Are we classed as carers

For a flu vaccination

We can only claim carers allowance once even though 3 dc qualify for it.
So its in my name for one child so I am ‘officially’ a carer

Can dh be considered a carer too for a flu vaccination as there is an underlying entitlement ?

Are your children immune suppressed? My friend has rheumatoid arthritis and her immediate family who she lives with have to have the flu jab as she has to take tablets that suppress her immune system

99problemsandjust1appt · 29/08/2019 16:19

No not immune suppressed

Carer’s allowance is shit. My DP and I have both been given the flu jab at GP practice because we care for our disabled DD, with no questions asked beyond “why are you entitled to the jab?” At the time, I was getting CA and DP wasn’t.

I don't understand why he can't claim careers allowance. You absolutely can claim it if you live in the same house as someone who also claims it. In fact, disabled couples often cross claim it for each other. You claim for one DC and he can claim for another. Contact welfare rights.

scotwood · 29/08/2019 16:35

Sorry just read your update that he can't claim because of his earnings. Totally confusing.

Smurf123 · 29/08/2019 16:39

I asked my gp about flu jab as I work in a sen school (also have mild asthma although didn't order enough inhalers last year to qualify) but my GPs words were "we are certainly not in the business of saying no if you want the flu jab"
They also agreed that it should be offered to all those working with special needs, although many of mine are immune compromised due to their disabilities

RubbingHimSourly · 29/08/2019 16:40

High rates of pip / DLA come in at just under £600 a month. That's potentially £1800 a month just from disability benefits plus disability premiums X3 on tax credits etc. I'm not judging, my son gets pip.........but I'm pretty sure that out of that lot (( and using the DLA will be in the childrens interests as it means their dad won't get ill )) you can scrape together £7.50 to pay for a jab at Asda.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/08/2019 16:44

DH gets a flu jab because he's my carer. He's in the RAF so we don't get Carers Allowance. I have to pay for mine, though.

nopixelsfound · 29/08/2019 16:52

I don't get carers allowance but I got a free one last year as my elderly, disabled mum (with COPD which may be relevant) relies on me.

Normally I've gone to a pharmacy near work and always paid, but last year I went to the one Mum gets her script from, still expecting to pay, and the pharmacist said I absolutely qualified for the free one.

LondonJax · 29/08/2019 16:54

I can never get to grips with this. Our DS has a congenital heart defect so he automatically gets the flu jab regardless of his age. We had the flu jab as an umbrella vaccination when he was a toddler.

Last year, when he was 11 years old, I asked the GP if we should now have our vaccinations done privately, just leaving DS with the NHS.

GP and receptionist's reply...'no because you're his parents and if you both go down with flu who looks after him'. I'm still not sure when we're supposed to get a private vaccination!

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 29/08/2019 16:57

£12 at my local pharmacy. Worth every penny.

99problemsandjust1appt · 29/08/2019 17:35

We are already self funding some things the nhs don’t so money is tight
Yes we will have to do it if they refuse but on principle I think we should both get it on the nhs.
I think it’s a cut off once you earn £100 a week I’m not sure but the you can’t claim carers but I’m not exactly sure

I get mine done at Asda every year, it's less than £10 and normally I can get it done without appointment.

You should both be entitled but in case you aren't at least it's not too expensive. Our whole house gets it as ds2 is asthmatic, I try to reduce the risk as much as possible.

99problemsandjust1appt · 29/08/2019 17:44

Yes will definitely go to Asda then if they refuse

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 29/08/2019 17:49

I didn't mean to suggest that you shouldn't qualify. I was just letting you know how much I paid.

Yubaba · 29/08/2019 17:55

psnc.org.uk/services-commissioning/advanced-services/flu-vaccination-service/flu-vaccination-faqs/

There is some info here about flu jabs, I’m a pharmacist and if you came to my pharmacy I would give you both a flu jab under the NHS service.

MiniMum97 · 30/08/2019 00:44

What you've said about carers allowance is incorrect. If an individual is caring for more than one disabled person who receives a qualifying benefit, they can only claim one lot of carers allowance. If two people are caring for one disabled person only one if them can claim
Carers allowance. There is no household limit.

If three of your children receive the middle it higher rate of the care component of DLA then both you AND your husband could claim carers allowance for two of the children.

You would both need to be providing care for at least 35 hrs pw for the child being claimed for, and earn less then £123pw.

Hope that helps.

99problemsandjust1appt · 30/08/2019 05:04

It’s what was said to us about the household that we can only get it once.
Dh earns more than £123 a week so of 3 dc eligible we can only claim for 1

OP posts:
MrsDimmond · 30/08/2019 05:55

so of 3 dc eligible we can only claim for 1
Carers allowance is allocated to the carer not the person / people being cared for nor the household.

So in your household only you are eligible for the allowance because your dh earns more than is permitted.

In other households more than one person may be elligible to claim the allowance.

The number of dc requiring care is not relevant to allocation or eligibility of carers allowance.

99problemsandjust1appt · 30/08/2019 12:35

It just seems to me it would make more sense to award it to a carer for each qualifying person.
£123 a week isn’t much either they should raise that a bit too I feel so more people could get carers allowance

OP posts:
99problemsandjust1appt · 30/08/2019 12:37

I guess that is a whole other thread though ! Fingers crossed we can get flu vaccinations as carers if not at least I know where to go to get one affordably

OP posts:
foodloves · 30/08/2019 12:48

Caters allowance IS awarded to a Carer for each person.

99problemsandjust1appt · 30/08/2019 12:56

But sometimes it’s just an underlying entitlement ? You don’t actually get the money
For example we have
Dc1 I get carers for her
Dc 2 dh earns over £123 a week so cannot get carers
Dc 3 entitlement for carers allowance but I cannot receive it as get carers for dc1 and dh can’t due to earnings

OP posts:
99problemsandjust1appt · 30/08/2019 12:57

I was told this by carers allowance department we can only claim 1 amount of CA

OP posts:
muddledmidget · 30/08/2019 13:08

I agree with Yubaba, as a pharmacist I would think both of you qualify for a free NHS jab and wouldn't question it. Ive never had a GPs surgery question a jab I've given under the NHS contract when I've sent the paperwork through to them
