Things people used/had that are now considered old fashioned

Saw another poster on a thread talking about landlines! It seems in the past few years that people either don't have one or use them less. I don't have one, I do think they're old fashioned Grin

Anyone have any more to share?

I still have a teasmade, inherited from my granny, though it is not very old.

My daughter so wants one that will make coffee, you'd think it wouldn't be that difficult to find, would you? She helped fund the development of one, then paid over €300 for the finished product 😐 A wonky-looking fragile item that made really weak coffee, and the cup got broken, it's now thrown in the bottom of a cupboard somewhere 😐

There's one born every minute 😂

...when I say 'helped fund' I meant putting a few quid towards a crowdfunder.

Bum bags are still in use. I wear mine when I go running, with my phone and dog poo bags in it (I run with the dog, the bags aren't for me). Plus tissues because my nose always runs along with me.

I have analogue watches and alarm clocks (although battery operated).
I find getting ready using an analogue clock much easier - ie I can glance at it and see I've got 20mins left before I need to go - whereas I find it harder to quickly work this out with a digital read out.
I've tried using timers on the phone but then I have to pick up the phone to check...

I also have a Philips Tea for Two.
Meant for two small cups provided, you can put a mug under the twin outlets and it uses the same amount of water.
I set my alarm for 20mins early, hit the button then have a cuppa in bed, browsing the papers on my iPad, and feel human when I get up!

I actually really dislike the scorn for things which are deemed to be old-fashioned. It suggests a very narrow perspective of the world - as if you cannot conceive of anyone not living as you do.

We still have DVDs because our Wifi cannot cope with streaming to our TV. So we all either watch on our own devices or watch DVDs as a family. Guess which we choose?

We have an A-Z in the car, and we use a paper calendar. I think increasingly total reliance on technology can be a little naive but then I read too much dystopian fiction...

Avocado bath suite just reminded me, when I was a kid our bathroom had mirrored tiles with a big black white and greenish motif of a ship 'painted' over it (It was obvs printed on) - totally forgot until now! Does anyone know what I mean?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/09/2019 10:15

LenoVintura - do you have a physical problem which makes you unable to write a cheque (despite being able to use a paper diary) or are you just enjoying exercising power over your window cleaner? He's given you two alternative ways to pay, neither of which you appear capable enough to use. Perhaps you should clean your own bloody windows.

BertieBotts · 08/09/2019 10:17

DS was fascinated to see somebody smoke a pipe the other day :o he said he's never seen one before!

Juells · 08/09/2019 10:20

Bloomin' 'eck, TheOnlyLivingBoy, I went back to read that post out of curiosity.
I use a paper diary. On a business call recently we were arranging a meeting and my colleague said "are you turning pages in an actual diary?" She thought it was hilarious
OTOH, we are in a standoff with our window cleaner currently as he will only accept cash or cheque in payment, but we never seem to have cash to hand when he calls for his money and neither of us has written a cheque since God were a lad. We've told him that we either pay him online or we'll find someone else to do it. He keeps coming, we keep not paying. We're fascinated to see how it plays out.

"It's cute and funny and individual when we're all non-tech, but we'll make a window-cleaner's life a misery because he won't take CCs."

theconstantinoplegardener · 08/09/2019 10:20

I'm sure I read recently that coloured bathroom suites were enjoying a revival and that we would be seeing a lot more of them in the next year or two!

Juells · 08/09/2019 10:21

I predict it will end up in Small Claims Court

Ohflippineck · 08/09/2019 10:24

I use our landline, write things in my paper diary, watch DVDs and listen to CDs in the car.
Oh dear, I’m obsolete Grin

Jenniferturkington · 08/09/2019 10:27

People used to take transistor radios to football matches. You don’t see it anymore- just phones.

Milkstick · 08/09/2019 10:28

I love the Alfie and Annie Rose books for this kind of nostalgia. I could look at those for ages.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 08/09/2019 10:32

My aunt still has her 40+ year old maroon/purplish bathroom suite. She has a corner bath and a bidet. And carpet on the floor- also 40+ years old Grin

notacooldad · 08/09/2019 10:33

Cash is perfectly reasonable and he has done his work.
If this is true you are acting like a right cock having a laugh at some one else's expense. Disgusting.

cushioncovers · 08/09/2019 10:41

Toilet mats - were they to keep feet warm ot catch drips 🤷‍♀️?

Do you have any boys in your house?😂. It's definitely to catch drips.

cushioncovers · 08/09/2019 10:43

My bathroom is the original pink one from 1976. I keep hoping for it to come back into fashion. Grin

HowlsMovingBungalow · 08/09/2019 10:51

Cars that you actually have to drive ie no parking sensors, automatic windscreen wipers/lights, cruise control etc.

Buying from catalogues, newspaper ads, leaflets in the sunday supplements.

Using phoneboxes.

AgnesNutterWitch · 08/09/2019 10:53

Re DVDs, we still use them. Streaming is great but we're a multilingual household and amazon video is really restrictive in terms of getting content in other languages. Netflix is a little better but is often just dubs of US stuff.

So for kids films especially and certain boxsets we still import DVDs in.

WanderingMind · 08/09/2019 10:54

I wear a half-slip under skirts, it makes them hang better. I also love a notebook and pen for reminders, yes my phone has that capability but I prefer my own notes.

superram · 08/09/2019 10:55

I have a China cabinet and a landline with a phone but don’t know the number.

ALittleBitAlexis · 08/09/2019 10:58

Antimacassars in the home.

I still have DVDS, and have had to buy a few recently as things have dropped off the streaming services - as much as I enjoy Netflix etc I don't trust them to keep my old favourites around.

WilburIsSomePig · 08/09/2019 11:05

Oh come now @notacooldad, it's only the window cleaner. It's not like it's someone working to earn a living or something. Oh hang on ...

mindproject · 08/09/2019 11:06

The News on TV - I get all my news from YouTube.

I still have a landline, DVDs, CDs, Filofax, old mobile phone, radio.
