What products do you think are worth paying more for?

Yesterday I was in Asda on my way back from the school hike and fancied some cherry bakewells. We'd watched them being made a while back on Inside The Factory and never got round to buying any. Anyway, Asda's own we're half the price of Mr Kipling and therefore I thought I'd give them a go. Let's just say I can see why mr Kipling are twice the price! Asda's are rather dry and very crumbly. I won't but them again. Heinz beans are superior too although I hear branston beans are better. I've yet to try them. I'll buy own brand butter happily though.

Earl Grey Tea!
I buy Newby in individual foil sachets. Used to be able to get them in Waitrose but they have stopped doing them. Luckily, Amazon do them!

binkyclink · 06/09/2019 10:05

Not related to food but uggs : )

I've never bought any imitation of the style.

Can't beat the proper Uggs for winter. Just treated myself to a brown leather pair ( the original style but in brown leather ) as they are more wearable in rain etc ( as long as it's not ridiculous rain) couldn't wear my others in light rain as didn't want to risk staining/dirtying them.

Oh I've found a food related one OP - HP brown sauce, I buy supermarket own brand mayo, ketchup & salad cream but always good old HP brown sauce.

binkyclink · 06/09/2019 10:07

Oh another one I've just thought of - also earl grey tea, I tried Asda's own 'The best earl grey ' tea bags, they were ok but they weren't quite strong enough for my liking, so reverted back to Twinnings Earl grey.

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/09/2019 12:00

Paint. I made a mistake and bought cheap paint when I redecorated my living room. One wall took five coats, and it still looks patchy. I should have just bought the proper Dulux stuff in a proper paint shop, and will do next time I decorate.

Tomato ketchup is something the children are not that particular about but say the one from aldi their dad gets is horrible. Asda, Tesco or co-op is all good. Ds is the brown sauce eater here and he's not fussy. Tea has to be Tetley, pasta from Tesco or Waitrose but has a weird cinnamon flavour from Asda. Chopped tomatoes and passata-definite difference in more expensive ones. Peas have to be bird's eye. Andrew loo roll. Kleenex balsam tissues.
I've spent a long time trying to get my elderly mum to swap to own brands to save her pittance of a pension. She's a convert on a lot of things. I used to have the piss ripped out of me at uni as I was brought up with brands and had del Monte tinned fruit instead of Tesco's but. I soon changed my shopping habits but some things remain Grin

Cold sore or blister plasters, Compeed are the only way 😣

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 06/09/2019 12:04

One thing I'll never understand is people buying branded regular paracetamol or ibuprofen. I've discovered boots or tescos own indigestion tablets and converted my mum from gavisvon. Revolting gloopy stuff and costs a fortune! Less than £2 for a box of the peppermint indigestion tablets. Easier to carry round too.No brainier really.

Birdseye peas are my luxury. I thought peas were peas and tried own brand ones but they are surprisingly tasteless in comparison.

Nottobesoldseparately · 06/09/2019 12:08

Rubber gloves. Marigolds are the best.

Doritos. We've tried the cheaper versions but they are shit.

Robinson's cordial. I do buy own brands depending on budget and what else we need, but I'll forgo other stuff to get it.

Clinique.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 06/09/2019 12:18

HP/Daddies brown sauce
Heinz tomato sauce
Diet Coke
Doritos
Monster munch

Anything else is pretty much Aldi/Lidl

NormaLouiseBates · 06/09/2019 12:28

Quite a lot when I look around my kitchen it would seem!

Tea - has to be Yorkshire tea.
Rubber gloves - must be Marigold
Washing up liquid - Fairy
Butter (well, technically 'spread') - Clover
Mayonnaise - used to be Hellmans but actually find Heinz much nicer now.
Beans - Heinz
Bread - Warbutons
Squash - Robinsons
Fabric conditioner - Method (the coconut one is just lovely)
Most cleaning products - Method (the clementine kitchen cleaner and the almond floor cleaner almost make cleaning enjoyable Wink)

I have tried the cheaper / own brand versions of all of the above but they just don't compare.

On the other hand, I'll buy the own brand of all of the following - olive oil, tinned tomatoes, dried pasta, digestives, dishwasher tablets, bleach, sausage rolls, toilet roll, kitchen roll, mustard and dried herbs/spices.

LenoVentura · 06/09/2019 12:38

Twinings Decaff Earl Grey - nothing else comes close, but it's wicked expensive.
Bread - there's no substitute for good bread and you get what you pay for in that regard I think.
Cheap shoes - no.
Professional advice.

DerelictWreck · 06/09/2019 12:43

This is why I love watching Eat Well for Less - because they do the bling taste testing.

Winners:
Green GIant Sweetcorn
Birdseye Peas
Aldi Tonic Water followed by Fever Tree (Schwepps coming bottom by far)
Waitrose Essentail Tomato Ketchup, followed by Heinz (FYI tesco ketchup is 50% sugar [shocked])
YeoVAlley natural yoghurt
Sainsbury's basics Fromage Frais - FYI petit filou did really badly and have SO much sugar in!

goingtotown · 06/09/2019 12:51

Nespresso coffee pods.

Sparkle733 · 06/09/2019 12:52

Heinz Mayo!!!

Spidey66 · 06/09/2019 12:55

Kelloggs Corn Flakes
Diet Coke.

Katinski · 06/09/2019 12:55

Daddies Sauce when I can find itBlush Any others seem too sweet to me.

lazylinguist · 06/09/2019 12:59

Tea (from my local independent tea seller)
Coffee (ground, never instant)
Bread (Homemade or proper bakery)
Butter (proper butter, not 'spread')
Chocolate (proper chocolate - not necessarily high-end brands, but not oily sugary Cadbury-style crap)
Peanut butter (pure, unsweetened)

Not skincare - I think high-end skincare is a total con.

Nottobesoldseparately · 06/09/2019 13:00

Oh. It needs to be Pepsi Max too.

I will buy diet coke if I'm desperate (It's a mixer for my spiced rum, which I'm not particular about)but no other cheap cola.

Happily buy other own brand fizzy drinks.

Milomonster · 06/09/2019 13:01

Never underand why people pay for branded Weetabix. Tesco does a super cheap version by Stockwell (I think it owns this brand). 75p for 24. Nutritional content the same as more expensive version and tastes the same.

Vinorosso74 · 06/09/2019 13:01

Has to be Heinz beans and ketchup. I don't drink it very often but it has to be Coke Zero/Diet Coke. Apart from that I'm not too fussy and am happy to try different ones.

TrophyCat · 06/09/2019 13:02

Clinique dramatically different moisturizer. It's the only moisturizer my skin will absorb without being oily or causing spots.

Good lemonade, I am sensitive to sweeteners and so now have to buy more expensive lemonade to have in my Pimm's (Waitrose do a very good one)

Good quality toilet paper.

Carrots from my local farmers market

dottydally · 06/09/2019 13:20

Interestingly @Milomonster, weetabix is one thing I think has to be branded. I don't think the supermarket own soaks up milk in the same way and there are often random crunchy bits left in the middle Envy

BuildBuildings · 06/09/2019 13:20

Ground coffee not instant. To me they're just not the same drink.

Tony's chocolate is amazing and worth the money. It's around 3.50 a big bar.

I really understand on the cakes thing. I mean it's not like you're buying so many that another pound or 2 makes a difference. (to some people I know it does)

Symptomless · 06/09/2019 13:23

Mayonnaise, chocolate and marmite.
