Anyone up,... just had an unexpected visitor in my hotel room

Someone just walked into my hotel room. Apparently the connecting door I presumed was locked really wasn't. Also apparently 12.30am is a perfectly reasonable time for someone in the next room to start trying to open random doors. FFS where did he think it went?

I'm not entirely sure of the etiquette in such matters but I told him to fuck off. I may also have been a tad grumpy with the night manager who I suggested might want to secure my room.

Of course now I can't sleep. Sighs.

Was staying in a London hotel last year and had gone to bed about 10.30 after a long day travelling over and sightseeing with DD. Forgot to put the dead bolt on. . Something I usually always do. Only to be woken after 11 by a couple letting themselves in!
Hotel had sold the room twice.

We were furious and my daughter pretty frightened.
Hotel offered us vouchers for a coffee each the next morning!

mindgoinground12 · 11/09/2019 02:53

You'd think they cleaners would check them before hand! I assume that the occupants before needs then open.

And I'm on a night shift!! Really wish I was in bed. NOT a night owl

Sweetaholic · 11/09/2019 03:00

I've stayed in loads of hotels over the past couple of years and always check the doors and cupboards in my rooms. He checked the door to be nosey and was probably surprised to see you. Make a complaint in the morning and by email. It's not acceptable you could have been robbed or worse.

Lol, woops

livelaughcheese · 11/09/2019 03:54

Is it enough to check it's locked or do you also have to check if it's locked from your side? And how can you tell if it's locked from your side?!

MutedUser · 11/09/2019 04:21

Maybe he was sound asleep woke up in the night and tried the first door thinking it was a toilet . Really not the poor blokes fault he probably got a fright as you did. Totally the responsibility of the hotel.

Rtmhwales · 11/09/2019 04:36

I've had slightly worse. Checked into the hotel assigned before my cruise. Was listening to funny Facebook videos on my phone in the bath with headphones on, looked up with utter surprise and horror to see bathroom door open and a woman standing in the doorway.

Turns out hotel had somehow accidentally put us both in the same room in their system. She definitely got an eyeful. And we ended up on the same cruise too, so that was awkward. We're Facebook friends now though so it all worked out.

MutedUser · 11/09/2019 04:38

Rtmh guess nothing breaks the ice like full frontal nudity .

LuckyLou7 · 11/09/2019 04:43

I'm a reluctant night owl, working the night shift, can't wait to get home to my bed!

I hope you've managed to get some sleep, OP
I'm sure your night time visitor thought he was opening a cupboard and not sneaking into your room!

Jesaminecollins · 11/09/2019 05:23

That is bad - you should never be put in adjoining rooms with a door unless you have booked them with a family member or close friend. I would be asking for a full refund and to be moved to a room without a door leading into the next room.

IceCreamBrain · 11/09/2019 05:25

I can't believe you complained to the hotel about it, surely it's really easy to just check as soon as you arrive. I think this is on you personally for not bothering to lock your door before you go to bed.

SpamChaudFroid · 11/09/2019 05:58

Maybe it leads to Narnia! I know!!

I've been woken up by a screaming man outside, he does this at least once a fortnight. My street seems to be like catnip for the shouters/screamers. We even have a preacher, he walks up and down the street shouting about eternal damnation. His voice does have a nice mellow timbre tbf. Unlike the early hours shouter, who sounds like a tantrumming toddler.

Now I'm wondering is there any point going back to bed. Looking at detached properties in cumbria on Rightmove usually soothes me.

AnalUnicorn · 11/09/2019 05:59

Jesaminecollins - it’s standard practice for hotels to assign rooms with connecting doors to guests who are not in the same group. Normally the doors are locked so no issue.

Personally I hate them though so always request a room without connecting doors.

CupoTeap · 11/09/2019 06:17

Sounds like the start of a romcom

SunshineCake · 11/09/2019 06:21

It really doesn't Hmm.

smemorata · 11/09/2019 06:31

Ughhhh those doors are the most ridiculous invention! Who even uses them?!

Families with children who don't fit into one room! I think they're a great invention. Should obviously have been locked though - hope you managed to get some sleep OP!

sashh · 11/09/2019 06:37

Morning all, the coffee pot is on and the tea pot is warming. I have some nice granary bread for toast.

AlwaysCheddar · 11/09/2019 06:55

The person was probably just checking it was locked, and was surprised to find it open. But equally, why the fuck would you not check it was locked when you got there. That’s stupid

stucknoue · 11/09/2019 07:02

It's just an oversight, the cleaner should check between guests but I always check myself. I suspect the other person opened the door thinking it was the bathroom at that time.

Yoohoo16 · 11/09/2019 07:06

Me and dh had this on our honeymoon. A guy walked into our room (we were napping) and instead of being like oh I’m so sorry, he just stood and stared. Weird.

BeepBeeeep · 11/09/2019 07:06

Lovely @sashh
Can I have coffee thanks. I've got some home made strawberry jam for the toast.

Herocomplex · 11/09/2019 07:09

If I stay in an hotel I check all the doors and windows. Always lock the door. My husband thinks I’m overly fussy, but it does bother me.

sashh · 11/09/2019 07:14

Coffee and toast being pouted and squashed through the key board as I speak. I have some hazelnut coffee syrup id anyone wants some.

pelirocco123 · 11/09/2019 07:17

Every time I have stayed in an interconnecting room there have been two doors and you can only unlock the door facing your room

BeyondMyWits · 11/09/2019 07:31

Stayed in a Holiday inn recently, the duty manager had to unlock both doors with a key. If it was that sort of setup I guess the previous guests had the doors open and the DM didn't lock after they checked out.
