does anyone else have, or had, a one year old with no teeth? my sister’s little boy has just turned one and he has no teeth and no signs of any coming any time soon. me and my sister can’t remember when our older children cut their teeth 🙈 so we’re just wondering if this is usual?

I don't think it's terribly usual but my dd was 14 months before she got her first tooth. I have loads of lovely gummy grinning pics of her as a baby/toddler.

MashedSpud · 18/09/2019 12:59

Is the child getting dairy/calcium?

PleaseGoogleIt · 18/09/2019 13:00

I have a 14 month old who only has her 2 bottom front teeth, no signs of any more on the way either. She got those 2 just before she turned 1.

I've read a bit online and it states that first teeth can come any time up to 18 months.

One of my cousins had no baby teeth till she was 2!
The dentist sent her for x-rays and they were all there just taking their time.
She had no health problems, it was just one of those weird things.

StarlingsInSummer · 18/09/2019 13:01

It's a bit unusual but not worrying yet. If I were your sister, I'd take him to the dentist, just for their input.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/09/2019 13:01

My eldest was 17 months. It was just moving from 'late but normal range' into 'refer for a check' category.

grandmasterstitch · 18/09/2019 13:05

It's not that unusual. I nannied twins and neither got teeth until 12 months. At least one of my NCT group had a baby with no teeth until about 14 months. I think at 18 months they X-ray to make sure they're there

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/09/2019 13:05

seems odd to me tbh

sleeveofstickers · 18/09/2019 13:13

My dd didn't get her first tooth until 13 months then quite a few in quick succession

nonmerci · 18/09/2019 13:16

Dairy/calcium has fuck all to do with it. Some children don’t cut their first tooth until they are two, I was told this by my HV. My DS is only just getting his first one now at ten and a half months and it’s coming through ever so slowly!

It’s not ‘usual’ per se but not unheard of.

sunshineandshowers21 · 18/09/2019 13:16

ah, thank you! it’s good to know there’s no need to worry just yet. my sister is naturally a bit of a worrier, so hopefully this will reassure her. he does look adorable with his gummy smile though. it’s been so long it’ll be weird to actually see him with teeth! 😂

My DS didn’t get his teeth until 11 months. He now has 8 (2 months later). His bottom teeth came in after the top ones and were just cutting through when I had dentists appointment so the dentist had a look in his mouth. He said that his bottom teeth have been delayed as they normally come through about 6 months but he wasn’t worried as you could see them starting to cut through. I’d ring the dentists and ask them for advice.

My eldest DD was 13 months. She was also very late in losing her baby teeth- 16 years old when her last molar fell out!

FizzyGreenWater · 18/09/2019 14:09

Two of mine were over a year too, only just though. Slightly unusual though not incredibly so. Apparently it's good news for the teeth.

They were then v late losing baby teeth too.

Coldishfeet · 18/09/2019 15:44

DD1 got her first tooth at 15 months. This had a knock on effect and she was the last of her pets to lose her baby teeth.

MattMagnolia · 18/09/2019 19:49

One of ours was 14 months. We realised later that her mouth and chin are very small so probably not space for her teeth to come through.

Yadid · 19/09/2019 03:21

I was the first one to reply with my dd being 14 months old - I'm saying that so you can follow what I've previously written. I myself, have 2 baby teeth left (my incisors). I'd just get a dentist to keep an eye that she loses all her baby teeth (when they decide to appear!). Other than that, all good I think.
DD has a beautiful set of teeth now (15).

The only drawback was that she had no teeth to chew on things, so getting her to eat anything that needed chewing (bless her) was difficult. Meat, like in a shepherd's pie or stew or something was difficult as she had no teeth! But I'd mash it up small for her so that she could 'chew' with her little gums.

It's not unheard of, but it is unusual.

Teddybear45 · 19/09/2019 03:25

Normal and preferable as this means the child is able to focus on other milestones. The pain of cutting teeth often delays talking / walking etc

crabb · 19/09/2019 03:48

DGD was 17 months when she got her first tooth. Don’t worry!

FuckFacePlatapus · 19/09/2019 04:55

My youngest got his 1st at 13 months, my other 2 around 6 months.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 19/09/2019 05:45

My sons upper front teeth were the first to arrive, a week before his first birthday. He hasn't lost them yet and he’s almost 8.

CrazyDuchess · 19/09/2019 07:11

Ditto with many others here- dd had no teeth on her first birthday but eventually came in soon after, and will probably be very slow losing her baby teeth too

stucknoue · 19/09/2019 07:13

My eldest was nearly one, she was 8 before she got her first adult teeth and 15 before she lost her final baby tooth, her dentist said it was unusual but not unheard of

FrancesFlute · 19/09/2019 07:17

Similar to as others have said - it is perhaps a bit unusual, but not at all unheard of. One NCT friend's daughter was 19 months when she got her first tooth. They had taken her to dentist for xrays which showed they were there which put their minds at rest.

TheApprentice · 19/09/2019 07:32

We are all late teethers in my family. My brother was 2 before he cut any teeth! This meant that he didnt lose his milk teeth till much later than usual too. But no harm done. Hes got a set of very nice teeth now!
