Will we need to give our first dog up?

This may be a bit long so please bear with me.

We got our first dog last January. We put a lot of research into it and I read three books as I'd never had a dog before (DH had lots though). We've spent a lot of time trying to train our dog. Unfortunately she still tries to run away when she can get out the gate (if I leave it open by accident or she manages to open it) and is a LOT faster than us. She also barks like mad when people come in or leave the house and having a guest is nearly impossible because m, despite trying everything, she doesn't stop barking. She's definitely strong and sometimes nips. We can't leave the room if she's in with DC (for the loo) and I don't let her near DC2 (4mo) as she's just too temperamental. We had this dog from puppy for context and bought her.

This is where it gets harder. We rescued two puppies two two weeks ago, for various reasons. They've been very good and easy enough to train but they're small dogs so maybe that's why. Dog no1 can't be in the same room as them as she attacks them, every time.

I don't know what the solution is at this point. It's not fair to give dog no1 away but I don't know what else we can do? She's not safe around the kids or other dogs and I have failed training her to be calmer and not to bark so much and to not run away. What do I do?

Both pups to a reputable rescue, they will get good homes and get a well recommended behaviourist for dog one.
Admit you’re an idiot who had good intentions but will sort it now 🙄🙄

Soola · 10/09/2019 19:56

@LilyandAnnie90 I’ve reported that post for you. Completely irrelevant to the thread and trying to bait you.

Your comments were about the op and the dogs and relevant to the thread. Rise above the idiot.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 10/09/2019 19:58

Both pups to a reputable rescue

Yep this is the only fair solution for these 2 pups. They will find a new home and then you can concentrate on properly training and caring for Dog 1.

Training a dog takes time. We’re still training with our nearly 1 year old. I’d suggest you get a very good trainer.

LilyandAnnie90 · 10/09/2019 19:58

@Soola thank you! I’ve also reported.

and for gods sake, dont get anymore dogs

Span1elsRock · 10/09/2019 20:01

Jesus wept, what sort of idiot thought of mating a jack russell with a springer spaniel?

I've got 2 spaniels OP - a cocker and a sprocker. They are both horribly anxious, neurotic, need endless mental stimulation and lots of exercise. Not for the faint hearted or can't be arsed brigade.

You've got to commit to training, it's ongoing and never stops. Sort out the puppies going to a good rescue, and get someone in to help you with the 1st dog.

@Bookworm4 stop trying to derail the thread by bringing up a different thread! That’s why your post has been reported!

@Bookworm4 if you have an issue, raise it on the thread you’re referring to. Don’t come on other threads I’ve posted on in order to derail them. You won’t push me out you know.

Raphael34 · 10/09/2019 20:05

You’ve had the first dog from a pup, so if it bolts, barks and bites that means you’ve completely failed as an owner. The dogs not temperamental, it’s been brought up wrong. Now you’ve thrown 2 more dogs into the mix, you’ll bring those up too. You’ve already ruined the first dog. Don’t create 2 more problems and ultimately have to get rid of all of them and make someone else try and sort out these lives you’ve messed up. Find an experienced home for the first dog and give the pups to a rescue who’ll give them to someone who’ll look after them properly

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 10/09/2019 20:07

You've got 3 dogs? Wow.

The puppies aren't trained- it's been two weeks. They will be easy to rehome though as they're tiny.

madcatladyforever · 10/09/2019 20:07

Good luck with three dogs and young children, I cannot imagine anything worse. Are you insane?
I am speechless.

DawgLover · 10/09/2019 20:11

Rehome the two pups, you've taken on quite a bit more than you can chew and you really won't have trained them at all.

It sounds like your original dog needs better boundaries, focus and impulse control. Contact your vet for advice on local behavioral therapists and junior dog classes.

If you aren't willing to do the above its probably best to rehome all three to someone who can put in the time and work.

Raphael34 · 10/09/2019 20:12

If your children truly come first then rehome all the dogs with better owners and focus on your children

LilyandAnnie90 · 10/09/2019 20:15

See that OP. Everyone else is judging you too! 😂😂 because whatever you think of my opinion on a different thread, your thread is about you and your behaviour has been awful!!!

Please dont listen to what @whirlwinds says. Pack theory was debunked decades ago. Using punishments to control dogs is bad for too many reasons to mention.

Soubriquet · 10/09/2019 20:20

Be aware (if it hasn’t been mentioned already) by getting two puppies together, they could suffer from littermate syndrome

pintoffginplz · 10/09/2019 20:22

Jesus op that poor dog, what the hell were you thinking getting the 2 puppies?
Absolutely gobsmacked at how stupid you've been AngryAngry

FenellaMaxwell · 10/09/2019 20:23

To be perfectly honest it doesn’t sound like you are cut out for dog ownership at all right now. I suggest you rehome all 3 dogs, and don’t get another one until your children are owner, you have more common sense, and you choose a less high needs breed.
