Do you take your phone to bed with you?

Talking to friends the other day, it seems that DH and I are in the minority, in that we leave our phones on charge downstairs overnight.

Which got me wondering if we're the only ones? I keep my tablet beside the bed, as I use it to read/play games etc before I go to sleep (and yes, I know you shouldn't ..)

So can we have a show of hands please? Smile

We had started to leave our phones in the kitchen overnight. Then one day we were at the local fire station and got cornered into doing a fire safety questionnaire. We were told that our mobile phones should be with us overnight in case of fire and needing to call fire service. Apparently even if you have a landline, you should still have your mobile with you as the landline connection could be cut if a fire starts. Ever since then our phones have come back into our bedroom overnight and normal service has resumed!

QuestionableMouse · 06/09/2019 22:18

Yep I do. I don't get the angst over it... It's a phone not a bomb.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/09/2019 22:22

Aside from calls, there's no difference between the ph9ne and the tablet though.

Its like saying "I always leave the IPhone downstairs, but the Android phone is for games in bed. Am I weird?"

AwfulSomething · 06/09/2019 22:24

People still have landlines?

Kiddofreddo80 · 06/09/2019 22:25

I take mine to bed just in case someone needs to contact me. I also have a landline by my bed but I want to make sure I’m contactable for my parents and DC and they might try the mobile first in an emergency rather than the landline so I feel better having both.

I wouldn’t charge anything overnight because as a PP said, it’s a fire risk. Also it’s not good for the life of the phone battery to be charged all night every night

gonewiththelove · 06/09/2019 22:25

Yes it charges in my room

Kiddofreddo80 · 06/09/2019 22:26

My DD is 25 and she has a landline!

Swisskit · 06/09/2019 22:26

As far as fires go, we have 9 smoke detectors in our house, and a strategy to get out if need be. Keys near all doors etc.

The difference with a tablet and phone is that I can't be contacted on my tablet. I don't even have email on it, so there's no communication going on.

I think it's the idea that you can never entirely switch off from messages etc that seems a bit odd to me. If there's an emergency with one of the family, they'll ring the landline. If I need to contact them urgently I'll use the landline, or go downstairs and get my phone.

I just don't feel that I need to have it with me 24/7.

And I'm not criticising anyone who does, I just wondered what most people do these days.

I keep mine on silent in a drawer in my bedrooom so that I can use it if there’s an intruder or some emergency. I can’t have it out because the light wakes me up.

Swisskit · 06/09/2019 22:28

@kiddofreddo probably should have said I only charge it at night when it needs it; I often charge it during the day. But I always leave it downstairs regardless.

No I don't. Seems I am in the minority!

megletthesecond · 06/09/2019 22:30

Yes. But it's turned off at night.

gamerchick · 06/09/2019 22:31

I don't leave anything on charge overnight, especially mobiles because it'll invalidate my house insurance if there's a fire because of it.

Bluntness100 · 06/09/2019 22:32

Yes, in case of emergencies. I have a land line too, but people are more likely to call my mobile, plus if I need to use it then the land line doesn't work if the power is out,

purplepoop · 06/09/2019 22:32

Take it with me. What would you do if you needed a phone in an emergency, say a burglar? And a big NO to leaving it on charge overnight.

Kiddofreddo80 · 06/09/2019 22:32

Fair enough but if it needs charging say for 2 hours and it’s on for another 6/7 hours after it’s been fully charged, just be aware it will fuck the battery up! I speak from experience

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 06/09/2019 22:32

Mine stays downstairs, turned off. Never really thought of taking it upstairs! Have a landline and an alarm clock. Am clearly old.

speakout · 06/09/2019 22:33

Absolutely keep mine with me. My alarm clock, plus i have older teens who are often out/coming home or will text me to tell me they are stayng at friends/please could I wake them early/let them sleep late etc

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/09/2019 22:34

I use mine as an alarm, plus put my Fitbit to sleep as I go to bed. It’s always on silent anyway.

Bingbangbong89 · 06/09/2019 22:34

Ok but your house would still be on fire. Those things don’t make a fire less likely- they just make it safer for you. But your house will still be on fire even if you’re able to get out so why take that risk?

firesong · 06/09/2019 22:34

Yes. It's my alarm.

MsPepperPotts · 06/09/2019 22:38

No mobile phone in my bedroom.
It's kept in the living room overnight but I never leave it on charge over night.
laptop with kindle app for reading and for MN Smile but I always close it down overnight.

GOODCAT · 06/09/2019 22:38

We leave ours switched off downstairs

ilovemytumbledryer · 06/09/2019 22:38

Yes

MrsDimmond · 06/09/2019 22:40

Essentially you are the same as most people OP. At night you have access to a phone for emergency contact and a device for games / internet etc. It just so happens that your method of phone contact is via landline instead of via mobile network. Confused
