In what year will there be pictures of little Darren and Joanne skipping through fields in a Sunday supplement article?

OP posts:

I work in schools and have recently encountered a little Derrick, Alan, Penelope and Bobby.
Kelly is a name that I haven’t encountered since school.

emilybrontescorsett · 30/08/2019 09:26

Sylvia and Edith were relatives of mine, I love those names.
I also love Enid and Agnes.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/08/2019 09:32

There was a Pamela at DS's nursery! The family were east Asian.

There was also an Audrey.

Oldraver · 30/08/2019 09:55

My Grandma (born 1909) was a Gladys, I doubt it would ever have a comeback but would be good. I did read it's a modern version of Claudia

ElizaPancakes · 30/08/2019 10:00

I was born in 1982, I can immediately think of at least 3 Joanne’s and 4 Darren’s that I either went to school with or worked with.

@formerbabe what’s wrong with Leanne? I know a couple, admittedly not children!

OtraCosaMariposa · 30/08/2019 10:08

These are names of my generation. I'm in my mid to late 40s. Similar names of people I was at school with that you don't hear any more are Gary, Karen, Sharon, Alan, Keith, Steven, Carol.

A few years ago all the "granny" names like Ada, Ruby, Maude, Enid, Reggie, Alfie came back into fashion. Give it another 25 years and people will be posting "what do you think about Darren or Gary" for a boy on MN baby boards while everyone else is calling their baby Kazooma after the latest Netflix character or something.

Dowser · 30/08/2019 10:15

They’ll probably be spelled Daryn and Jowanne

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 30/08/2019 10:17

I don't think Clive will ever really come back, nor Melanie.

StayInYourLaneBoy · 30/08/2019 10:18

When I was 19 in 1989 there was a really cool girl a year or two younger than me that was called Hilda. This was long before older names became fashionable...

formerbabe · 30/08/2019 10:22

@formerbabe what’s wrong with Leanne? I know a couple, admittedly not children!

So dated and a bit common

Tonnerre · 30/08/2019 10:35

I read today that Geoffrey and Elaine are dying out as names. I can never see them making a come back.

Time was when we thought we'd never see Arthur and Maisie again.

FajitasForTea · 30/08/2019 10:41

I know children under the age of 7 called Karen, Patricia, and Agnes

Joanne is much nicer as Joanna

C0untDucku1a · 30/08/2019 10:43

I know more than one young Geoffrey. African heritage boys.

C0untDucku1a · 30/08/2019 10:44

@StayInYourLaneBoy In the 90’s at school there was a Martha who was very cool. And id never known or heard of a marta before or after until the last 5 years.

AJPTaylor · 30/08/2019 10:44

The last time I looked there were more babies called Valerie and Derek ( my parents names) than Dd3 who is 10!

kierenthecommunity · 30/08/2019 10:56

At Dc school there are 3 Sylvia's and 3 Annabels in my DS's year (aged 6 - 7). Also in the same year a Hilary, Heather and Gwen. One of the Sylvia's has a younger sister (aged 4) called Edith

Does she go to St Clare’s? 😃

Are there many little girls called Victoria these days? There were a few at my school, and it’s my middle name. I think it’s quite classy although I thought it a bit ordinary and common as a teen.

thecatneuterer · 30/08/2019 10:59

I've named my most recently acquired cats Darren, Sharon, Tracy and Gavin. I'm making a note of all the names mentioned above for the next arrivals ...

TweezerMay · 30/08/2019 11:15

There are quite a few Ronnies and Reggies round my way, though not as sibling pairs, luckily 😁 but I always wonder if they’re actually Ronalds and Reginalds on their birth certificates. Reginald! I also know a baby Roger. My DD goes to school with a Dean, a Dale and a Luke which I always think of as 80s names.

Boohooyouho · 30/08/2019 11:25

My daughter has a Deborah in her class which always sounds very 80s

Rachelover40 · 30/08/2019 11:45

HotChocolateLover
One day there are going to be Grandad Tyler’s and Grandma Kimberley’s. Just saying 😂

Tyler's and Kimberley's what?

sweetmusic · 30/08/2019 11:50

I’ve noticed a lot of ‘granny names’ come back into fashion- Agnes, Violet, Elsie, Iris, Mabel etc

Love looking at trends in baby names it’s very interesting!

TopBitchoftheWitches · 30/08/2019 12:00

My cat is called Kevin. It suits him Grin

NewNameJust4Today · 30/08/2019 12:43

I love Penelope and Gwen.

I know a teen Geoffrey.

Bet Donald falls off a cliff popularity wise.

Ohh, Cliff. Don’t get many of them.

isabellerossignol · 30/08/2019 12:50

I know a little boy named Des which I'd imagine is quite unusual.

emilybrontescorsett · 30/08/2019 14:00

I can’t imagine Derek ever becoming fashionable again. There again, I always hated Arthur/Archie/Alfie and now you can’t move for them.
