Do you take your phone to bed with you?

Talking to friends the other day, it seems that DH and I are in the minority, in that we leave our phones on charge downstairs overnight.

Which got me wondering if we're the only ones? I keep my tablet beside the bed, as I use it to read/play games etc before I go to sleep (and yes, I know you shouldn't ..)

So can we have a show of hands please? Smile

I do

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 06/09/2019 21:53

Ours go upstairs with us. My dh works nights so we're quite often messaging after I get into bed

YouBoggleMyMind · 06/09/2019 21:53

Yeah we do, but we don't have a landline 📞

IncrediblySadToo · 06/09/2019 21:54

Yes, phone & iPad

EmmiJay · 06/09/2019 21:55

Yes. In case anything happens to a family member and I need to be reached.

HilaryBriss · 06/09/2019 21:56

Yes, I charge it overnight by my bed and use it as an alarm clock.

happypotamus · 06/09/2019 21:56

Yes, because I use it as an alarm clock. Also, if anyone was to call in the middle of the night due to some kind of emergency, they would probably call my mobile.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 06/09/2019 21:56

Yep, both of us do. We both use them for alarms and DH works nights so we often text at night when I'm sitting in bed. Plus we don't have a landline so it's the only way to contact either of us.

Drogosnextwife · 06/09/2019 21:56

I take it to bed to read MN every night. I keep buying books to read but MN takes priority Grin

KittyMcKitty · 06/09/2019 21:56

I didn’t until recently but my alarm clock broke so I use it for that - I have the volume off and it switched to silent however.

The thought of leaving my phone on charge downstairs all night terrifies me, but then I am one of those people who switches everything off at night.

Mine is upstairs with me incase any family needs to get a hold of us, and use it as my alarm too

LifeOfBox · 06/09/2019 21:58

Yes charges next to my bed on do not disturb which means that only my designated close family group can call me after 9pm.

I sleep on the second floor without a hard wired phone point which means I could need my mobile in an emergency- thinking of going broadband only when I renew my landline contract next month.

fireworkbaby · 06/09/2019 22:00

Yes we both take ours up and use them as our alarm clocks. Fine to leave them downstairs but please don't leave them on charge overnight as you are doing as this is a fire risk.

TokenGinger · 06/09/2019 22:00

What if you got broken into and needed to call the police? Or if you or DP fell ill and you needed to call an ambulance but didn't want to leave the other to fetch the phone?

We always take the phones upstairs with us.

Swisskit · 06/09/2019 22:01

Wow, I honestly thought at least one other person would do what we do. I suppose because we have a) a landline and b) an alarm on the TV in the bedroom that we don't need them for that. My DCs (one left home, one still here) both know we leave phones downstairs, so wouldn't even consider messaging us late at night.

I spend a lot of time on my phone during the day, both on social media and Whatsapp, but have always just switched off at bedtime.

I suppose it's just what you get used to.

@TokenGinger, we'd use the landline, as we did before the advent of mobile phones. I suppose it's because we're old enough to remember the days of landline-only that we're not as bothered about being withouth them.

As far as charging them goes, we use the dedicated chargers for this, not cheap versions, which as far as I know are the fire risks.

But you use a tablet to read and play games. I use my phone to read and play games (don't have a tablet) so it's exactly the same thing.
I'm bf DD at the moment so am often on my phone overnight.

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/09/2019 22:10

We take them upstairs, don't use tablets and although we do have a landline its downstairs and a long way from us.

fireworkbaby · 06/09/2019 22:11

The cheap knock off chargers are worse, sure, but it's still recommended not to keep things on charge overnight or to leave them charging unattended for long periods. Why risk it?

KittyMcKitty · 06/09/2019 22:12

What if you got broken into and needed to call the police? Or if you or DP fell ill and you needed to call an ambulance but didn't want to leave the other to fetch the phone

My mobile phone would be useless for either of these as there is no mobile phone reception where we live.

SamBeckett · 06/09/2019 22:14

My company phone stays downstairs ( any one that rings me on that after 9pm can sod off ! )
But my personal one comes upstairs to charge as I listen to BBC radio Iplayer and I use it as a alarm , as PP said mine is also on do not disturb between 9pm and 4am .

LadyB49 · 06/09/2019 22:16

Mine is synced with my Kindle so i use it to read in bed as it's much lighter to hold.

lazylinguist · 06/09/2019 22:17

I charge my mobile on my bedside table, switched off. I don't use it in bed before I switch it off. I read on my Kindle Fire in bed (with a blue light filter on), but although it's a tablet I never ever use it for anything other than reading.

tabulahrasa · 06/09/2019 22:18

What’s the difference between taking a tablet or a phone to bed though?...

And yes, I use it as an alarm and it’s gotvthe kindke app on it and is a nice size to read books on one handed.
