Yesterday (Tuesday), I arranged an appointment. The person said, “I can fit you in next Wednesday.”

Would you turn up today or on Wednesday of next week?

Erm, nope! Her mistake, her problem. If the breakfast club fee was only a pound or two and you really wanted to keep her as a provider, you could offer to split it with her as a gesture of goodwill, but I don't think you could reasonably be expected to pay it.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 04/09/2019 11:59

She has admitted she is wrong. No fees of any kind should be payable by you.

ShadyLady53 · 04/09/2019 12:07

@spiderlight It’s £8.75 as the fee apparently goes up if it’s only booked in the night before. Less than the £35 fee that I was going to be charged but still...I think she’s coming across as unreasonable to a loyal customer (3 years!) and I’m tempted to just find someone else.

'Next' is alway the following week, 'this', or just Wednesday refers to the Wednesday day of the week we're currently in.

I always see 'next Wednesday' as a contraction of, 'the Wednesday of next week'.

I've typed Wednesday too many times now. It's starting to look odd.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 04/09/2019 12:29

Point out to her that she's going to lose a lot more than 8 quid when you stop using her services.

pottedshrimps · 04/09/2019 12:33

'Next' means the next week.

'This' means the week you're currently in. So they should have said this Wednesday, or tomorrow.

sorrythisusernameistaken · 04/09/2019 12:38

Don't pay the child's breakfast club she's messed up! Find someone else and tell her why you're leaving. Absolute madness!!

RebootYourEngine · 04/09/2019 12:49

She's a CF.

It's nice that she admitted that she was wrong but she is a CF because she still wants you to pay her something.

I know that it doesn't make a difference but I really want to know what the appointment was for.

InsertFunnyUsername · 04/09/2019 12:59

Shes a CF. And should work on her communication.

"Can fit you in tomorrow at 9" even "how about this Wednesday" would have made more sense. I would have thought next week wednesday too.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/09/2019 13:51

Wednesday week after

amusedbush · 04/09/2019 13:51

I'm another who thinks she should have said "this Wednesday". I'd be disputing it.

ShadyLady53 · 04/09/2019 13:52

I know that it doesn't make a difference but I really want to know what the appointment was for.

It was a complimentary therapy type appointment.

I grew up in London and I always take 'next' to mean 'the next one to come along'. So I wouldn't wait for one bus to pass if I was going to take the 'next' one. Thus I would take 'next Wednesday to mean the day after tomorrow if it were Monday, but I would ask if she meant tomorrow if we were on Tuesday.

I know that there is room for confusion so I would always confirm the date and I think you should have done that because 'next' is ambiguous.

In this case she never checked that you both meant the same date, either, plus she admits she's wrong, so I wouldn't pay at all.

TokyoSushi · 04/09/2019 14:10

Next week, today would have been 'this Wednesday' or tomorrow

Hidingtonothing · 04/09/2019 14:20

I would just send back 'so you acknowledge you were unclear and that others have confirmed my understanding of the situation but you still want me to pay your costs?' Hopefully she'll realise how unreasonable that is.

WarmSausageTea · 04/09/2019 14:24

I’d be inclined to point out that she is jeopardising years of future custom for £8.75. I’m not generally a fan of the expression, but she needs to give her head a wobble.

64sNewName · 04/09/2019 14:27

She’s asking you to pay the cost of her error?

Wtf?

FrancesFlute · 04/09/2019 14:28

Cheeky! Don't pay for the club - it's her issue. Find a different provider from now on if she can't be fair - guessing it's hairdresser or similar?

64sNewName · 04/09/2019 14:30

she is jeopardising years of future custom for £8.75

Exactly. It’s very silly. But she does sound pretty silly in general, tbh.

In fact, the awkwardness around this would make me reluctant to use her again regardless of outcome/apology at this point. Complementary therapies are supposed to make you feel relaxed, right? Which I wouldn’t with all this nonsense as the elephant in the room while she stroked my chakras or whatever.

BogglesGoggles · 04/09/2019 14:33

I come from I think the convention next is next. Next week is day week (e.g. Wednesday week). But I would take it to me next Wednesday.

BogglesGoggles · 04/09/2019 14:33

Wow, that was stupid of me. I would take it to mean Wednesday next week.

ShadyLady53 · 04/09/2019 14:34

Yes that is pretty much how I feel about it too.

Gustavo1 · 04/09/2019 14:53

This is really awkward. I completely agree that regardless of the day she thought it was, next Wednesday would not have been today. That would have been on Wednesday or this Wednesday.
If I were you, I would step back from the communications for now. If you ignore the request for the school club money, is she likely to chase it?

HeadintheiClouds · 04/09/2019 15:07

Any “next” means it’s after the next one along, iinwim. On Monday, next Thursday is Thursday week, this Thursday is three days time.
That’s the accepted usage, if she has her own version it’s not your problem.
