19 weeks pregnant baby still no movement - second baby

greendolly · 16/09/2019 12:17

It's my second baby and 12 week scan report says placenta is posterior.

Can this be normal? 20 weeks scan is in a few days and I'm worried something awful has happened.

Yes it is totally normal. I’m am now 35 weeks with my second and I was in the same boat. I know I felt my first move a lot earlier than this one, as my husband felt the first baby kick the evening before our 20 week scan, and I know I’d been feeling her for a week or two beforehand. So when I was at the same point with this one and hadn’t felt much I was convinced something bad had happened. All was confirmed as perfectly fine at the scan though, this baby is just lazy! She moves plenty now, although has always been more of a wriggle/roll type movement than the out and out kicking I got from my eldest.

TixieLix · 16/09/2019 12:27

Neither of my two DDs were big movers, the first one particularly. I used to prod my stomach at night to try and make her move as I was always convinced the baby had died (didn't help that I had a MM for my first pregnancy). Neither baby was big - DD1 6lb3oz and DD2 6lb8oz - so not sure if their size had anything to do with it, or if they were just lazy.

I keep trying to think when I got movement in my first pregnancy but honestly cannot remember.

I'd probably give the midwife a call and see what she suggests.

Both mine went quiet and I was sent for scans. Everything was ok but it's a good idea to get your midwife's opinion.

greendolly · 16/09/2019 13:16

@horsemad wouldn't she just advise me to wait until 20 week scan though? It's later this week.

OP posts:
Horsemad · 16/09/2019 13:18

I don't know but I'd still call and ask what she thinks. 🙂

bengalcat · 16/09/2019 13:20

Ring your midwife or day assessment unit - either can have a listen in and or scan to find the heartbeat and reassure you . It’s
Not unusual to have not felt movement but the fact is you’re concerned so need reassurance .

TinyMystery · 16/09/2019 13:21

Your midwife might offer to listen in for reassurance if she’s kind but it’s very normal not to feel movement even up to 24-25 weeks. Your placenta may be at the front so masking the movements a bit.

mawof3soontobe · 16/09/2019 13:21

If you're concerned they would invite you up to the assessment unit today where they would pop you on a monitor for a while to take a trace of babies heart rate

MyPatronusIsAnOrca · 16/09/2019 13:25

If you’re worried, give your midwife a call just for your own peace of mind.

However I do remember I felt movements with my second a lot later than I thought I would have.

I realised for me it was because I was busy with my toddler etc that unlike my first pregnancy I wasn’t hyper aware of every movement/twinge etc as I didn’t have the time etc to indulge this pregnancy as much, if that makes sense.

PrincessScarlett · 16/09/2019 13:29

Please give your midwife a ring. She'll be able to reassure you or make an appointment to check the heartbeat.

TinyMystery · 16/09/2019 13:57

They won’t do a CTG trace on you at 19 weeks. It would be of no value and you would not get consistent contact.

greendolly · 16/09/2019 16:21

@tinymystery that's what I was thinking. I do understand people saying to call the midwife but in my area that usually means you leave a message and then get a call back within 48 hours. Unless I call triage but that feels like a total overreaction.

Marlena1 · 16/09/2019 16:27

Totally normal. I could feel my first moving a lot at this stage and got extremely worried on my second as I felt nothing. It was the position of the placenta that shielded the kicks.

Marlena1 · 16/09/2019 16:29

Ps I was so concerned that I went to hospital and they checked the heartbeat. This might be an option.

Tweetingmagpie · 16/09/2019 16:32

It’s different with each pregnancy, this is my 7th baby and I’ve only just felt movements a couple of days ago and I’m 20 weeks tomorrow, my others were all between 14 and 18 weeks.

Tweetingmagpie · 16/09/2019 16:33

Have you not had your 16 week appointment yet where they listen to the heartbeat? That reassured me as I had mine a bit late at 18 weeks and hadn’t felt anything yet so hearing the heartbeat made me feel better.

greendolly · 16/09/2019 16:39

@tweetingmagpie unfortunately they don't do heartbeat at 16 week appointment in my area Sad

I'd worry less if placenta was at the front but according to 12 week scan report it's at the back.

OP posts:
Tweetingmagpie · 16/09/2019 16:49

They dont listen on the Doppler? That’s weird they’ve always done it at mine, I didn’t know it varies by area.

I would really try not to worry, it’s not late to not have felt movements yet. If there’s no other symptoms like pain or bleeding then I honestly would t worry about it.

If you have a scan soon then that will put your mind at rest, you could always call triage and ask them for their advice, they won’t mind if you’re worried.

Tweetingmagpie · 16/09/2019 16:49

Mines at the back too x

greendolly · 16/09/2019 16:56

@tweetingmagpie yes it's strange isn't it how much it can vary by area.

The midwife said the rationale for not listening to the heartbeat at 16 weeks is that in a minority of cases it is a bit too early to hear it which then creates lots of stress and worry when actually everything is ok.

Thanks for reassuring. I just wanted to hear if it's unique or happened to others too.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 16/09/2019 17:01

Are you sure the placenta is posterior? I asked where it was at my 12 week scan and sonographer said is so early that they don't like to say as there is so much change and growth it might move.

I'm the same as you op. 19 weeks at nothing I am certain is movement. Maybe a flutter but I'm convinced it's gas ☺

greendolly · 16/09/2019 17:26

@iamnotacerealkiller yes I'm sure it's posterior, I made a point of asking (placenta was low until 34 weeks last time so wanted to know all about it this time!) and also had private scan at 9 weeks and she said it was posterior then too.

OP posts:
nonmerci · 16/09/2019 17:35

They won’t do a CTG at 19 weeks. I had one at 28 weeks with DS and even at that stage it was difficult, he kept moving away from the Doppler.

In all likelihood it will be fine but contact your midwife for some extra reassurance. If the scans have all been ok and heartbeat was heard at the 16 week appointment it’s unlikely anything is wrong. Missed miscarriages are extremely rare in the second trimester.

greendolly · 16/09/2019 20:03

I think it must be different in my area. I don't have an assigned midwife, at the clinics you never see the same person twice and there's no direct line to actually speak to somebody. I could leave a message but by the time somebody gets back to me it will nearly be time for my 20 week scan anyway.

You also don't get to hear heartbeat at 16 week appointment in my area either.
