Apple butter

DC had this on holiday. There were different types, I think there was a chocolate version. But it's one that tastes like caramel apples that is loved. We brought a tiny jar home, assumed I'd find it here but no luck. Internet but helpful either.

Anyone know of supermarket stocking a similar product?

I made some in the slow cooker last year. It's very, very easy.

BoredMouse · 31/08/2019 15:36

Who makes it?

TonTonMacoute · 31/08/2019 15:37

I was also going to say make it yourself, it really is simple to do!

Dontthrowfruitatacomputer · 31/08/2019 15:42

Made by Cannelle. DC wanted to bring loads back but I figured you could pretty much but anything in the supermarkets these days.

I'm not great in the kitchen. Reluctant to try something new.

Not the kind of thing I've seen in stores but it's more of a home made product.

Make it in the slow cooker. Peel, core, and chop loads of apples. Add sugar and cinnamon to taste. Cook on low for ages, like 12 hours. I've even done longer. Blend with stick blender. It will thicken a bit when cool. Shouldn't need to add water. So delicious. You can store in fridge or freezer, or if you have lots you can treat like jam as it's so acidic. Sterilise your jars in oven and bottle when everything is hot. Will keep ages like jam.

Cooking apples or eating?

NannyR · 31/08/2019 18:37

Is the Apple butter company any good? It says they will post it.
I think cannelle refers to cinnamon flavour, rather than the brand.

Dontthrowfruitatacomputer · 31/08/2019 19:23

I think cannelle refers to cinnamon flavour thank you! Blush

Thank you for the link as well. I'll drop them an email.

I haven't got a slow cooker or I'd be tempted to give it a go. Thanks for the info though. Might be something to try this winter.

I've not had apple butter before but it sounds delicious. Do you put it on toast, croissants, etc?

ourmamageddon · 31/08/2019 19:31

mmm sounds delicious! What sort of apples - cooking apples?

Dontthrowfruitatacomputer · 31/08/2019 19:53

DC have had it on crepes, waffles and toast. It's very sweet so I imagine toast is best. I had it on sliced milk roll bread. I'm being healthy just now so haven't had much but it's very delicious.

So basically apple sauce? The neighbour gave me loads of cooking apples today, I have proper cinnamon (not the more common cassia). I might give this a go if I can find a spare jar.

Dontthrowfruitatacomputer · 31/08/2019 20:10

I think it's basically apple sauce cooked longer. It has a really strong caramel flavour and is a smooth spread.

I think the one from Dieppe has butter in it as well, whereas the north American one tends to have no butter, or just a tiny bit at the end.

LesLavandes · 31/08/2019 20:15

Where did you buy it?

Happycow · 31/08/2019 20:19

You could try Jersey Butter - its a by-product of the cider making i believe and is cooked up with lots of different spices. Delicious on toast, with cheese etc!

But more spiced than what you have (and is more of a paste than a sauce) but is totally delicious!

LadyB49 · 31/08/2019 20:22

I made it last year to use up apples from our two trees. A lot of apples go down into much less Apple butter. I used it on everything including ice cream and roast pork.

Truly delicious.

Dontthrowfruitatacomputer · 31/08/2019 20:51

Well now I know Cannelle wasn't the brand I was able to find it on the internet. Not sure if this link works.

link. www.carameldepommesdieppois

It does indeed contain butter ... And (happily) can be ordered online. Seems that it's not available much further than outside Normandy. Although the article I was reading was a couple of years old.

Definitely try Jersey Black Butter

I'm not sure where sells it outside the Channel Islands though

TheClitterati · 01/09/2019 00:00

I had this in Canada years ago. Never seen it in the shops here

managedmis · 01/09/2019 02:51

Yeah, you mix apple sauce with butter to make it. Totally yum

managedmis · 01/09/2019 02:52

This recipe doesn't contain butter, it needs a long slow cook instead

Apple butter is great and really easy to cook with a slow cooker although perfectly possible without.
I have never used butter but do like cinnamon as a flavor.
Great for using up large windfall hauls.
