect for him to sit and chill in or bounce in.

He also hates lying down.

TokenGinger · 18/09/2019 23:03

Whilst 4 months may seem young for the jumperoo, they have a weight limit. My DS is 8.5kg and the weight limit is 12kg so if we waited until 6 months when they say to use from, he'd be too heavy.

He's had his since 12 weeks and he's been great in it.
