What makes you feel cosy?

(Inspired by the wonderful cosy books thread in What We're Reading)
So the nights are drawing in and our thoughts are turning to woolly jumpers and evenings by the fire, hot drinks, pyjamas and candles. I have some trusty old favourites that help me feel cosy at this time of year;

Smells: glade spiced apple cinnamon & nutmeg candle/plug in; yankee maple syrup candle; pumpkin scented candles if I can find them. I would love to find a similarly comforting burner oil but haven't so far!

Food: stews, especially Irish or beef;
mashed swede; parsnips

Drink: Starbucks pumpkin spice latte with cream, I had my first of the season this week and it was like a hug in a mug

Tv: Frasier - I can't imagine it ever being warm and sunny in Seattle! Love the episodes where they stay in log cabins and all the scenes in Cafe Nervosa;
Friends when they're wearing chenille and Joey has his big jumpers on;
Call The Midwife

Films: disregarding Christmas movies because for me these are strictly December viewing only - pretty much any black and white film, but I'll say Rebecca or Mr Smith Goes to Washington;
I'm really looking forward to seeing the Downton Abbey film next week, I'm going to book reclining seats and take a blanket

Music: this is the category I'm struggling with. Apart from Christmas tunes it's hard to think of cosy music but so far in my 'Cosy' playlist I have Norah Jones Don't Know Why, John Mayer Who Says and my favourite so far, Iron and Wine Each Coming Night. I would love some suggestions for this category as I'm sure there are lots I've forgotten!

What helps you get cosy and enter hibernation mode? Smile

Aw - I love that little house burner!!
Mine are: walks in the local national trust woods wrapped up and in our wellies.
Fur throws and brushed cotton bedding on our beds
Agree pumpkin spiced or berry candles
Cozy Sunday pub lunches in our local with the log fire burning
Watching miss marple/sex in the city re-runs or a cozy movie such as ‘you got mail’ or ‘sleepless in Seattle’
Going to Dublin for a boozy weekend in October, staying in a lovely hotel and having lots of lovely food and drink whilst there. We always go to Bewleys for lunch and Wilde for a treat and I always visit Avoca to buy some lovely Accessories and bits n bobs. I think Dublin and New York are lovely in autumn.

Whitejasmine · 12/09/2019 20:02

Oh and books: anything by Agatha Christie, Judy Blume, Barbra comyns or Elin Hildebrand. I’m currently reading ‘dark matter’ which is creepy but cosy in a funny way as I’m wrapped up warm in bed whilst poor old Jack is stuck in the Arctic with a ghost!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 12/09/2019 20:19

Blankets. I have one at work, and many at home. My favourite is one DP's ex bought me. She got it because she knows I like cats, and it's covered in them, I don't think she realised my love of blankets. But it's so soft and warm and cosy I'm under it all the time when I'm on the sofa, unless it's really too hot.

If my cat's curled up next to me and I have a warm mug of something then I'm in heaven.

nearlynermal · 12/09/2019 20:44

Reading these I'm so glad I'm adopting two kittens as my Christmas present to myself!

Gas fire, sofa, GBBO, soft dressing gown, tidy kitchen, dishwasher and washing machine whirring in the background.

JMAngel1 · 12/09/2019 21:03

I am in heaven reading this!
Love that blog link - the playlist and bucket list are perfect!

nearlynermal · 12/09/2019 22:15

@AwdBovril major domestic goddess points for the Christmas cake!

SeaSaltandLime · 12/09/2019 22:45

For me it's;
The darker, cold, crisp mornings and evenings.

A nice cup of mulled wine or slow cooker hot chocolate.

Coming in from the cold to the heating on, having a hot bath and putting on comfy pyjamas or loungewear.

My mulled wine plug ins, it's my absolute favourite winter scent. I bought my first one today and it smells gorgeous. Reminds me of my DM.

Braised steak, boiled/mash potatoes and warm bread.

Getting the fire going.

Dressing gowns.

Waking up the heating clicking on and having a cup of tea, while sitting in the living room before everyone gets up. The house is usually just at the right temperature.

Low lights and candles burning.

Wearing my big coat!

I absolutely love autumn/winter. Cannot wait for bonfire night, Halloween, Christmas. It's my favourite time of the year. Brew

Egghead68 · 12/09/2019 22:46

Hot chocolate too.

SeaSaltandLime · 12/09/2019 22:49

Oh also;

Getting the autumn 'decor' out. Today I've put away most of the garden/outdoor/summer stuff and have gotten out blankets, cushions, bedding, big mugs, autumn/winter candles, my autumn wreath.. all the bits like that.

I cannot wait to get the Christmas decorations out. Sitting in the living room at nighttime, with the lights twinkling away, fire burning, under a cosy blanket with a cup of something hot.

Ahhh I'm so excited.

Babdoc · 12/09/2019 22:52

Logs crackling on the open hearth, warm lamplight, cat curled up beside me on the sofa, a good book, a plate of home made lamb, roots and barley casserole, and a glass of wine. And feeling pleasantly knackered after a lovely crisp walk round the loch or through the forest, with all the autumn colours on the trees.

PointlessUsername · 12/09/2019 22:53

That feeling where you just open your eyes in the morning and it's just so warm and snug in bed.
Pyjamas.
Hot chocolate.
A glass of wine.
Vanilla candles.
Christmas tree lights.
Hood up when it's cold and wet.
Kit Kat dipped in coffee.
Cuddles off the children.
Pillow under my feet when lying on the couch.
Dark nights.
When the cat sits on my chest for some affection.
Slippers.
Bare feet in bed with quilt tucked under.
Hangover lie-ins.(body relaxed but mind on overdrive).

Raaaaaah · 12/09/2019 23:05

I save all the cubs/beavers/Brownies badges to sew on the uniforms in autumn. I can’t wait for the crown to start too. Wool blankets, wool slippers, wool jumpers...all the wool. Making a log pile in the log shed.

Leftielefterson · 12/09/2019 23:11

Candles
Cuddling on the sofa underneath soft blankets
Full bodied red wine and cheese boards
Open fire
Curtains drawn
Stews/pies

Poetryinaction · 12/09/2019 23:17

Nothing.
I am claustrophobic and hate wearing lots of layers, scarves etc. I hate the constant hum of central heating and fires make me feel like I can't breathe!
I am always too hot in other people's houses and they are too cold in mine.
What makes me feel comfortable is fresh air, open windows, proper light so I can see.

tutu112 · 13/09/2019 01:59

What a lovely thread - was dreading winter but now I'm thinking about all the nice bits. Here's how my autumn is going to look in my head:
Wearing - soft fluffy socks and fleecy pjs. OHs thick snuggly dressing gown. Very dark red nail varnish on hands and toes channeling my inner Uma Thurman. Maybe with a hair and face pack on too, seeing as it's going to be too rainy or cold or dark to go out. Unshaven legs! Thick opaque tights boots and denim skirts , wooly cream chenille jumper and hats and gloves if I ever leave the house.
Perfume - mary Greenwell plum or Jessica Simpson fancy nights. Just smell like autumn to me. Or maybe one of those perfumes that smell like a smoky fire.
Watching - chocolat on DVD. Love that opening scene of them battling the snow in their gorgeous cloaks. And the wind blowing about makes me feel all warm indoors. That old " mellow fruitfulness" CBeebies autumn song. Always puts me in a good autumn mood.
Plugged in - my iPad with a nice long lead. My kindle with loads of charge and some good reads lined up on it. my heated furry blanket or maybe a hot water bottle instead. Fairy lights everywhere I can get to. Battery powered candles on timer so I can doze and not stress about burning the house down.
Eating - hot buttered toast. Sweet potato jacket spuds stuffed with feta cumin and coriander. And marshmallow s'mores.
Listening to - Take 5 (jazz) or similar. Maybe some Fleetwood Mac.
In the oven - cupcakes. Flapjacks. And homemade bread rolls. Minestrone Soup or mince tatties and dumplings or maybe haggis pie cooking on the hob.
Wallowing in - mud on long walks in wellies taking photos of the trees and the colours of the leaves with the family and then a deep bath afterwards.
I'm quite looking forward to it now!

My two dogs lying in front of the inglenook with the fire blazing

My cosy country cottage, I cannot wait to get the Christmas decorations up

Snuggling on the sofa with my DH covered in a beautiful soft throw watching horror movies drinking lovely full bodied red wine drank from beautiful wine glasses with gooey blue veined cheese and crackers and chutney

Stylish but cosy loungewear and lovely cashmere socks

Chunky knits, sweaters and cardigans

Classical music on while I’m cooking a (veggie) roast in the kitchen

My kitchen pot hanger covered in twinkle fairy lights

Going for long dog walks in the woods with DH, getting our wellies, hats and gloves on, on sunny, crisp days, heaven!

Beautiful lamps

My fragrance burner, with neroli oil

Lots of candles

Long Sunday lunches at the pub with the dogs, we have the most hygge local, there are lots of open fires, beams and lots of dogs everywhere, the food is very good too, there is even a big fire pit in the middle of the restaurant part, it’s a wonderful place to lose a few hours

MarshaBradyo · 13/09/2019 06:14

I love this time of year, the start of each season is always nice anyway

Summer is great but I always feel ready for autumn

Just being inside with radio on and warm with warm lighting is nice

MarshaBradyo · 13/09/2019 06:15

And a big scarf and shearling lined boots outside

nachosTrafficante · 13/09/2019 07:25

Woodburner on.....I’m resisting as we’re moving and I shouldn’t be ordering more wood...

ChristineBaskets · 13/09/2019 10:35

So many lovely things here, thank you all for helping me look forward to Autumn! And what a wonderful insight into your lives, I've been enjoying picturing you all knitting and crocheting with your dogs and cats by open fires, walking in woods and around lochs and sitting in your cosy local pubs.

The little log cabin is adorable and I've added it to my 'want' board on Pinterest Smile

I still have fresh air in the autumn @Poetryinaction ! Lovely being outside when it's crisp and slightly chilly. The light is amazing.

And our windows are open year round - can't bear hot houses with stale air. Much better now than a couple of months ago when it was so hot it was claustrophobic!

I agree with everyone about proper autumn food - beef stew and mash and red cabbage, red wine (I go right off rose the minute the weather turns), putting on jumpers and cashmere socks in bed.

I go running and it's very satisfying to head out and it's freezing but keep running until you're just right in temp. Running in the heat of July was no fun.

Also love closing the curtains and making hotties for everyone and tucking up the DC with blankets. So satisfying!

lazylinguist · 13/09/2019 10:49

Fire, fluffy socks, knitting
