There is a pigeon in my garden at the moment that I'm sure has a broken wing.

Is there anyone I can ring that will come out and help him?

As a side note someone would have to come out and get him as I'm absolutely terrified of birds and pigeons being my main fear

Well done OP that's a heartwarming tale and boo hiss tonthe RSPCA

Treenymph · 12/09/2019 22:10

Rspca are a waste of space best bet is a small rescue centre if you can catch it put it in a deep box in the dark with some water pigeons will die from shock when stressed if it lives til morning your vet may know of a rescue centre.

Fens eh?, wouldnt be the Ramsey raptor centre or the good old Wood green home at Godmanchester?..

Agree re the RSPCA what do they do these days?.

Pigeon1234 · 13/09/2019 02:02

If you are in mainland Britain Google Rpra royal pigeon racing association if it has a ring on its leg and u can get close enough to read the number give this number to the Rpra and they will tell u who owns it along with their address and phone number
It will likely have a yellow ring on saying GB 19....meaning great Britain 2019 followed by a number eg 30743 this is a unique number registered to its owner
I hope this helps

Pigeon1234 · 13/09/2019 02:12

Ps there is some rubbish being spoke here pigeons are very hardy birds be during world war had a leg shot of and it's breast ripped open by German gunfire and still made it home to the south of England with vital information that saved the lives of hundreds of allied soldiers put out a bowl of water and some soup mix it will rehydrate and probably head for home soon
Pigeons are intelligent hardy animals and certainly not fly rats as some ignorant people call them the have won over 100 Dickens medals the equivalent to the Victoria cross for animals and saved thousands of lives

FamilyOfAliens · 13/09/2019 08:14

@Pigeon1234

Are you the pigeon? Grin

AwkwardPaws27 · 13/09/2019 11:15

Just to note - local RSPCA hospitals are separate to the main national RSPCA service. Please don't let this put you off helping your local hospital.

The national service get so many cases, they have to prioritise serious abuse and neglect cases over injured wildlife (sadly).

I'm glad you found a local wildlife rescue for your pigeon.

Luluzz · 13/09/2019 11:49

I'm really glad you got sorted op. But let the dog out? Is that a joke...? If you're going to euthanize a bird yourself, look online and pull its neck or find someone who will. Do not 'let the dog out', what a stupid suggestion. Or are we all in support of hunting with dogs? No? Because it's brutal, slow, painful and unnecessary? Have the gumption to do it yourself or just don't.

spiderlight · 13/09/2019 12:03

Glad you found someone to rescue Percy. Are they going to update you on how he gets on? He's basically the official Mumsnet pigeon now and we need to know!

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 13/09/2019 19:39

Just an update for anyone is interested in percy. I rang the centre earlier and percy did as I suspected have a broken wing. They fixed him up and he made it through the night. He is going to stay with the centre until he is strong enough to be released into the wild. Last night I started out terrified of pigeons and now I seem to have developed a relationship with one Grin

Thank you for saving his life, and for the update!

Frith2013 · 13/09/2019 20:10

@Luluzz yes, I’m very much in favour and enjoy hunting with dogs, thank you.

And ferrets.

pumkinspicetime · 13/09/2019 20:14

Just want to point out that rats are intelligent and hardy animals too, known to help weaker rats in their group in times of need.
We have so many rats because of the mess humans make.

Glad the pigeon is doing well.

LoseLooseLucy · 13/09/2019 20:20

Good to hear Percy is on the mend, well done for saving him OP 🐦
