12 year old dd and period pain

Poor love is suffering. She can't swallow tablets, I've given her a dose of 3-12 Nurofen. Can I give her Calpol as well and when?

Tried hot water bottle, she says it doesn't help. Is it true exercise can help relieve it? She has a dance class later but may not feel like going.

@twosoups1972

How old is dd ? Yes she can have calpol too.

With the dance class. Yes it can help and I don’t think it would be enough of a reason to miss. Maybe just a word with the teacher so she is aware if dd would’t object.

twosoups1972 · 15/09/2019 11:40

Thanks, can I give calpol at the same time? Or wait?

Yes at the same time.

Jbraise · 15/09/2019 11:43

@twosoups1972
Forget the age question . I am a teacher and would also advise writing your dd a note for tomorrow.

Spam88 · 15/09/2019 11:50

You can get Nurofen Melts (or meltlets or something like that) which just dissolve in your mouth - might be a good option instead of liquid nurofen as she could take them to school with her.

Inebriati · 15/09/2019 11:54

Ibuprofen and paracetamol are safe to take together, but I had the same problem as your DD and they didn't touch it. She may need co-codamol or paracodol, but they are large tablets. I find it easier to take them if I eat a spoonful of yogurt first, then swallow them with yoghurt instead of a drink.
She might also benefit from going on the pill.

luluskiptotheloo · 15/09/2019 11:59

My dd uses a wheat germ bag when at home which helps her. You can
buy cura heat pads for period pain which my dd uses. They are like the ones for back pain. She says they help.

youarenotkiddingme · 15/09/2019 11:59

You can get dissolvable co codamol.

twosoups1972 · 15/09/2019 12:13

Can you get co-codamol over the counter?

@twosoups1972

I don’t think you can . Hope my advice helps.

chandlersagirl · 15/09/2019 12:39

You can get very low dose cocodamol over the counter in a pharmacy yes, 8/500mg , and you can get in soluble form .

Can also get feminax ultra which is naproxen , so next step up from nurofen, but that’s not liquid, tablets are about the same size as smarties .

SweetPetrichor · 15/09/2019 12:41

Go for dissolvable pain relief and encourage her to get up and active. I find the pain horrendous when sitting or lying around but it is less painful when up and moving.

FaithInfinity · 15/09/2019 12:48

Yes you can get the lowest dose co-codamol OTC in dispersible form. I have endometriosis and only codeine helps me (but I can’t take anti-inflammatories). Try alternating the paracetamol and brufen rather than giving them at the same time. Co-codamol contains paracetamol so don’t gave that with calpol though. I find deep heat patches help when I’m out and about, a wheat bag helps better than a hot water water (adjustable shape). Hope she feels better soon.

123bananas · 15/09/2019 12:53

Co-codamol is for 16+ only because codeine is metabolised differently by different people and in children this has led to them receiving too much opioid and it depresses respiratory drive and heart rate so not safe. Some gentle walking along with paracetamol and ibuprofen might help ease the pain.

NeverSayFreelance · 15/09/2019 12:58

Maybe take her to the docs and see if they can get a prescription strength painkiller? I got naproxen on prescription because OTC wasn't strong enough.

Also try your best to get her to swallow tablets. I was the same at 12 so I get it but the kind of medication you need to fight period pain is mostly swallowed.

Likethebattle · 15/09/2019 13:20

Feminax ultra over the counter is naproxen (they told me I couldn’t get naproxen over the counter for back pain 🙄) I feel for her I used to be in horrendous pain. The pain would make me throw up with severity do tablets were useless. Going on the pill at 14 was the most amazing thing for me, no pain ever and I could ‘time’ the breakthrough bleeding around my life. I used to take three packs back to back as you don’t actually need to have the break. Holidays, festivals, days out....I could just continue the pill to avoid having a period.

Breathlessness · 15/09/2019 13:23

She’s 12, so she doesn’t need to have Calpol. She can have tablets.

Breathlessness · 15/09/2019 13:27

Ignore me, I’m an idiot.

One thing that helped when I was a teenager (as well as a shit load of drugs) was elevating my legs. I used to lie flat on my bed and have them up on a bean bag.

MrMeSeeks · 15/09/2019 13:27

Theres also co-dyramol 12/500 ( codeine) i don't know if it comes in dispensable form though.

youarenotkiddingme · 15/09/2019 13:33

Yes. Dissolvable co comdamol can be bought OTC. My ds takes it for muscular pain.

GummyGoddess · 15/09/2019 13:51

I used to find stretching helps more than exercise? First stretching out the lower back on hands and knees and then doing cobra position. Still needed hot water bottle and painkillers but it was more bearable.

KnittingSister · 15/09/2019 14:01

I find exercise first thing in the morning helps, relaxes me for the rest of the day. No exercise in the morning and I'm a wreck half way through the morning.
Also, get her to practise taking tablets with tic tacs. Being able to take tablets is a valuable life skill.

MrsJoshNavidi · 15/09/2019 14:03

It was back in the dark days of the 70s, but my DM used to give me gin Grin
Alcohol is a muscle relaxant and it really used to help.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 15/09/2019 14:41

Poor girl. How much pain is she is? If someone made me exercise when I had period pain, I'd tell them where to go, but I feel like I'm in labour at times, it's so bad. I'd let her decide herself at that age if she's well enough to attend her dance lesson after she's had some calpol also.

CrotchetyQuaver · 15/09/2019 15:43

Alka seltzer was the best thing I ever found for period pains and feeling a bit queasy. Not great tasting but you only need a small amount of water to dissolve the tablets in.
