Will dds curls come back if I get her hair cut?

My Dd (3) is desperate for her first hair cut, just a trim I think.

She has lovely ringlets and I’m worried they won’t come back 😩

Do they grow back?!

My DD has gorgeous curly hair as a toddler. We had it cut and it's been poker straight ever since..she's now 13.
DS was the same.
I still mourn the curls.

Knitclubchatter · 14/09/2019 18:23

hair grows from the roots, so trimming the curly ends may mean the loss of the baby curls but with less weight the hair may curl up more.
you will eventually have to trim off the dry brittle ends, sorry no definitive answer.
it can go either way :(

My son's curls never came back.

My older son had toddler curls that never came back after his first haircut. But you could tell that the newer hair nearer the scalp was straight, so not a surprise. My younger one has very curly hair and has maintained the curls after the first cut. The person who cut his hair told us that hair can change over time and may straighten out or get curlier, just like sometimes it lightens or darkens over time. You could tell she’d been blamed for cutting off curls that never came back in the past (she just cuts curly hair). I was sad to see DS1’s curls go, but I do have to say that straight hair is much easier to maintain than curly hair. DS2’s hair is lovely but a lot of work.

My daughter is 3 too and has kept her curls.

user1493494961 · 14/09/2019 18:41

I don't think they will.

squiglet111 · 14/09/2019 18:51

My son had georgeous curly hair when he was young. I got it cut when he was 4 as it started to grow straight, and it's been straight since 😢

Teddybear45 · 14/09/2019 18:58

Your dd’s curls look dry and brittle and so it’s probably curly through damage. Cutting off the damaged ends will make the hair healthier - whether it’s still curly after that or not doesn’t matter.

Darksideofthemoon19 · 14/09/2019 19:08

I know her hair is dry, but she’s just turned 3 and Iv tried to stay away from products in it.

She’s always had curly had and her dad has curly hair so I assumed hers would stay curly. I’m actually really dreading having it done, I think that’s why I’m holding off 😩😭

The top of her hair is straight so maybe not. But I cut off my DS's toddler curls when his hair looked like your DD's and now his hair has matured it's curly again. His dad has very curly hair.

WhoWants2Know · 14/09/2019 19:38

My DD's stayed curly, much to her dismay.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 14/09/2019 19:52

My dd has spiral curls, I cut it and it's now poker straight. She's now 7

TokyoSushi · 14/09/2019 19:54

My DDs is still wavy but the spiral curls didn't come back

Soola · 14/09/2019 19:56

If you cut her hair and it loses the curl then at that age you can tear off strips from fabric/old clothing such as a t shirt and make rag rollers/curlers which are safe for her to sleep in and give a lovely natural curly look when removed.

MidnightMystery · 14/09/2019 20:00

Yeah they will I think!

Daddylonglegs1965 · 14/09/2019 20:05

Could go either way. Your daughters hair is lovely. Lots of sites for curly hair curly girl etc that recommend products suitable for children with curly hair which might help worth a try.

Ginger1982 · 14/09/2019 20:06

I got my DSS curls at the back cut off when he was 18 months and they never came back. His hair then went through a straight phase before becoming very wavy. So although he has no curls, his hair is still wild!

Nat6999 · 14/09/2019 20:09

Ds hair was curly when he was small but then turned straight when he had it cut short. He is 15 now & has grown his hair to below his shoulders, it is now curly again.

TweezerMay · 14/09/2019 20:09

Aww, those pics remind me of my DD. Same colour and curls 😍 DD’s never had hers cut so it’s got less curly as it’s got longer and she’s 5 now so it’s quite long. It does look like your DD has straightish hair from the roots so I would say they might not come back. Fingers crossed though, they’re so cute.

Soubriquet · 14/09/2019 20:12

No... my dd had gorgeous curls. All gone now

I had the same when I was a toddler. Mum cut them and bye bye curls

BoomZahramay · 14/09/2019 20:12

I don't know but obviously, you can't fight the inevitable.

You can wait, though. I waited until just before my DD started school precisely because I wasn't ready to say goodbye to her curls.

bert3400 · 14/09/2019 20:18

Don't do it, my son had the most beautiful blond locks , when he was 3 he had to have it cut as we were living in a hot climate, and it was never the same.

StillMedusa · 14/09/2019 20:18

My DS2 went the other way... poker straight as a toddler... then at 10 he hit early (ish) puberty and it went corkscrew!!! Now keeps it short but for his early teens he had long almost afro hair! So you can't tell how it will develop :)

Fatted · 14/09/2019 20:22

The curl looks like it's growing out to me.

DS1 had curly hair as a baby and by about 3 it grew in straight. We had his cut regularly from a year old anyway.

DS2 had curly hair as a baby and he's still got it now at 4. We keep it pretty short otherwise it just looks tatty. I'm naturally curly so one of them was bound to have it.

BogglesGoggles · 14/09/2019 20:25

My sons hair was very similar. Straight on top beautiful right ringlets on the bottom. They didn’t come back after we cut them off but his hair has never been longer than collar length so maybe that influenced it.
