Do you wear a burkini or swim leggings?

How do you get the sand out?

I've only used my swim leggings and rash vest in pools and lakes/rivers before. I'm now on a beach holiday, and my leggings are constantly full of sand. I wash and rinse, I leave them to dry and give them a good shake, they seem sand-free. But the next time I wear them - there's sand in them! I think the sand gets stuck in the weave.

The rash vest doesn't seem to have this problem, only the leggings.

Any suggestions?

I guess you're all on holiday, too!

Blast with a hair dryer on cool/cold setting?

StarlightLady · 02/09/2019 18:54

I usually wear bikini bottoms without the top. No sand problems. Maybe you need more appropriate swimwear.

Talc is supposed to help get sand off your skin so maybe it would help with your leggings also? Worth a try at least.

Ginfordinner · 02/09/2019 19:47

I assume the OP is covering up more for cultural reasons Starlightlady Hmm
Not everyone goes topless for a start. I'm on holiday and haven't seen any topless women so far.

WildImaginings · 02/09/2019 19:52

Starlightlady Clearly the OP doesn't want to wear bikini bottoms or she would be asking about them Hmm

She is specifically asking for advice on swim leggings or burkinis, so telling her to find more 'appropriate' swimwear likely isn't helpful.

OP, I don't have any advice because I tend to just wear standard bathers nowadays. I did used to cover my legs but it was mainly due to being self conscious due to an issue with my leg. I never did get to grips with the sand problem so I'm watching with interest in case the issue reoccurs and I'm in need of covering up again.

Would be useful to know how to tackle the sand!

JellyBellies · 02/09/2019 19:55

Same issue with leggings. I now wear swimsuits with built in shorts, sorry I know it doesn't answer the question!

The washing machine can get rid of the sand. My only solution is to take multiple swim leggings and try to find a laundromat?

LoonyLunaLoo · 02/09/2019 20:01

No advice sorry but it sounds hideously I’m comfortable! 🤨 at the person who only wears bikini bottoms offering advice on appropriate swimwear though!

LoonyLunaLoo · 02/09/2019 20:01

*uncomfortable

LifeIsGoodish · 02/09/2019 22:09

The washing machine doesn't shift the sand, and yes, it is uncomfortable until the leggings get wet again. And it means that I ought not wear them in the pool.

Hadn't thought of talc. Will give it a try, maybe rub talc into the dry leggings.

I cover for medical reasons. I'm not bothered by Starlight's nonsense. They usually post something contentious. No doubt had I posted a query regarding the clip on a skimpy bikini, they'd have told me to cover up to sort the problem!

Talc is your friend. It will be messy and you will walk in a cloud. But the sand will bother you no more.

frazzledasarock · 02/09/2019 22:14

I wear burkinis. i don’t have the sand in the leggings problem, I used to dry the swim suit out on the hotel balcony after finding it off under the tap in the bathroom, when in holiday and it was fine to wear the following day.

The leggings were fairly tight, but not uncomfortable and I didn’t get sand inside whilst wearing them either.

frazzledasarock · 02/09/2019 22:15

Rinsing not finding

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 02/09/2019 22:15

Much rather see @LifeIsGoodish on the beach, than a topless @StarlightLady

I could be far off the mark here so sorry if it isnt helpful but would it be more comfortable to wear bikini bottoms under the swim leggings to help with the sand issue?

june2007 · 02/09/2019 22:23

Don't use talc it is a cacnegenic. (can't spell that word.)

thenightsky · 02/09/2019 22:27

short tumble dry (f you are at home). Or dry over the balcony of your hotel room. Maybe take 2 or 3 pairs so you can get each one properly dry between wears?

LifeIsGoodish · 03/09/2019 08:21

Not sure I want to tumble dry my leggings. Where would the sand end up? I'd rather replace £25-worth of leggings than £250-worth of machine!

Seeing as others don't have this problem, and the rash vest doesn't have this problem, maybe it's the weave of this particular make of leggings? The sand is definitely trapped within the weave. I have another pair at home, a different make. Will take them next time I go on holiday.

1st pic - inside of dry, machine-washed leggings (no sand visible)
2nd pic - inside of leggings being stretched (sand appears)
3rd pic - inside of leggings relaxed again (some of the sand has popped out)

Pictures Hmm
Dodgy wifi? Will try again later.

frazzledasarock · 03/09/2019 08:49

Are the leggings made of the same material as the rash vest?

My burkini is made of the same material as a wetsuit and sand definitely doesn’t get inside it.

It could be the material, it could be the way it’s sewn together.
I got mine from here. I don’t think they sell separates tho.

Foslady · 03/09/2019 09:38

Have you tried stretching the material and then putting it under a tap? I used to have a costume that stretched when worn and trapped sand in it and that was the only way I could remove it

LittleSweet · 03/09/2019 09:48

You can buy talc free talcum powder . I got some from amazon. It's made from cornflour.

HardAsSnails · 03/09/2019 09:57

Can't see the pictures, but what you describe sounds like when the elastic breaks down in the fibre, so when you overstretch it (as you describe for pic 2) it fragments, and is released when you relax the fabric (what you describe in pic3). It happens to swimming costumes that aren't properly rinsed after being in chlorinated pools and bio washing powder can do it too.

Anyonebut · 03/09/2019 10:20

Do you wash them inside out?

Kinsters · 03/09/2019 10:28

I wear leggings and a rash vest and haven't ever noticed this problem tbh. I always take them off and rinse them in the shower when I get off the beach and that seems to do the trick.

Having said that I don't spend a lot of time lying on the sand, I'm either in the water or sat in the shade/off the beach.
