How often do you mow your lawn?

Got a bit of a telling off at my rental inspection because the garden is a little overgrown. It's not a jungle, but the lawn could definitely do with a mow. I don't have anywhere to keep a lawnmower. I sometimes have a go with a handheld strimmer but it's a bloody ridiculous task. I also work, am starting a full time masters, am a single parent etc so would rather pay somebody to do this if not too expensive.

There is a gardener who comes and does next door's garden every other week. Was going to ask them if they would mind mowing my lawn. It's very small, maybe 5x10 metres. Does anyone know roughly how much they would charge for this, considering they don't need to travel? Obviously I'll ask him but I wondered if anybody had a rough idea.

I want to ask him to come over regularly to keep it neat. But I have absolutely no idea how often I'll need it done (never had a garden before). I was thinking monthly from now until March. And then every other week between March and September. Is that about right? How often do you/ your DH or whatever cut yours?

You could get away with 2 x weekly in the growing months. At a push 3 x weekly.

Ours needs doing every week really, but when we had someone doing it, they did it fortnightly.
It won’t need doing at all from October. Smile

nicslackey · 07/09/2019 14:37

Every two weeks but it could probably go to 3 at a push. I did it weekly when I did it to make it easier but getting someone in was the best decision. No constantly watching the weather and doing it after work when i was too tired etc!! Gardener usually stops October until March btw.

PullingMySocksUp · 07/09/2019 14:37

Oh and charge, I’d be thinking £20 a go.

StayInYourLaneBoy · 07/09/2019 14:41

I have a gardener cuts my grass, he comes once a fortnight during the decent weather but doesn't cone at all during the winter (and grass rarely grows much then anyway). Basically when the council cone to empty the garden waste is pretty much also gardener season. I have a big garden and pay £15 but I live in the North East

RainOrSun · 07/09/2019 14:42

I probably stop cutting some point in October, and start again March time.

I think you'd get away with every 2 weeks over the summer - it might ge looking a bit long in July time, but would be ok.

My understanding is the landlord should provide a lawnmower if they want you to maintain the garden.

YaySeptember · 07/09/2019 14:43

We do ours once a month. Yes it gets fairly (but not overly) long in between but that gives the clover, dandelions and daisies a chance to grow and provide food for bees and butterflies and other insects.

WindsweptEgret · 07/09/2019 14:46

I do mine weekly, or fortnightly if I don't have time or it's raining when I do. I stop over winter around October to March like RainOrSun.

Bluntness100 · 07/09/2019 14:50

Generally it's about fifteen quid an hour, so I'd say he will charge you a full hour and likely charge you 15/20 quid.

Are you sure you can't store a lawnmower someplace? If money is tight that's the best option, half an hour a couple of times a month during the summer and it's done.

chickenyhead · 07/09/2019 14:54

When I cant see the kids in it anymore. But seriously, not often and last time my landlord came it was half done half knee high. Life sometimes doesn't leave time for it.

A strummer doesn't take up much space. But to be honest, if you are expected to mow the lawn he should provide a mower.

CoolLikeOvie · 07/09/2019 15:02

Feel pretty thick that I had no idea grass hardly grew for half the year Blush good for my bank balance though! Means I can just get him to do it once in the next couple of weeks and then not have to worry till March. Great news Grin

I don't have any tall cupboards iyswim, just have to keep my mop in the bathroom and my hoover in the upstairs hallway. I could clear out a kitchen cupboard - just had a look online at small lawnmowers but hard to really gauge their size, and if the top bit folds or whatever. But I think I'll ask the guy to do it as a one off, and then I can go to B&Q or whatever early next year and weigh up my options.

Thanks everyone Smile

The grass will still grow until December if it’s warm enough here in the South East. Neighbour pays £40 for two hours gardening every other week.

BlackCatSleeping · 07/09/2019 15:22

I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s a rental inspection so they are probably just looking for anything to flag. Mines a bit overgrown at the moment as it always seems to rain on my day off. Just do it when you can as long as it’s not knee high or anything.

Megan2018 · 07/09/2019 15:31

DH is obsessed with the lawns, he does them at least weekly, sometimes twice a week in Summer. But we have free range chickens and their poo makes the grass grow like a bugger!

When I lived on my own with a small lawn I got away with every 3-4 weeks. I now rent my old house out and my expectations from tenants are to keep it reasonable, so monthly more than adequate to keep on top of it.

JapaneseBirdPainting · 07/09/2019 15:46

There;s an OP on here withy anthread about how her DH cuts it just before they go on holiday. :)

Seriously though- once a week in summer- once every month or so November-February. I do a bit of eyeballing to judge it.

topsagain · 07/09/2019 15:51

Look into seeding some clover into the lawn. Less mowing, less (other weeds) I've only just discovered this.

They want me to sort it, then book a reinspection! Really annoying as they take months and months to sort out any issues I have. And when I moved in, half the grass was dead due to their trampoline so I sowed some grass seeds, repainted the awful, peeling fence etc. so I personally think it looks better than the state they gave it to me in.

I weeded a few weeks ago and did a bit of strimming with the handheld thing, it's not exactly uniform but my DD isn't losing her toys in the grass or anything! I think I'll just book a gardener so they can reinspect and then worry about maintenance in the New Year.

That's what made me think to ask you all my question! Grin

I don't know what's wrong with me today. I meant every two weeks or 3 at a push.

CarolineKate · 07/09/2019 16:37

Every 2 weeks with it looking not so good the day of it needing done 🤣

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 07/09/2019 16:42

I do ours twice a week in summer, and maybe once a fortnight until early December

Ireland: Rains a lot, makes the grass grow

Itstheprinciple · 07/09/2019 16:54

The gardener cuts ours once a fortnight. I don't do it in between. Not at all after mid-October until Spring.

Elieza · 07/09/2019 19:00

I wrote on the calendar last year that my last cut of the year was October! That’s quite late so you may be paying for a few cuts more.

My mum pays £20 total for back and front lawns about 5m by 4m each. Fortnightly, but it really needs done about every seven to ten days in the summer (I do mine weekly and it takes about 15 minutes tops. I do it after work sometimes. It’s quick).

BarbaraofSeville · 07/09/2019 19:14

If the gardener is doing next door every other week, I'd just ask if he can fit you in at the same time as fortnightly is fine and I never do ours over winter.

Last cut some time in October and then fine until March/April, but it depends on the weather and where you are in the country. Last summer was great as the grass barely grew in the dry weather so I only did it a couple of times over the summer.
