About your use of handbags

Do you have one handbag that you use all the time or do you use a different handbag every day to match your outfit?

If the latter do you transfer everything from bag A to bag B every morning or do you keep duplicates of most things like lip balm tissues and just move your wallet/key/phone from bag to bag? Or do people use those handbag inners I've heard about and just pull them out and stick it in the next bag but wasn't sure how that would work if bags are different shapes/sizes.

Normally carry a huge tote around but swapped for a smaller bag when I went away and enjoying not having such a weight on my shoulder. But... I can't fit my umbrella or emergency glasses in there.

What do you keep in your handbag on an everyday basis?

Just general handbag nosiness... Grin

I don’t own a handbag.

I have pockets.

What more do you need than phone, keys and credit card

Lots of things! And a tape measure. I never go anywhere without one. It's amazing how often it comes in useful.

Driving licence
Epipen and Benadryl
Glasses for reading
Headphones for blocking out the sound of other people's children
Indigestion tablets for when the headphones aren't enough

I have a few bags for different purposes. Handbag, day pack, and backpack. They all have basics in at all times: tissues, tampons, lip balm, painkillers, antihistamines, spare meds, pen, notebook, wet wipes, hand sanitiser, moisturiser, charging cable, inhaler, shopping bag, bobbles. I switch purse, phone, keys, and power bank between them as needed. I have an old black clutch that suits most formal needs, and it fits keys, purse, inhaler, painkillers, and phone in quite easily.

I’d love to be able to afford a more expensive workhorse leather bag, but have too much needing to be dealt with to save. One day... :o

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/09/2019 02:45

But do you actually need all the stuff or have you got used to having it and don't really need it.

If you are working do you carry a briefcase. Why doesn't stuff go in there. Why do you need a separate handbag. Men don't carry multiple bags

I have pockets for my keys and phone etc

MinnieMountain · 03/09/2019 06:39

I have rucksacks as I cycle everywhere.
Work one is grey suede. Other one is a small blue Deuter.
I keep purse, phone, keys, notebook, tissues, medication, tampons, water, sunscreen and a radio in mine.
I've got 2 fancy leather handbags in my wardrobe but rarely use them these days.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 03/09/2019 06:55

I've got lots of different bags/handbags that I match to outfit.

I have a bag organiser that just lifts out, so can change everything over in a few seconds.

Usually have: phone, purse, sunglasses, inhaler, folded plastic bag for shopping, paracetamol (one foil thing out of packet), couple of plasters, earplugs (for travel), headphones.

The organiser is good as it has lots of different pockets, so everything can have its place, and it doesn't become a muddle.

CakeNinja · 03/09/2019 07:22

I swap most days depending on what I’m wearing but only carry purse (or just my card if it’s a small bag), keys and phone.
None of the other things some of you carry about!! I don’t even own an umbrella or one pair of reading glasses Grin
Obviously other things can go in if I need them eg tampons and spare knickers but my sunglasses live on my head, I don’t carry snacks/tissues/medication/chewing gum etc anywhere.

EmpressJewel · 03/09/2019 08:13

I have an everyday bag for work and the lots of other bags of various styles and sizes which I use depending on the occasion.

I have a handbag insert which I use to change my bags and it has been a game changer.

getupgonow · 03/09/2019 08:27

I have (nice) back packs as I have a dodgy back. I generally carry:

  • medical kit (I have a long term condition that may need emergency meds)
  • small pouch containing chargers etc
  • purse
  • kindle
  • phone
  • scarf
  • raincoat if I use a big enough bag
Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2019 08:33

Like PP have one of those handbag organisers that I just swap between handbags. It's genius and was about £3 from Primark.

Sn0tnose · 03/09/2019 08:37

I have two work bags (exactly the same design but different colours) that I swap small umbrella, diary, pencil case, security pass, ipod, pencil case containing pills, plasters, sanpro etc, purse, keys and phone between. Both are really roomy so I can fit loads more in if I need to.

If I’m out, I have three Mulberrys (one is a Luella Bartley for Mulberry which is huge and could fit a small child in it) a Gucci, an Aspinal and a Chloe. I also have a couple of Burberrys tucked away in their dust bags, waiting until everyone has forgotten about Daniela Westbrook. These fit all of the above, except my security pass (which always stays in my work bags).

If I’m out out, I have my favourite Phillip Treacy clutch and some cheapy ones that I love. These fit my small keys (just my door keys, no lockers, work keys, etc), a card, some loose cash and not much else.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/09/2019 08:40

I don’t even bother with a designer handbag, I put everything on my bench then carry that around instead Wink

Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2019 08:49

This is my organiser.

About your use of handbags
senua · 03/09/2019 09:17

I have Had My Colours Done so everything in my wardrobe colour-coordinates. That includes handbags. I have two main bags (leather, of course) and swap between them as the mood takes me, using one of those handbag organiser things (top present from a top friendSmile). I take everything that might be useful in my handbag. DD takes the minimum possible and that's usually in her DH's pockets. I don't know how she can live like that!
I have a smaller crossbody bag with lots of compartments and zips that I use when being ultra-cautious eg on holiday or at gigs.
I also have lots and lots of evening bags in a myriad of colours (cheap from charity shops). They get minimum wear so the leather rule doesn't apply - lots of satin, silk, sequin, etc.

CrispMornings · 03/09/2019 09:28

Handbag: wallet, driving licence, keys, phone, lippy, tiny purse of pain killers, anti inflams, anti histamine, plasters. Pen, tiny notebook. Clear it weekly of lifemin.

Have an autumn/winter bag and a spring/summer bag. Usually spend £150-£200 but they last three seasons.

Also have a work bag - laptop, pad, work papers, pencil case, pass etc. Again weekly clear out. Has a tiny wallet with a tenner in it so I don't have to pfaff.

In addition I have a quality evening bag and often buy a cheaper, coloured bag for events: weddings, racing, etc.

PeriComoToes · 03/09/2019 09:33

oliversarmy I rarely wear jeans/trousers and in the last few months haven't worn a jacket hence no pockets. What am I supposed to do with purse, house keys, phone - essentials - and water bottle/tissues/reading glasses etc admittedly 'non essentials' but good to have if you're going to be out for a few hours?

Also, stuffing things in pockets spoil the line of clothes. Yes! I care about this. Call me shallow for caring about my appearance and also comfort (I don't want to sit on my phone whilst I'm driving/out to lunch).

You don't 'do' bags. Well done. How wonderful to be free of these shackles that clearly are just a tool of the patriarchy.

TheRLodger · 03/09/2019 09:34

I have one main handbag and which was £100 and a Christmas present. I tend to get about 5 years worth of use of this before it looks too tired / battered. I do have other bags which I use if it’s a night out / special occasion or something and would go better with an outfit. I might take a different bag if going on holiday to one which is easier to put in a suitcase. I also have a bag especially for work.

Babdoc · 03/09/2019 09:35

I don’t bother with a handbag. I have good sized pockets in my coat. They contain:
Car key
House key
Credit card wallet
A couple of tissues
My reading glasses
£10 note and some coins for parking
A biro
My phone.
I don’t need anything else.

LemonPrism · 03/09/2019 09:37

I have a big tote for work and then swap on weekends when I need to. I also swap every few months between my bags when I remember how much I liked a different one.

I don't really plan to have lip balm and tissues etc. Start with keys, wallet, phone, water and just add crap as needed.

Mir9imid · 03/09/2019 09:38

I don't have a handbag either. House keys, phone and bank cards in the phone case all go in my pocket.

PeriComoToes · 03/09/2019 09:42

babdoc were you really wearing a coat over the last few weeks? Fine if you live in Scotland but certainly in the South of England wearing a coat would be ridiculously uncomfortable in the heat we've had.

chatwoo · 03/09/2019 09:45

I have quite a few bags, but have recently twigged that I only use certain styles and don't need to carry around so much stuff "just in case". I'm giving away some bags and if I purchase new ones, they have to be something I don't already have, and will definitely use.

Anyway, long story short! Currently using a fairly small cross body bag for work, containing: keys, mobile, work pass, travel card, cash/cards in a flat coin pouch and a few small bits like tweezers, hair bobble, San pro (in a small pouch).

chatwoo · 03/09/2019 09:46

Should have said that I have a small box in my wardrobe for handbag items that aren't always in use, like: brush, sunglasses, numerous lip balms, umbrella etc.

Strugglingtodomybest · 03/09/2019 09:49

I don't use a handbag normally, I keep my credit card in my phone case and my phone in my back pocket. Keys go in my front pocket.

If I need a bag due to lack of pockets, I have a small selection that I've picked up from clothes swaps and freebie bags from conferences. I usually use the same one over and over until it's worn out. And yes, I am generally a scruff!
