Where to get relatively decent curtains without spending much?

I'm decorating the dining room to get it ready to put on the market. (Currently it's bright pink! But am painting it white to remove personality.)

The old curtains are past it.

So, I need some curtains. I only really need them for the photos and showing people round, so I don't want to spend a fortune. (I may leave them in the house but I imagine the new people will replace anyway).

Does anyone know of any curtain sales? What kind of curtains would you choose to appeal to most people?

I was thinking possibly something light to keep the room light and airy, but perhaps I need something bright if the walls will be white?

The room has wooden floors, wooden dining table and sideboard and black piano. The furniture is 1930s (like the house) and a slightly orangey wood, no idea what to call it! It's a bay window.

Thanks :)

Try Wilkinson's, The Range or Dunelm for reasonably priced curtains if you want to buy in person.

Terry's Fabrics are good for online purchases. Otherwise try eBay, gumtree or FB for bargains.

Dunelm

CactusAndCacti · 09/09/2019 20:37

Charity shops. Just take in the measurements and be prepared to compromise.

randomsabreuse · 09/09/2019 20:40

Just bought some blackouts from Dunelm for DD4s room. They are decent enough although they didn't have all the colours in pencil pleat.

Do you need "curtains" or would a light voile do - assuming you need to justify the curtain pole/dress the room rather than for privacy reasons- Dunelm had loads of voiles when I needed blackout!

itchyfinger · 09/09/2019 20:42

Dunelm - blackouts are great

fiveleftfeet · 09/09/2019 20:42

I don't have an IKEA near me sadly Envy

Try gumtree or market place on facebook

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 09/09/2019 20:44

I was in an IKEA yesterday and there was a huge selection of curtains. There were also endless signs about shopping online.

PickAChew · 09/09/2019 20:46

Dunelm. They always have some good reductions and the quality isn't bad at all.

Floralnomad · 09/09/2019 20:47

Julian Charles they do lovely curtains and bedding at reasonable prices .

lostonadustyrock · 09/09/2019 20:49

Dunelm has been my saviour a few times now for curtains. B&Q used to do some lovely ones, though its about ten years since I bought from there so that could have changed a lot.

Ooh, do IKEA do proper online now? Last I looked they had a very limited range and massive delivery fees but to be fair this was years ago I think!

Off to have a look

Primark or Dunelm?

RavenLG · 09/09/2019 20:55

Free cycle / Gumtree / Free and Sale sites on Facebook. Cuts down costs and waste too.

fiveleftfeet · 09/09/2019 20:56

Oh, hang on a minute. I have a massive spanner drip feed, sorry.

All of the Ikea curtains are eyelet ones as far as I can see.

But, the curtains in that room are those fiddly plastic paperclip-ish things. What are they called? (Pretty ugly!!) Are they too old fashioned now? Am I going to need a new curtain rail too?

The walls are so hard in this house. It's unbelievably difficult to drill into them.

Off to look at Dunhelm...

You will struggle a little, we have them in our bedroom (moved in last year) and I did struggle to find some, but I did get some from Dunelm.

(Look for pencil pleat)

VanGoghsDog · 09/09/2019 21:03

You can get curtains for old fashioned curtain rails, I prefer them personally but I have poles in all my rooms and cba to change them for the old runners.

The clips are fiddly but you need those with rings on poles as well anyway.

Not all the Ikea ones are eyelet, they have tab top and the ones you need, here's an example which can be track or pole: www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/torgerd-room-darkening-curtains-1-pair-blue-green-70421672/

VanGoghsDog · 09/09/2019 21:05

These ones also do track or pole and would look nice in a white room:

fiveleftfeet · 09/09/2019 21:07

Track! Is that the word I need to search for them?

Are they called "track curtains"?

Good news they still exist.

I had no idea I was so clueless about curtains till now!

Dunelm.

Best quality I have seen at a low price. We have loads of them

CactusAndCacti · 09/09/2019 21:08

Dunelm is more likely to be pencil pleat
