Why do some people write in capital letters

Just that really. Shopping lists, birthday cards, post-it messages always in capital letters when its quicker to do joined-up

Maybe it's quicker for THEM 🤷‍♀️

EmilyStar · 08/09/2019 16:35

Maybe they’re worried no one will be able to read their handwriting if it’s not in capitals?

Proudpeacock · 08/09/2019 16:37

DH's handwriting is so awful that capitals at least stand a chance of being legible. I can manage his writing after 20 years and generally being quite good with poor handwriting but others struggle.

coconuttelegraph · 08/09/2019 16:37

My writing isn't very neat so easier to read if in capitals. I'm surprised that anyone would have a view on how other people write their shopping lists

EskewedBeef · 08/09/2019 16:37

Duff handwriting.

SwedishEdith · 08/09/2019 16:38

I assume they must have bad handwriting/were never taught how to write properly. Or think it's to show something is important. But I do find it harder to read and, for me, it definitely takes longer to write in capitals.

birdlawyer · 08/09/2019 16:39

WHY NOT?

WanderingMind · 08/09/2019 16:42

I know at least two ladies in their 80s who had to leave school at a young age to look after younger siblings so they only write in upper case because their handwriting is illegible using lower case.

How does their writing style impact on your life? Confused

DesMartinsPetCat · 08/09/2019 16:48

My dad writes in all caps. He was taken out of school aged 9 to take over running the family farm when his father left- someone had to work the farm to try and support the other 6 children in the family.

I assume he writes on all caps because they hadn’t learned to do joined-up writing by the time he’d left school. Also, as a left-handed child, his left hand was tied behind his back and he was forced to write with his right hand.

Anyway, my dad isn’t particularly literate but he went on to set-up two very successful businesses and become a multi-millionaire.

Still, I’ll let him know that a woman on the internet doesn’t like how he writes.

Tink1990 · 08/09/2019 16:49

Because they want to -shrugs-

ErrolTheDragon · 08/09/2019 16:51

Maybe it's easier to read if you're long sighted and don't want to faff with reading glasses when you're out?

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 08/09/2019 16:51

ITS CLEARER

Or theirs maths teachers. It was remarkably common when i was in training for maths teachers to use capitals where everyone else used cursive

PatricksRum · 08/09/2019 16:58

The reasons above.

Also lots of forms ask for block caps so perhaps they're used to it.

Knittedfairies · 08/09/2019 16:58

My dad always wrote in capital letters, but that's what he had to do at work filling in forms. It came as quite a surprise to me that he could actually do 'joined-up' writing.

Crochetymum · 08/09/2019 17:11

Yep mine is neater if it's in capitals. Unless it's a letter you're writing I don't think it matters. Sometimes I struggle to read what I've written in my own writing if it's not in capitals, it can be that bad. My own shopping lists, orders I'm doing on computer at work etc are done in capitals, if I'm writing notes to a teacher at school or similar then I do my very best handwriting 😂. Not everyone has neat writing. I'm sure I read somewhere that the scruffier your writing the cleverer you are 🤣, I'm hanging on to that when someone says "what's that supposed to say?!"

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 08/09/2019 17:13

Better Than People Who Write Like This

Crochetymum · 08/09/2019 17:14

@DesMartinsPetCat
I love your response.
My nan had very scruffy writing and hers was because of the left handed rule.

Trinpy · 08/09/2019 17:18

A friend of mine always writes in capitals because he never learnt to do joined up writing at school.

elephantoverthehill · 08/09/2019 17:22

Maybe it's because they are technical type people, capitals are always used on 'blue prints'.

janj2301 · 08/09/2019 17:29

My husband was an expat kid in Africa. Went to many different "mud hut" schools. Never taught to write cursive plus very dyslexic, only uses capitals and they aren't really legible. Thank God for "Word" .

ourkidmolly · 08/09/2019 17:29

God op is just asking a question. Crazily defensive replies.

Ilovewillow · 08/09/2019 17:38

My husband always writes in capitals - it is more legible that way and he's pretty quick too! I imagine lots of people do for the reasons already stated but we always joke my husband should've been a doctor his handwriting is so bad - he chose law instead! My son prefers capitals as he finds it easier to form them but he's left handed and only 6 so it will be interesting to see if this continues!

Gramgram · 08/09/2019 17:44

DD was most upset when my DF, her grandfather sent her a text in block capitals, because she said he was shouting at her. However he was having difficulties seeing the screen on his mobile. Once the dust had settled down, we used block capitals to send text messages to him, so he could read them and were fine about his replies in capital letters. He would also write in birthday cards in the same fashion and us to him.

DF was in his eighties and now no longer with us but I've kept some of his text messages and cards. He used capital letters simply so he could see what he had written and appreciated that we did the same.

sonjadog · 08/09/2019 17:50

Some people here get defensive really fast!

In my experience it has to do with illegible hand-writing.

MsAwesomeDragon · 08/09/2019 17:53

DH writes in capitals because he thinks it's easier to read in his handwriting. He's wrong, but won't be told. I can't see the shape of the word of it's in capitals, so him writing me a shopping list in capitals makes it harder for me to read, but still he won't be told that. So he continues to write in capitals and his normal handwriting gets worse because he's not using it.
