DH wants your help in choosing a weekend destination

Hi all, DH has just whatsapped me asking me to ask Mumsnet for help. It’s weird how dependent they become when they don’t even use it.

Anyway, he’s going away for a break with a friend. They are looking for a UK destination, up to 3 hours from London, somewhere interesting, chilled, a “cool” vibe. They will have a drink but aren’t big drinkers, happier to mooch around, spend time in some sort of hipster pub, have a look at a market, perhaps go to the cinema etc. DH loves countryside and scenery so perhaps not a city.

I think him and his mate are both struggling with organising a non romantic break! Any help is welcome x

York?

AnnaMagnani · 10/09/2019 10:20

Cambridge? Has market, wander round colleges, some pubs are hipsterish.

elQuintoConyo · 10/09/2019 10:22

Lincoln. Has all that, plus a castle and cathedral.

Get them to take a photo of themselves after they've just walked up Steep Hill Grin

I was going to suggest Bristol, stay in Clifton by The Down's, lovely and green, can walk into Clifton Village for drinks/food. Everyman Cinema on Whiteladies Road.
Lots of hipster-ish pubs.

Kirkby Lonsdale - Euston to oxenholme

Bruton in Somerset has become very hipster in the last few year. Surrounding countryside is gorgeous.

Canterbury, has lots of history, places to eat and drink and if it's not enough you can get the train/bus to the coast for a mooch..

FASDE1517 · 10/09/2019 11:11

Canterbury, Broadstairs / Margate, Whitstable

LesLavandes · 10/09/2019 11:17

Brighton is fun

BertrandRussell · 10/09/2019 11:20

Actually, Margate is a good shout. Much more interesting than Whitstable. And more interesting places to eat.

SilverySurfer · 10/09/2019 11:22

How about Helmsley in Yorkshire, lovely scenery nearby, Rievaulx Abbey is worth a visit, nice shops and pubs: www.visithelmsley.co.uk/

Littlepond · 10/09/2019 11:24

Canterbury!

BertrandRussell · 10/09/2019 11:27

It’s weird. I go to Canterbury all the time and I’ve sort of forgotten that it’s interesting and historic. To me it’s the nearest Lakeland, bookshop and clothes shops.

GummiberryJuice · 10/09/2019 11:41

Belfast

AnnaMagnani · 10/09/2019 12:07

Belfast is amazing.

NoNewsisGood · 10/09/2019 12:11

Sheffield - and then book someone to take them out into the Peak District for some climbing, walking, cycling, other sport thing that they either enjoy or wouldn't usually do. There's then decent enough night life there too for a hot meal and a drink but not too busy as cities go.
