Quick advice needed please on a pigeon

There is a pigeon in my garden at the moment that I'm sure has a broken wing.

Is there anyone I can ring that will come out and help him?

As a side note someone would have to come out and get him as I'm absolutely terrified of birds and pigeons being my main fear

@Frith2013 I totally get where your coming from the dog is a rottie so it will be a very quick death he has unfortunately killed a couple of birds before and he literally grabbed it shook it and left it on the grass (it all unfolded before my eyes too quickly for me to stop it from happening)

I’m glad I haven’t horrified you too much - most youngsters round here have worked as “beaters” on shoots and go ferreting etc so I have a bit of a practical view!

You could call Folly Wildlife Rescue for advice. They're based in Kent so don't cover your area but they may be able to refer you to someone near you. And they will be able to advise you how to catch the pigeon without distressing it, what food to give etc. Folly do a LOT of work with injured (or orphaned) wild birds and they do everything they possibly can to help. Shame you're not in Kent as they even have a wildlife ambulance they send out to collect casualties.

www.follywildliferescue.org.uk/

Their helpline number is 01892 543213 and they're open 8am-7pm. I'm not sure what happens if you call out of hours. I know they still have staff in the hospital so you may still be able to get advice.

This might help OP - Cambridgeshire wildlife rescue don’t seem to be taking birds at the moment but provide this link:

If you are rural do you know anyone with a gun? Even an air rifle would do. Or anyone who is proficient in the wringing of necks?

FamilyOfAliens · 12/09/2019 19:05

DD found an injured pigeon outside her student halls in West London a couple of years ago.

She googled a rescue and took the pigeon in a box, on the bus, an hour away to the house of one of the rescue’s volunteers.

DD is fab Smile

DontCallMeShitley · 12/09/2019 19:11

Google Wildlife Rescues, some of them will go out, some won't.

There are groups on Facebook that help, this one is good and members go and help if possible www.facebook.com/groups/PigeonProtection/?ref=bookmarks

@SandunesAndRainclouds thankyou so much for your link. There was a place on that list that is only 30 mins away from me, that take pigeons, I rang them and they have a volunteer that lives a couple of streets away from me so she is on her way round the rescue percy and take him to the centre

Great news, well done. We have something similar here and I keep their details on my phone.
Bet that's a relief!

LoseLooseLucy · 12/09/2019 19:18

Aww brilliant OP ☺

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 12/09/2019 19:20

@Socksontheradiator it's such a relief. I feel like even if he doesnt survive the journey or when he gets there he isnt well enough I have done everything I can to help him. Also the added bonus that the lovely volunteer will come over and catch him for me

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 12/09/2019 19:37

Just an update for everyone, percy is now in his way to the wildlife centre. The lovely volunteer came round caught him no problem (apparently she had experience with catching pigeons) she has now taken him away in her car and she is convinced that he will make a full recovery Smile

@WhenEnoughIsEnough oh I’m so pleased! That’s great news, so glad it was helpful. I grew up in the fens, so just googled my old home town and wildlife rescue which got me there. That’s made me smile!

rosinavera · 12/09/2019 19:45

Aw, what a lovely update OP - you've restored my faith in humans!! xx

Egghead68 · 12/09/2019 19:45

Great news!

LoseLooseLucy · 12/09/2019 19:48

Love that update 🐦 👍

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 12/09/2019 19:53

Aw, so glad it's a happy ending for a change, well done @WhenEnoughIsEnough Star

JessicaPeach · 12/09/2019 19:54

That's brilliant news op. The rspca will now absolutely hound you to make a donation, I called them once about a hedgehog in our garden and even though they didn't come out (had to do as you've done and find an alternative) as they had my details they rang me twice or 3 times a day every day for a few weeks after, it was ridiculous and really turned me off ever donating to them.

AmIAWeed · 12/09/2019 19:57

Yay - this makes me so happy. Well done on helping Percy. Whatever happens now you know you've given him the best chance

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 12/09/2019 19:58

In so glad that everyone is as happy as I am with Percy's update. @JessicaPeachI will not be giving the RSPCA a penny after the service and advice of yeah well just let it die. The centre who have taken him on the other hand will be getting a good donation on pay day

BlankTimes · 12/09/2019 20:27

What a lovely thing you did OP, I hope Percy makes a full recovery. Flowers

I live very rurally. One vet has an agreement with a wildlife sanctuary. If anyone finds an injured bird or animal, they take it straight to that vet who will treat it and then the volunteers from the wildlife sanctuary will come and collect it when it's in a stable condition and nurse it back to health so it can be released back into the wild.

AlexaAmbidextra · 12/09/2019 20:33

The only time I have ever known the RSPCA do something is when they have a TV camera on them. They are fucking useless.

pottedshrimps · 12/09/2019 20:49

Like most of the big charities, the RSPCA exist solely to raise large amounts of money and that's their main focus. Any piddling amounts of actual animal work they might do is just a front to justify their fundraising. The govt needs to address this issue.

Hope the pigeon makes a recovery.

annemcdonald · 12/09/2019 21:26

Please try & help it. Could you put this post on Facebook? Maybe one of your neighbours could help?
