How Many Steps Do You Do a Day?

strawberrisc · 14/09/2019 23:53

I thought I did a lot just in my normal day to day business until I got a cheap fitbit!

I set mine for 10,000 and make sure I do them every day which is easy at weekends but harder in the week as my job is busy but can leave me chained in one place during the day. I've added in walks before and after work to hit the target.

It's made me wonder how many people try to average in a day.

Depends on the day it’s very varied but I average 10,000 a day. Some days it’s more like 5,000 and others it’s more like 20,000 though.

goodwinter · 15/09/2019 00:05

Average around 9000, but varies massively depending if I'm WFH, or walking into the office, or how long I walk the dog for, etc.

StayInYourLaneBoy · 15/09/2019 00:08

My average day is only about 5000 - 6000. Not enough, I know

Titsywoo · 15/09/2019 00:11

No idea and I find everyone's obsession with it a bit weird.

TowerRingInferno · 15/09/2019 08:04

22, 000 average

More on weekdays, less at weekends

At least one long dog walk a day, exercise classes, lots of gardening and cleaning.

RoseMartha · 15/09/2019 08:22

Work days struggle to get 10k usually averages to 9k

Non work days usually around 14-15k

I also try and get at least 30 mins active a day which is harder on work days. But on non work days can be anything from 30-120 minutes.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/09/2019 08:29

I do about 15-16000 a day (average) but I very rarely get less than 10k. I don't even think I'm particularly active, although I do run 5x a week which adds a few, and 2 school runs a day. The rest are just pottering about at home

MustardScreams · 15/09/2019 08:31

Depends on the day. If I’m taking dd to nursery and then going to work it can easily be 25,000.

On the days dd is at my parents it’s more like 10,000.

picklemepopcorn · 15/09/2019 08:31

Only about 2000.
I have Fibro, and have been tracking it to try and increase. I can do 5000 but it leaves me very tired. Over 6000 and it takes days to recover.

BeckyButters · 15/09/2019 08:31

@CendrillonSings is that up or down?

Chocolatecake12 · 15/09/2019 08:32

I have a Fitbit and try to do 10,000 a day but weekends I fall really short - usually about 6,000 and some days I only manage 8-9,000. I’m seriously going to try and get to my target though and try and shift some lbs!

LittleMachine · 15/09/2019 10:07

About 12000-15000 on a work day - that’s all in work as I drive my commute. I teach very young children all with ASC. It’s an active job. At the weekend it’s more like 7000.

strawberrisc · 15/09/2019 10:10

Thanks everyone. I didn't get the obsession in the staffroom of people constantly looking at their wrists and comparing steps with each other but it's honestly one of my best purchases. I assumed I was doing way more in a day than I was. I'm not so bothered about the 'step count' it just made me look at how inactive I was and it was getting worse. Now I'm mindful just to move more than I was before and I feel better for it, plus my sleep has massively improved.

Can't you tell how much exercise you've done on a day without asking your watch?

I walk the dog, I walk to and from work where I sit on my arse (nature of the job). I walk around the supermarket. I walk up and down the 78 steps to my flat several times a day. I swim every day.

I feel crappy if I miss a swim or don't get the dog out. I was recently sofa-bound after a minor car accident, I know I haven't got 10,000 without something bleeping at me.

Verily1 · 15/09/2019 10:31

2-3000

Sedentary job, long commute, too tired in morning/ evening to exercise.

More like 5000 at the weekend- shopping/ short walk.

If I get to 10000 I’m exhausted and sore!

fussychica · 15/09/2019 10:33

I've cant get my head around how someone does 20,000 on a daily basis, that's 14 kms!

I think I'm fairly active but would rarely manage even 10k despite zumba, daily walk into town, gardening and housework. Even when I worked I doubt I would have managed it on a daily basis.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 15/09/2019 10:39

I get around 12k monday to Friday and a lot less at the weekend (think I only did 2k yesterday. Today will probably be about 6k)

Passthecherrycoke · 15/09/2019 10:41

Like you OP no problem hitting 10-15k out of work but during my office based job often hit 4000 unless ive done a specific exercise

@elQuintoConyo of course you don’t know how many steps you’ve done without a counting device? Confused

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/09/2019 10:42

Fussy it's not 14km though. Think how tiny a stride is when you're doing things around the house, or climbing the stairs, or waiting for a bus. You don't 'walk' every step you take. For me a 20k steps day will probably include a run, maybe a fitness class, 2 school runs, and then the rest would be housework, or if I went into town or something like that. The worst days are if I have someone round or go to someone's for several hours- just those few hours of inactivity really put a dent in my step counts.

Passthecherrycoke · 15/09/2019 10:45

Agreed @thenewaveragebear1983. A long drive and a visit to family is the worst here

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 15/09/2019 10:45

I average 12.378 steps per day!
I also do 2x Pilates and
1x yoga per week. 6 weeks ago I stopped drinking wine (but I still have a few ~to many~ beers on a Saturday). No booze during the week at all. I’ve not dropped a pound!!
I am sleeping like a champion though!!

SunshineAngel · 15/09/2019 10:49

@Titsywoo Why? I think it's great. It gives you an idea of how active you really are, in comparison to how active you should be. If your friends also have fitbits, you can do challenges to see who can do the most steps. Me and my partner are in challenge groups every week, and sometimes at the weekends or after work we even say come on, let's go to the park, our steps are a bit low today. It's just fun, gets people active, and considering the number of people dying young from lifestyle related illnesses, I don't know why anyone would think it weird, or a bad thing.

itssquidstella · 15/09/2019 10:50

When I'm working it's around 12,000, excluding what I do at the gym.

During the holidays it can be less but still usually around 9,000 plus whatever I do at the gym.

eeksville · 15/09/2019 10:52

These threads always bring up the posters that claim to have done 5000 steps just getting the kids ready for school in the morning!

It's about 15-20 mins to walk a mile there is no way I walk 2.5 miles around my house in the morning.
