Apple butter

DC had this on holiday. There were different types, I think there was a chocolate version. But it's one that tastes like caramel apples that is loved. We brought a tiny jar home, assumed I'd find it here but no luck. Internet but helpful either.

Anyone know of supermarket stocking a similar product?

Proper apple butter is cooked with brown sugar. If cooking in slow cooker, add 1 tsp. lemon juice (not flavoring) for every pound of apples. Cook and stir occasionally for about 10 hours until thick and brown.

I just found a recipe for the original version which you could just add cinnamon to.

Basically 800g stewed apples, 200g sugar, 10cl warm single cream, 100g soft butter.

Melt the sugar I to a caramel, add the cream and gently heat. Stir for a few minutes then add the butter and stir again until it's all mixed in. Add the apple and again keep stirring til all is well mixed.

Pour into sterile bottles.

Think I'll give it a go, sounds good.

Another place to buy it online. www.larosedesvents-etretat.com/caramel-de-pommes-dieppois/337-caramel-de-pommes-dieppois-cannelle-430g.html
Maybe also try making it, it is super easy.

This sounds great but can anyone tell me what ‘sugar to taste’ means in grams? Tia

MyOtherProfile · 01/09/2019 08:38

It means you put in as much sugar as suits your taste, depending on how sweet you want it.

I make mine every year on top of the hob, soooo easy, the house smells divine and it's super delicious. We have ours as a desert topping, on pancakes or just by itself like a desert. I only add a little sugar, "to taste" depends whether u use cooking apples or eating/desert apples (u need more with cooking apples as they are quite tart). For desert apples I use about half a cup for a large caserole-like pot.
Anyone with access to an apple tree should make it and not waste amazing organic apples (I don't even peel mine).

From the French recipe I posted above it seems you need butter and cream too. I'm going to try this with some of our apple mountain.

Ok so for a kg of apples about 100g of sugar? Is that about right? I have moved into a house with about 10 Apple trees and I’m a bit intimidated by them 😂

It is lovely but I am keen for any recipes people have on using them up! I think one is Bramleys but not sure on the others.

Just make that apple butter and seal in jars for the winter.

I don't peel mine, just wash and core them, then cut up, cook sloowly with some sugar and cinnamon and seal in jars. I reuse jars from other preserves I had.

Dontthrowfruitatacomputer · 01/09/2019 10:55

Thanks for the various recipes and links.

I think Holland and Barrett do it - they definitely used to. I had it on toast for breakfast every day as a child, my mum bought it from a health food shop. She bought some recently in H&B after seeing it for the first time in years.

We have masses of apples too so I will give this a try. Usually I turn all our apples into apple date and chilli chutney to give away as presents
